Another day, another opportunity to debunk some dog myths!

1. Similar to humans, dogs can learn at essentially any age. You *can* teach an old dog new tricks!

2. Potty training is best done by rewarding good habits and managing the environment so your dog has success going potty in the proper place. Rubbing their nose in it A) doesn’t work to teach your dog what *to* do and B) makes your dog nervous/scared/anxious.

3. Rescue dogs are just as capable and trainable as dogs from breeders and vice versa. I have seen dogs of all walks of life (and have some myself) that have amazing ability, despite their history. Every dog is an individual and their unique experiences, environment, and genetics will impact their personality and behavior.

Next time you’re out on a walk, try to let your dog sniff more and avoid rushing them along. Sniffing is not only natural for dogs, but will also help tire them out more!

Dog Myth Busting Time! 🐾

1. Dominance is not a personality trait and is not something domesticated dogs are focusing on living with their humans! 🐕

2. Unwanted behaviors don’t stem from “spoiling” your dog with love and affection. Use positive reinforcement to teach your dog what you’d prefer but keep the love and spoiling going for all the good behaviors! 💕

3. You can comfort your scared dog! Your pup depends on you for survival, so make them feel safe when they are concerned. ❤️‍🩹

Does your dog struggle to unwind? Teach them to settle!

Be patient and consistent with the training. Short, positive sessions are key. Practicing a few minutes a few times a day is a great place to start.

Don’t forget that training your dog is up to *you*.

A good harness is always a plus and can help keep your dog safe, but it’s up to us to train how to walk with us.

Trainer tip: go out on walks with a treat pouch filled with high value rewards and reward your dog when they are walking well, looking at you, on a loose leash, etc.

Remember, what gets rewarded gets repeated! ✨

Dog myth busting time!

1) You don’t need to dominate your dog or strive to “show them who’s boss.” You literally control everything about your dog’s life - from when they eat to where they go to when they get to use the bathroom. You are never in a power dynamic with your dog - they do not think of us in that way!

2) It is common practice to extend an empty hand out to a dog in order for them to sniff and greet you. The dog can smell you from a distance, they don’t need a hand in their face in order to do so. Although most dogs will tolerate this behavior, some may bite when a strange hand is extended towards them. The best way to greet a dog is to let them come up to you first.

3) “We left him behind when we went out and he chewed my shoe out of spite:” I have heard many variations of this over the years. Dogs are amoral. They do not have a moral compass like humans do. A destructive chewer is usually due to stress, anxiety, boredom, or pent up energy, not because they want to “spite” you.

Hope this helps! Understanding how dogs communicate and how we sometimes put unnecessary expectations on them is key to living a better life with our pups!
