A great day at the ranch helping a local Girl Scout Troop earn their badge!
We started with practical horse care, brushing, tacking, anatomy. And ended the day with a trail ride.
Way to go Girls!

DO YOU HAVE IT???

Here is a poem I first heard Ray Hunt recite at a clinic of his I was fortunate enough to attend. It isn't the one he was most known for reciting, but I fell in love with it just the same. Hope ya'll enjoy it and have a great weekend!
Heart
I talked to a friend just the other day
whoā€™s got lots of opinions an...d plenty to say.
We discussed what we both like to see in a horse
His requirements and mine were different of courseā€¦
He likes a clean throatlatch and a long skinny neck,
and prefers that their hocks are set close to the deck.
Short backs and hard feet and clean slopinā€™ shoulder,
and a gaskin that looks like it swallered a boulder.
He likes a short face and a big olā€™soft eye,
and says these are the horses heā€™s likely to buy.
And when heā€™d completed his lengthy discourse,
on all of the attributes of the quality horse.
He asked my opinion, and where do I start?
And I said that Iā€¦.just want horses with heart.
I said I want heart above all the other.
I donā€™t care if heā€™s Smart Little Lenaā€™s full brother.
Or just how much money that his grandmother won,
or whether heā€™s roan, palomino or dun.
But give me a horse with some grit and some try,
and some heart and some guts and thatā€™s one that Iā€™ll buy.
And Iā€™ve found itā€™s the same with a woman or manā€¦.
the good ones wonā€™t quit you when the s**t hits the fan

When you ask me to train your horse for
30
60
90
Days and I wonderā€¦..would that help the horse.
Or
When you ask me about buying a horse and ā€˜putting it in my backyardā€ never having worked or owning one

I think of what is written below and marvel at how some horses even make it.
By Jane Smiley
Most horses pass from one human to another - some horsemen and women are patient and forgiving, others are rigorous and demanding, others are cruel, others are ignorant.
Horses have to learn how to, at the minimum, walk, trot, canter, gallop, go on trails and maybe jump, to be treated by the vet, all with sense and good manners.
Talented Thoroughbreds must learn how to win races, and if they can't do that, they must learn how to negotiate courses and jump over strange obstacles without touching them, or do complicated dance like movements or control cattle or accommodate severely handicapped children and adults in therapy work.
Many horses learn all of these things in the course of a single lifetime. Besides this, they learn to understand and fit into the successive social systems of other horses they meet along the way.
A horse's life is rather like twenty years in foster care, or in and out of prison, while at the same time changing schools over and over and discovering that not only do the other students already have their own social groups, but that what you learned at the old school hasn't much application at the new one.
We do not require as much of any other species, including humans.
That horses frequently excel, that they exceed the expectations of their owners and trainers in such circumstances, is as much a testament to their intelligence and adaptability as to their relationship skills or their natural generosity or their inborn nature. That they sometimes manifest the same symptoms as abandoned orphans - distress, strange behaviors, anger, fear - is less surprising than that they usually don't.
No one expects a child, or even a dog to develop its intellectual capacities living in a box 23 hours a day and then doing controlled exercises the remaining one.
Mammal minds develop through social interaction and stimulation.
A horse that seems "stupid", "slow", "stubborn", etc. might just have not gotten the chance to learn!
Take care of your horses and treasure them.

Itā€™s hard to live next to some folks but the law allows your ignorance to kill animals because they are yours!

Happy Sunday to you all!
Today we offer a look at the adorable 2015 C**t named Warrior. I mean, just look at that face! Born to Mare Autumn and by Stallion Cocoa, you all might remember that Tiffany and I witnessed his live birth back in June of 2015 right before our very eyes! It was a blessed event for sure and Bill and I continue to be blessed each and every day as he has called our ranch home for the past 6 years. He is highly intelligent, has the sweetest temperament and is the joy to our every day! He fits into our herd beautifully and has grown into the nicest horse imaginable. Hope you enjoy this look at this incredibly special young horse who no longer lives in the National Park, but still has a sense of freedom and love in his life each and every day!
Make it a great day everyone!
Eileen and Warrior =)

Words of wisdom from Tom Dorrence

Here's something a little different to consider. I will put up a few posts which include notes that Tom made in some of the books he owned. This first is from 'The Horse' by DJ Kays. I hope you find them interesting and enlightening. This first is from the chapter on 'Equitation'.
"A horse's usefulness is in proportion to the completeness of his control. The more we know of his mental capacity, the more completely may we accomplish his control.
Our whole system of breaking, schooling and driving is fundamentally deceptive. We aim to give a horse an exalted notion of his powers which are useful to us and at the same time create the idea that certain others which might prove detrimental to our purpose are hardly worthy of the horse's consideration.' This piece was underlined by Tom and at the side he had written : "Cause the right thing to be easy and the wrong thing to be difficult".
