Any horse under the age of 5 should be seen every 6 months until a full complement of permanent teeth are present. If their deciduous teeth don’t shed on their own it can result in abnormal development of the permanent teeth. This can lead to malocclusions, gingivitis, periodontal disease, & pulpitis.
This 3 year old mare had her 708 cap removed. Owner is very persistent on having her checked every 6 months.

This 6 yr old mare was misdiagnosed with strangles & actually had an abscessed tooth (306). Mare presented these signs:
-Foul odor from mouth
-Swelling/bleeding/scabbing on lower jaw (mandible)
-Nasal discharge
-Quidding (dropping partially chewed food)

This is a great example of why you should have your horses teeth checked at least annually or in some cases 2-3 times a year.

Worked on one of ClassicNorth Equine Dentistry, LLC horses! Such a sweet gelding! He has been very sore throughout his whole body, and during his session you could tell he loved it and made him feel better!
