The primordial pouch is made up of excess skin. It helps protects vital organs if the cat gets into a fight. It also helps maximize stretch when the cat runs, climbs, and leaps.

The size of the primordial pouch isn't an indication of your cat being overweight. Some cats have primordial pouches that are larger and more visible than others. If you aren't sure whether your cat is overweight or not, consult your veterinarian.

Litter boxes should outnumber your cats by at least one. Locate a box in each cat’s preferred area. Don’t line litter boxes up in one room. Several weeks ago we were lucky enough to help this rescue momma deliver some of her pups. It is not something we get to do often so it was very exciting and SO rewarding. Our team did a great job helping to deliver the pups and make sure that mom was as comfortable as could be.

Fast forward....mom and pups are all doing wonderful! Becky is a great mom and taking good care of her babies.
Mom and puppies will be available for adoption through No Dog Left Behind - Minnesota Canine Rescue when they are old enough to be spayed and neutered.

Welcome to the WellHaven Family! Dr. Kivi will be working as an Associate Veterinarian at Animal Care Center.

Dr. Cord Kivi was raised in the Kittitas Valley in Central Washington. He was involved in 4-H throughout middle and high school, and helped his dad move hay for clients. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Eastern Washington University before being accepted into the class of 2021 at the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine.

Cord worked as a wildland firefighter for five summers with the Department of Natural Resources on an engine crew to help pay for college. He met his wife in vet school and followed her to western Washington after graduation. They enjoy going out fishing, hunting, camping, and horseback riding and share two and ¼ horses (one is a mini), two dogs, and three cats.

Dr. Kivi is passionate about his career in veterinary medicine and strives to continue to learn as medicine continues to evolve. He works diligently to provide the best possible care for his community and has a special interest in dentistry and soft tissue surgery.

Corn cobs and socks are the top items that cause GI obstructions and require surgery.

🚫🌽A reminder - NO corn on the cob for pets!!! 🚫🌽

Pieces of corn aren’t a concern- but cobs can get stuck in your dog’s intestines. This requires emergency surgery to remove. If your dog is accidentally given a corncob or if they sneak one out of the trash, seek immediate veterinary care!

🥳Wellhaven MG/CR Pet of the Week🥳

Meet Abi and Abu...

Abi has been a patient of Dr. Fish's since not long after he was adopted by Adam and Aya about 3 years ago. He has received all of his wellness care and for any concerns with the CCP wellness plans appropriate to his age. Adam and Aya were aware of how prone little dogs are to periodontal disease, so started his professional dental cleanings at 2 years of age. Recently, Abi decided to adopt a new little brother, and brought Abu in to see us. Although he is only 10 weeks old, he has already started on his wellness plan to continue vaccines and preventative care as he needs.

We at Wellhaven Maple Grove are so delighted with seeing Abu and Abi, they are the sweetest little additions to our Wellhaven family. Dr. Fish looks forward to taking care of them both for many years to come!

There are two videos circulating the Internet that really can be used as educational tools for everyone on canine behavior.

This one is meant to be funny but it’s not. The reason why this dog is “smiling” it’s not because it’s showing his teeth so it makes it easier for the owner to brush, but rather due to conflict behavior. Some behavior called this appeasement behavior. This behavior is at times of conflict to say “ I have a problem with what is happening and I don’t like it.”

This video is very tolerant of teeth getting brushed, and we can’t remove all conflict behavior from our dogs. For example, when I go to leave the house, my dogs do not like that I’m leaving and they display conflict behavior.

That said, it’s important to understand what this behavior is because in dogs that people are unfamiliar with, like working with them in a veterinary hospital, this can lead to injuries if you continue to push the dog who’s clearly telling you they don’t want something done.

At our WellHaven hospital, our team members are Fear Free certified, which means they are knowledgeable in recognizing and handing fearful and aggressive behaviors.

Meet Hazel.....

Hazel was adopted as an 8 week old puppy, originally from a shelter in Kentucky. She was adopted by her wonderful mom Josie, and shortly thereafter became a patient of Dr. Fish's. Little did anyone know how busy she would be in her 9 years in Minnesota. On her journey so far, Josie, Dr. Fish and Hazel have handled hip dysplasia, multiple orthopedic surgeries, a leg amputation to relieve pain, broken toes and teeth, open wounds on her feet, allergies, urinary tract infections and kidney issues. Because Josie is a smart consumer, Hazel has comprehensive pet insurance as well as a Care Companion Plan to help provide for Hazel's many issues and medications. Through the years, Hazel has consulted with specialists at Blue Pearl and that travel to Wellhaven to help her! In fact, she will be meeting our ultrasonographer/internal medicine specialist next week in order to ensure that we are doing all that we can to help her kidneys function well.

The best news of all is that. through all of her issues, Hazel continues to love to come to Wellhaven Maple Grove to see Dr. Fish and her staff. She knows that we all love her dearly and are so proud of how happy and comfortable she is despite all that she has been through. We are so happy that Hazel is part of our Wellhaven family.
