Tri-County Humane Society is a supporter of SF1935/HF1857, a bill that would ban the elective declawing of cats in Minnesota. Declawing can lead to numerous health and behavioral issues for cats, including arthritis, pain, and/or litter box aversion. A cat's scratching may seem like a nuisance, but it's 100 percent natural for them - and there are ways to safely curb the behavior without the procedure.
This legislation is scheduled to get a hearing before the Senate Agriculture Committee on Monday, March 24, in St. Paul. For the month of February, we celebrated and raised awareness for pet dental health. One of the ways we celebrated was by hosting a giveaway! To enter, a pet had to sign up for a dental wellness plan or schedule a dental cleaning.

Our winner for this basket was sweet Shiloh! Shiloh is a 3 year old Bichon Frise/Yorkie mix who came in for their semi-annual exam and dental cleaning. During this visit, Dr. Marx was able to clean and treat his teeth ensuring good dental hygiene for many years to come! Shiloh is now back to enjoying fetch, the outdoors and getting to cuddle with his favorite people. We are so thankful to his mom, Ebony, for taking such great care of Shiloh and being apart of the Wellhaven Family!

Today, we recognize and express gratitude to over 80 years of service dogs in search and rescue, the military, and law enforcement . K-9 Veteran’s day gains recognition from the start of the official U.S. Army K9 Corps. Officially beginning in 1942, trained dogs were recognized as part of the military. Thankful for our K-9 veterans and their families!

Which parasite are you ok with your dog getting?🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱

We hear the excuses everyday as to why people don’t give heartworm and flea/tick preventions:
I live in a gated community, I live in the city, my dog doesn't go outside much, I only give preventatives in the summer, I feel preventatives are toxic, I have never seen a mosquito on my dog, our yard is sprayed, I use essential oils.

Today, we diagnosed a dog with heartworm disease….this is our 8th case this year and it’s only March!!

Please listen when we say heartworm is real as well as tick born diseases but they are sooooo easy to prevent!

Happy 4th of July from your friends at WellHaven Pet Health!

Here are 5 tips for you and your pets on this holiday!

1. Keep pets indoors: The loud noises and bright lights of fireworks can be extremely frightening for pets. Make sure to keep them in a secure and quiet room inside the house.

2. Create a safe space: Set up a cozy and comfortable area for your pet to retreat to if they are feeling overwhelmed by the festivities. This could be a crate or a favorite hiding spot.

3. Drown out the noise: Turning on some soothing music or white noise can help drown out the sound of fireworks and make your pet feel more at ease.

4. Avoid taking pets to fireworks displays: Even if your pet is usually well-behaved, the loud noises and crowded environment of a fireworks display can cause them to panic or potentially get lost in the chaos.

5. Update identification tags: In case your pet does happen to escape during Fourth of July celebrations, make sure their ID tags are up-to-date with current contact information.

Welcome to the WellHaven Family! Dr. Kivi will be working as an Associate Veterinarian at Animal Care Center.

Dr. Cord Kivi was raised in the Kittitas Valley in Central Washington. He was involved in 4-H throughout middle and high school, and helped his dad move hay for clients. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Eastern Washington University before being accepted into the class of 2021 at the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine.

Cord worked as a wildland firefighter for five summers with the Department of Natural Resources on an engine crew to help pay for college. He met his wife in vet school and followed her to western Washington after graduation. They enjoy going out fishing, hunting, camping, and horseback riding and share two and ¼ horses (one is a mini), two dogs, and three cats.

Dr. Kivi is passionate about his career in veterinary medicine and strives to continue to learn as medicine continues to evolve. He works diligently to provide the best possible care for his community and has a special interest in dentistry and soft tissue surgery.
