As we enter into the next few days of bitter cold; keep these things in mind…

As a storm threat of freezing rain and snow marches across the U.S. and Canada ❄️🌨🫧🌬, below are some tips for keeping your horses safe during extreme winter weather events:

1. While lots of hay is ideal for horses to eat to keep warm, now is NOT the time to introduce a round bale if they’ve never had access to one before. It may be more work, but keep throwing them their normal hay source—just more frequently.

2. Similarly, if your horse is not used to being locked up in a stall now is NOT the time. The stress of a major change and the decreased activity can be risk factors for colic. Be sure your animals have access to shelter, hay, and drinkable water but let them move around if they choose to do so.

3. Horses that are thin, older, or fully body clipped are those most at risk in extreme weather.

4. Well fitting blankets are great but be sure horses do not get sweaty under them or that the blankets don’t soak through if snow or rain covered. Wet, cold, and covered is worse that dry, cold, and naked.

5. Some of the highest risk times are when the temperatures hover right around freezing, as that can result in sleet/freezing rain/ice that can make horses wet and therefore colder. Slippery footing is a concern, too.

6. If using electric water heaters, be sure they are functioning and not shocking horses. Take your gloves off and stick your hand in the water (briefly!) to double check.

7. “Trick” your horses into consuming extra water by flavoring a bucket, adding electrolytes to their meals, or soaking their meals in warm water. If you’ve never fed beet pulp before, be sure to add LOTS of warm water. Dry beet pulp is a common source of choke.

8. Tips of ears can be at risk for frostbite. Putting a jumper-style ear bonnet or other ear cover can protect them from wind chills.

Stay safe, friends!

Acupuncture is the stimulation of precise points on the body to help promote the healthy flow of blood and energy. It can be used for any medical condition or simply to better balance an individual. It proves to be quite useful for lameness/performance issues in horses and can often help when western medicine fails to do so. However it is not a "one and done" modality. Usually a patient requires 3-5 treatments to appreciate results and then often needs chronic treatment (monthly, every other month, etc) to maintain those results. Dr. Huffman has had success treating older horses having difficulty standing for the farrier, eye conditions, neck, back, and hip pain, nerve paralysis and muscle atrophy, as well as many other varied conditions.

Do you have a horse 15 years or older? It’s time to start thinking about annual senior blood work. Routine blood work is a part of good preventative care. As our horses age, doing annual blood work allows for us to monitor their internal health status. We are able to do early screening for diseases such as cushings and metabolic disease. By screening for these we can work to prevent illness like laminitis and infection. Screening your animals can actually save you money by catching disease early as compared to waiting until your horse is sick and spending thousands on emergency bills! Metabolic screening for our senior horses usually consists of baseline ACTH (Cushings test), insulin, and thyroid testing. In special cases we may recommend additional screening like a TRH stimulation test. Our senior panel also includes a complete blood count and a chemistry panel. Why is that important? This gives us a baseline for if disease were to occur as well as screens for signs of organ dysfunction and body dysregulation. If disease is caught early generally we are able to better treat and help our patients. This month we are doing a special where you can receive a discount on bloodwork. Book now and save while you can!

Good Information to remember when blanketing our horses on these cold winter days!!

As blanket season is in full force upon us, here is a very important reminder courtesy of the horse doctors at Miamitown Equine Veterinary Services:

"When securing blankets, make sure that the snaps/clips are facing inward, toward the horse! If they are facing out, they can easily become stuck on something, like the hay net in the picture."
