Say hello to Yulia! A 9-year-old domestic short hair diagnosed with a meningioma brain tumor. Yulia went through an MRI and surgery to remove the tumor like a pro —and was even home the very next day!

Kudos to our neurologist, Dr. Chauvet and our amazing team for making her recovery possible!

A heartfelt thank you to the Riess family for entrusting our team with the care of your precious pups!

"Our family feels compelled to share our gratitude to your Surgical staff, Nursing staff and NorthStar team as they continue and remain saviors to our pups; their support, care and dedication is endless and unwavering. Our journey with NorthStar has been longstanding and spans as all 4 of our pets have been under NorthStar's roof more than once. They've been treated by various specialists, surgeons and critical care. Not every visit was a planned or happy one however we are grateful for the care shown.

Our female senior pup Beanie was admitted for emergency surgery after ingesting a toe dressing on her hind leg. We appreciate so very much the quick call to action, followed by detailed updates, constant contact and conversations filled with empathy and professionalism. We continue to praise NorthStar for your expertise and support of our family.

Please continue to do what you're doing as your efforts are seen and appreciated - you and the BEST of the BEST!" -Beanie, Pavi and the Riess clan

Happy Howl-o-ween! 👻 Here’s to a safe and spooky celebration for all—keep pets protected with these simple reminders:

🍫 Keep an eye on those treats—chocolate is for humans only! Keep all sweets and candy with xylitol, out of pets’ reach. Even small amounts can be toxic to them.

🎃 Be Cautious with Costumes: If dressing up your pet, make sure the costume is comfortable, fits well, and allows them to move, breathe, and see easily. Avoid costumes with small or loose parts that could become choking hazards.

🚪 Supervise Pets Around the Door: Halloween night means lots of visitors, which increases the risk of pets slipping outside. Consider keeping them secure or in a separate room to prevent escape.

🦮 Be Visible if Walking at Night: If you take your pet out for an evening walk, use reflective gear or pet-safe LED collars to make them visible to cars.

🕯️ Keep Decorations Out of Reach: Pets may be curious about candles, fake cobwebs, and other Halloween decor. Keep wires and small decorations out of paw's reach to avoid accidents.

…at the Blood Bank! 🧛‍♂️

All jokes aside, we urgently need superheroes to join our team. Our Animal Blood Bank’s inventory is running low, and we need your help to keep it stocked for pets in need.

Just like people, animals experience emergencies, require surgeries, and face serious health conditions that often call for blood transfusions. This is why NorthStar VETS hosts a dedicated Animal Blood Bank, allowing us to have life-saving blood on hand for our patients.

As some of our loyal donors ‘age out’ of the program, we’re reaching out with an URGENT CALL to the community for new members. By volunteering your pet, or sharing this need with others, you become part of a lifeline for critical patients. Countless animals rely on the kindness and courage of donors to survive, and your act of generosity can make all the difference.

To learn more about our donor eligibility criteria and benefits, call us at 609-259-8300 or contact [email protected]

Welcome to the team, Dr. Patel! ✨

Dr. Nikesh (Nick) Patel is a native of New Jersey. He completed his undergraduate studies at Rutgers University and earned his Bachelor of Science degree with a focus in Animal Sciences. He went on to receive his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from North Carolina State University in 2019. Following graduation, he completed a one-year small animal rotating internship in medicine and surgery at the Ohio State University. Dr. Patel migrated to Texas for a year to complete a one-year specialty internship in surgery at the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center prior to returning to the Midwest to complete a three-year surgical residency at the Ohio State University.

Dr. Patel’s focus and interests are in cardiothoracic surgery, surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, arthroscopy), advanced orthopedic surgery, complex upper and lower urinary surgery, and wound management and reconstructive surgery. His previous publications illustrate innovative techniques in non-surgical and minimally-invasive treatments for canine renal cysts, as well as a novel approach in performing pe**le amputations in dogs. His most recent research is in tumor identification and margin evaluation of canine soft tissue sarcomas using spectral-domain and polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography.

Dr. Patel finds it a privilege to have received premier clinical surgical training and mentorship from world-class surgeons, and is passionate about passing that knowledge forward. He developed a strong enthusiasm for leading and teaching students, interns, and junior residents as one of two chief residents in his residency program. As an attending, he strives to help residents foster their clinical acumen with focused development on strategies and techniques for engineering surgical success.

Dr. Patel’s hobbies include staying active through running and hiking, swimming, kayaking, weight-training, high-intensity interval training, and kickboxing. He also enjoys traveling and exploring natural landscapes. In his free time, he likes to support local breweries and distilleries, and other small businesses in the community. He is a committed dad to his Siberian Husky (Kora) and two cats (Willow and Cedar).
