🌟 Specialist Spotlight: Dr. Sarah Friday 🌟

Meet Dr. Friday, one of our incredible veterinary surgeons at NorthStar VETS! With a deep love for animals and a passion for problem-solving, Dr. Friday brings expertise and compassion to every case she handles. 🩺🐾

💡 What inspired you to become a veterinary surgeon and what specific procedures do you specialize in?

"I've always had a deep love for animals. It probably started with my interest in wildlife and nature as a kid, and grew to include our furry family members. That paired with my passion with working with my hands and fixing problems, drew me to veterinary surgery. I specialize in a wide variety of soft tissue, surgical oncology, and orthopedic procedures."

🤝 Why did you choose NorthStar VETS and can you share how you collaborate with other veterinary specialists?
"I was attracted to NorthStar because of the range of specialists, state-of-the-art equipment, and skilled nursing team. It's so valuable (and not commonplace) to be able to collaborate with colleagues who are experts in their field. From being able to provide multifaceted perioperative care for cancer patients with our medical and radiation oncologists to ensuring the best possible recovery after knee surgery with our rehab specialist — it's a full-service hospital."

🔧 Can you share any advancements in surgical technology that have improved outcomes for pets?
"Minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic procedures, prophylactic gastropexies and joint arthroscopy, allow us to minimize patient recovery time."

❤️ Can you share an example of a rewarding case and what do you enjoy most about being a surgeon?
"It's hard to pick just one — technically challenging surgeries bring me a lot of satisfaction to work through, but every case where we are able to achieve a good outcome for the patient and their family is rewarding. Ultimately, we are all here to make the lives of our pets the healthiest and happiest they can be."

⚠️ Important Update: High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) ⚠️

High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) also known as "bird flu" is a highly contagious viral disease of immediate concern. This virus primarily affects a wide range of bird species, but has recently been reported to impact certain mammalian species. According to the CDC, this has also been confirmed in humans.

Due to the resurgence of HPAI cases nationwide, we will no longer be able to triage or perform euthanasia for any wild birds at the hospital, including, raptors, falcons, geese, ducks, etc at this time. We will continue to evaluate privately owned domestic poultry and waterfowl with additional biosecurity measures and protocols.

If you find an injured wild bird, please contact the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife or the local animal control department. Be sure to have the exact location, species, and description of the problem for the department that is contacted.

If your domestic chicken, duck, or goose is having a medical problem, please contact us to discuss your concerns, so we can schedule you appropriately. These precautions are necessary to protect our patients, including other avian and mammalian species, as well as our staff, from potential exposure.

Since parrots, canaries, and finches are unlikely to contract the disease and our traditionally housed indoors, we will continue to see these patients as usual with no additional measures or precautions, at this time.

We will continue to analyze the situation and hope that we can see all species soon. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we prioritize the health and safety of everyone. Thank you for your cooperation during this time.

⚠️Pet Parent Safety Warning⚠️

Protect your pets from the dangers of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1, also known as "bird flu."

🐾 Key Updates:
1️⃣ Avoid Raw Foods: Do NOT feed your pets raw (unpasteurized) milk, dairy products, or raw/undercooked meat. Cats can contract H5N1 from contaminated raw foods, which can lead to severe illness or death.

2️⃣ H5N1 Overview: This bird flu virus is widespread in wild birds and has caused outbreaks in poultry and, recently, dairy cows in the U.S. It is zoonotic (can spread to humans), but human-to-human transmission has not been reported in the U.S.

3️⃣ Recent Cases: A cat in Oregon died from H5N1 after eating raw pet food. A recall was issued for one batch of Northwest Naturals Feline Turkey Recipe frozen raw food. Other cases in cats linked to raw diets have been reported in various states.

4️⃣ No NJ Cases Yet: While no cases of H5N1 in cats have been identified in New Jersey, previous infections in wild birds and poultry have occurred.

5️⃣ Prevention is Key: Always feed your pets safe, properly cooked foods to reduce risk.
