This is my Freya, she's a Miniature Poodle. With all the craziness of moving and everything the last few weeks she was looking rough! I hadn't cut her top knot or her legs since I picked her up at 10/12 weeks old, she's a littler over a year old. She's a turd about keeping her hair tied up so I decided it was time for a style change!! Grooming has always been a huge part of who I am and even though my life is more about home making/homesteading now I love getting to flex my creative muscles!! I'll post an update once I refine some of her new style!

I moved my strawberry plants inside during a really cold stretch. Apparently they think it's time to put on flowers now 😂😂 mind you our house is rarely above 70°F. Little over achievers that they are 😂. I also spied some different herbs sprouting!! I can't wait to set my beds and Greenstalks up!! It's going to be so different growing here, but I'm excited to share the journey. I hit my first issue with containers outside. Unfortunately cats run rampant in mobile home parks, I plan to try some fencing ideas for the containers themselves to protect them!

This next year of homesteading is going to take a curious turn. As of Dec 16th we now live in a mobile home community. I'm taking inspiration from and as they have been doing the damn thing in a small space for a while!!

My focus is turning from a huge garden, chickens, quail, and rabbits on an acre to VERY LIMITED sunny places that I will have to creatively garden in. No livestock (of course now that there's crazy egg prices 🤦‍♀️) of any kind, just our Frenchie and Mini Poodle.

I hope to still share my learning path even though my focus has changed! I can't wait to succeed and fail at container gardening and preserving every little bit I can. Utilizing my canners, learning to cook on cast iron, and really learning to use my dehydrator!! Stick around y'all I promise this next year to really commit to sharing as much as I can and in any way that. I was terrible about it last year. Maybe having to downsize so much will be a blessing for learning to create content to share!

Today I tried my hand at English muffins for the first time, baked two loaves of bread, planted my first container, started some spring seeds, and made pork k carnitas in the instant pot!

How do you homestead without a homestead?????

Yesterday I said goodbye to my coop and flock and I tore down my garden 💔💔

Today we said goodbye to our 1 acre rental house and hello to a trailer in a community. I need ideas on continuing to "turn my waiting room into a classroom". What are some top skills I can master while we wait for a long term home with outdoor space again?

I have already started canning and will continue to do it, I've JUST learned to crochet, and I am focusing more on scratch cooking and meal planning.

I love homesteading and can't wait to be able to buy a home and get back to having a huge garden and all the animals! We haven't been without a yard in so long, it's a strange adjustment for the kids and the dogs mostly, but we'll make do!

Update on my mobile egg layer coop!! My sore back and elbow are definitely slowing me, but I've had some great help too!! My tarp is disgusting thanks to roost teenagers 😒 Hoping they'll switch to inside easier as I add a better roosting set up! We live on an acre and last year this hoop coop was stationary, but I want that space for spring gardening. I am making this as mobile as I can to move around the far back portion of our property that we don't use regularly! I hope the scratching and manure will help feed the trees. I will update again once we're "done", though with my personality I'll be tweaking things for ages 🤣🤣🤣

To Do List

Clean and organize freezer CHECK
Render all the damn lard in the deep freeze PENDING
Inventory all frozen foods and feed the chickens whatever is freezer burned CHECK

Over the next 4 weeks we'll be processing 2 batches of meat chickens, so I need to clear the freezers and then I will need to buy more canning jars for broth that'll be coming from the parted out birds!! Gonna be a good couple months over here before the ice and snow hit.

I bought my first ever gallons of raw cows milk and I am soooooooo excited!!!!
These are meager cream lines, but they're a start! I'm going to attempt just a teeny butter rub so the kids can do it and then to make a farmhouse type simple cheese.

These tiny blooms and fruits make my heart so happy. Growing things makes me feel so at peace, not as much as the ocean, but I'll take the peace I can get in Oklahoma!
These muted green blooms are GORGEOUS and that baby Jalapeno is ADORABLE.
I may not have a massive garden or one that will fill the pantry for the year. I am gaining experience, confidence, and a bit of grace in my failures. I think that matters just as much. I believe firmly that it's worth it's weight in gold to start gaining hands on experience no matter where you are. There are so many growing options for all types of situations. If you don't want to grow your own try to buy from the local growers that have surplus to share. Go to your farmers market and meet gardeners, farmers, and crafts people that live and work in your communities. It's so important to reconnect with skills that have faded from importance in our society.

This tiny quail egg means more to me than a lot of people will understand. I teared up and may have let out a small squeal when I saw it. We started our quail journey back in late summer. Our first batch of eggs came from Alchemist Farm] and we had a lot of loss (I was new to quail and hatching eggs so it was definitely my fault) we desperately wanted to pasture raise, but our pen wasn't secure enough I suppose. The neighbor dogs came through the fence and decimated our flock the same week the hit laying age. My whole house was devastated we love these wonky birds.

The neighbor paid for damages and I used that money to buy another round from Alchemist Farm]
who by the way was selling out of their last hatching eggs AND getting out of quail! I was so panicked, but I ordered, heoped they wouldn't freeze during shipping (these folks know how to pack a shipping box) and set up the incubator once more.

I had a fabulous hatch rate and nice retention on live birds this time, I have quail cages for now, and today with a healthy flock I got my first quail egg!!! I can not wait to see what my babies do and see the beautiful eggs now that the cycle has started for them!!

Getting serious folks!! I'll have a count of what I'll have available to sell tomorrow!! Please let me know if you want to be an egg customer. I have chicken eggs now, quail eggs in a couple months and hopefully by summer I'll have duck eggs to sell as well.

Sourdough starter was so into intimidating to me, my first starter over a year ago failed and died. Loads of people suggested buying a starter but I am STUBBORN so I continued to try and make my own. Blanche (the starter) started slow and I thought I'd killed her after the first week because she was peaking as much after feeding. I pushed through and she flourished beautifully her third week. I continued to feed her and was still way too nervous to make a loaf of bread.

Yesterday I finally decided to try and fail 😂😂 I did not expect to succeed and I don't have a lot of experience with eating sourdough bread. The family likes it and that's all that matters! I plan to make a lot of loaves to try and perfect my bread! Sorry to anyone I try to push loaves off on 😂😂😂

Thanks to for the PDF starter guide and answering questions when I've asked you the MVP!! Thanks to
for being my homestead buddy and always encouraging me and thanks to
and my kids for being guinea pigs every time I need them.

This year's coop/green house. I'm trying to create things that are very easy to remove and store since we're in a rental. This will have a run made from a poultry net. The cattle panels will will be covered for weather protection
The back top will be a small spaced wire to allow for ventilation. I'll add bedding and roosts as well. I'm excited to have the fowl tractors put up for the season and everyone in one spot for easy feeding and watering.

This is our first poultry net and while we have to wait to add an energizer I'm pumped to have such a portable and easy to use fence!

Oh Blanche you beautiful creature 😍😍.

Sourdough starter is fascinating and I've definitely failed a few times so far at creating my own. She's on day 4 and I'm hoping to keep her healthy this time. It was suggested to me that I get starter from someone who has a well established starter, but I'm stubborn and really want to make my own and keep it alive. This is my third attempt in a few years time. My first one shattered on the floor, then my second one a month ago or so I accidently cooked 🤦 so here we are with Blanche 2.0 she's going strong and I can already smell all the fresh goodies I'm get to make with her.

Please share with me your favorite ways to use discard in the comments!

This is an old picture they were almost 13 weeks old. I've had a decent relationship with my neighbor who has sooooo many dogs. I've done my best to work with them when one gets into my yard. Last night 4+ of them came and killed all the quail I had. This is immensely heartbreaking because they were just hitting breeding age and I was so excited to get my first eggs. The farm they came from is also getting out of Quail completely. Thankfully I ordered more hatching eggs and have some in the incubator that I'm treating like glass right now.

This picture may not look too impressive, but it's been over 9 months since I've had my hands in a planter sticking seeds in soil. It's definitely late in the season and I may not grow much, but here we are. Some people just need to grow things and feel the soil on their hands.

The feeling it gave my to feel this potting mix, smell that earthy fragrance, and place those tiny seeds of hope into each pocket. Man I've missed this, I can NOT wait for spring to come. I have big plans for a garden space. The Greenstalk leaf is making my short term dreams come true and I also have two 5 tiers, one I'm planting now and the other I'll add in the spring.

Whether things thrive or not I'll keep you all updated on my experience with the Greenstalk this fall and in the spring. I want to love them 😁

Cooked the first of my processed chickens tonight for dinner!! Everyone loved it and I felt such a sense of pride to know the chicken my family was eating was cared for and treated well until it went to the freezer. This is my goal, I believe in growing the plants and animals you eat. If you can't you should definitely source as responsibly as you can.

I have always wanted to have a small farm. I'm still not sure if I'll have a full farm, but I do what I can when I can. Over the last few years I've grown some produce, leaned how to reserve it, and ate/gifted that bounty. I've also raised and processed rabbits and most recently raise and processed these chickens. I have a strong belief in treating animals the best possible way especially if they're going to end up feeding my family. These guys got moved daily to fresh grass, constantly had fresh water, and got treats. The pens allow me to keep them safe from aerial predators while still allowing them to have fresh ground and sun.

This was an incredibly empowering experience to process these birds and get them put in the freezer. I obviously have to hone my newly acquired skill, but I am thankful for the experience. I have another batch growing out now and will definitely continue to raise meat birds for my family. I look forward to continuing to learn more skills. The next two things to be processed will be ducks and quail over the next few weeks.

Final Quail numbers. I'm sure I had some errors and maybe those of you that have hatched out quail can tell me if this is a decent hatch rate.
25 currently alive (one is VERY iffy)
13 never hatched
5 were clear when candled (no development)
5 have died after hatching
Started with 48 eggs
I'm very excited to have the birds o do have and as long as I have a good male to female mix I'll be hatching eggs out again once they're laying.

Moving them to fresh grass every day sometimes twice a day is my favorite. They are always so stinking happy and friendly to see fresh green! No one told me feeding them was going to be like feeding velociraptors 😂😂😂

They're here!!!! DEFINITELY packs these babies for safety! I also love that there are included ideas to use their compostable packaging around your farm/garden and great instructions for someone who is hatching for the first time as well!! I can not wait to share with you all my journey of hatching out these little birds over the next few weeks!

These guys were already being kept outside before I bought them, so outside they went again. I'm so excited and hoping I have at least one hen (likely means I'll have all drakes) I plan to just enclose the portion where the tub is, but not sure long term what the tractor design will be for our birds. We have hawks and a neighbor with EIGHT dogs so our birds will be tractored to keep them as safe as possible. The tractors will be moved every day maybe even twice a day when possible. I can't wait till the chickens can be out too!! The last picture is our fierce farm guardian watching his charges from the comfort of the sofa. 😂😂😂

I have never in my life built anything, I have assembled furniture etc, but never from nothing to something. I have a great sense of pride and accomplishment in thia ugly duck/chicken tractor I built today. I learned a few things I'd do different next time to change it a bit and it still needs a top added but I love it.

I also learned getting slapped in the face during a hardware cloth recoil and having bad aim with a hammer is no fun at all. This is just the start of my projects and building education 😂😂

The blank slate!
I've never had this much space with this much freedom. We are renters, but the owner is great about all my plans and is just the sweetest lady. I've been watching the sun to see when I want to put garden beds and I've been watching where rain collects so I don't plant in those areas. There's so much shade for housing animal enclosures to keep them cool during these Oklahoma summers too! It's a great combination of the things I want in a property.
Tomorrow is our official move in, it's bittersweet for me too be halting our full time travel, but I'm excited to share these homesteading experiences with my family and with you all. I can't wait to take updated pictures in a few months to see what's changed. Things are about to get very exciting around here.
