Grooming and brushing your dogs are vital in the care of your pet. Another aspect that is just as vital is proper ear car. Without proper ear care, your dog can be at risk for developing infections in the ear canal. These infections can be painful, and possibly lead to other health issues.

There are two types of dog ears: as pictured here, there are ears that lay flat on the head, and ears that stick straight up from the base of the head. All types of ears are at risk of developing infections if not cared for properly, but ears that lay flat against the head are most at risk of infection as they trap dirt, debris and moisture against the head. If the ears lay flat against the head this reduces airflow which hinders the reduction in buildup of harmful bacteria.

Dogs that have large amounts of hair growing from the ear, (typically long haired dogs) are also more prone to develop these types of infections. This is due to the hair trapping in bacteria and dirt in the ear canal. It is important that the ears are cleaned and checked at home in between grooming visits, as well.

Some behaviors that may alert you that your pet's ears need cleaning or medical attention are:

🐾 Frequently shaking head
🐾 Repetitive scratching of the ears
🐾 Redness of the inner ear
🐾 Pus or grime located inside of the ear
🐾 A foul/yeasty odor coming from the ears

*It is important to keep in mind that if your dog's ears are giving off a foul odor, just cleaning them may not help. Odor coming out of your pet's ear is indicative of an infection. If you notice odor or redness, your pet may be in pain and further issues may arise if you do not seek veterinary care in a timely manner!
