Malibu, the last of the OG, passed away on Thursday.

I remember searching for just the right addition to our flock we went to IFA, Cal Ranch and Tractor Supply all in one night. We bought two from iFA and went back to Cal Ranch for the sassy little nugget with the dots on top of her eyes.

I had to remind her often that I searched her out AND went back for her as she was one of the most cantankerous little individuals I’ve ever come to love.

Mali did not like to be held, skittered away when you walked by and refused to roost with the rest of the flock for the first several months depositing her beautiful self on the fence outside only to have me move her every night to the inside.

I was okay with it because it was the only time I got to hold her. I would hold her for several minutes telling her I knew she loved it!

She spent most of her life at the lower end of the totem pole. That is until I brought Lemon to the little backyard farm. That was the day the Mali viewed herself as no longer at the bottom of the pecking order and she promptly jumped up on my lap as if to thank me. 🩷

She lived a beautiful, full life and I am grateful for all that she taught me. 🩷

One of the last of the OG has passed away.

Chicken was the second little peep I chose almost six years ago!

She has been the gentle leader since we lost her best friend Parmy last year. She was the sentinel. Announcing to all when I would enter the back yard or when it was time to get in the coop for bed.

There is a somberness within the flock today. Teriyaki chatted my ear off telling me all about it this morning. I wish I could comfort their hearts and let them know all will be well. 💔

I am so great full for this sweet girl. She helped me learn so much about backyard chicken keeping. She was laying beautiful brown eggs even at this late stage in her life! She had a beautiful life!♥️

We’ve struck gold again!

The stern talking to and presence of store bought eggs worked! Rosemary and Coco have begun to donate to our plight again.

Happy Days!

Now, if spring can come a little quicker we will be back in business!

My sweet Cacciatore left this world today. We have had her for five years and this girl taught me more than I care to know about chicken husbandry. She has been egg bound, had several cases of Bumblefoot that I even operated on her to remove and most recently had water belly. The final disease is one you really can’t cure but instead of taking her life we decided to let Heavenly Father make the decision when it was time. She spent the last year waddling around, sleeping in the laying box, enjoying cuddles and treats and just being herself. When little Joey was hatched she helped Teriyaki protect her and that made me so happy.
