🌪️🐾 Hurricane Preparedness for Your Pets! 🐾🌪️

Hey Pet Parents! 🐶🐱

As hurricane season kicks off, it’s crucial to keep our furry family members safe and sound. Here are some essential tips to ensure your pets are prepared for any storm! 🌀❤️

1. **ID Tags & Microchips**: Make sure your pets have up-to-date ID tags and microchips. It’s their ticket home if they get lost! 🏡✨

2. **Emergency Kit**: Pack a pet emergency kit with food, water, medications, a leash, and comfort items. Don’t forget a recent photo of your pet! 📸🆘

3. **Safe Shelter**: Identify pet-friendly shelters or hotels in advance. Not all emergency shelters allow pets, so plan ahead! 🏨🐕

4. **Calming Aids**: Storms can be scary! Consider having calming sprays, thunder shirts, or their favorite toys to ease anxiety. 🧸🌈

5. **Evacuation Plan**: Practice your evacuation plan with your pets. The more familiar they are, the less stressful it will be! Also, have a plan in place if you’re traveling as well and have left your pets behind 🚗💨

6. **Vaccinations**: Make sure to keep your pets up to date on all vaccinations to keep them healthy while traveling and/or allow them to stay at pet hospitals or boarding facilities if needed at your evacuation destination 💉

REMINDER: IT’S HOT OUT THERE!!!! 🥵🥵🥵

As we get into summer, remember that pets cannot sweat!! Meaning they are very susceptible to overheating (especially squishy faced and thick coated dogs like those in the photos!!). Heat stroke can be fatal!!! 😭😭🫣😨

And humidity is as big of a factor as heat index! Today’s heat index might be in the 80s, but the real feel is in the 100s with humidity factored in.

Take care of your fur babies! Make sure they are not outside without water or cooling options for prolonged periods of time, and make sure to only do early morning and late evening walks with at risk breeds 🐶🐶

CONGRATS TO OUR APRIL PET OF THE MONTH, BELLA ROSSELLINI VACCARO 🏆🥳

Bella was seen by our hospital for a suspected autoimmune disease that caused severe full body vasculitis (blood vessel inflammation), skin inflammation, and fluid retention. Imagine being stung by a thousand bees 🐝 that’s what poor Bella was experiencing 😩😢 But fortunately with intensive hospitalization, fluids, antihistamines, immunosuppressants, lots of chicken treats and the loving support of her mom, Bella came through it just fine!!! And on recheck, she’s better than ever! Way to go, Bella!! 🐶❤️

It’s squished face Wednesday here at Keys Animal Hospital! Everyone meet Loki! 🐶❤️🐾🦴

Loki came to us from the SPCA for a severely elongated soft palate. This condition causes extra tissue to form in the back of the throat resulting in obstruction of the entrance to the windpipe. This can make it very difficult for certain dog breeds like Frenchies to breathe appropriately. In fact, it was so bad that Loki couldn’t even play for long periods of time without getting winded or having breathing issues. 😩 Fortunately, Dr. Maddox was able to do a resection (removal) of part of his soft palate so that his airway would not be as obstructed. And guess what?? Loki is breathing better than ever and is able to play for long periods of time without getting winded!!! Now he’s off to his forever home! Woohoo! Go Loki!!! 🥳🥳

Big shout out to the FKSPCA Marathon crew and Loki’s foster, Kiefer, for giving him such great post-operative care!! 💕

CONGRATS TO OUR MARCH PET OF THE MONTH, GEORGE!!! 🏆🏆

George was seen by our hospital for surgical removal of a tumor located on his elbow. This is a complicated place for surgery because of the large amount of skin movement in an area that’s trying to heal. George has been a trooper through the entire process coming in consistently for his follow up treatments, bandage changes, and multiple courses of antibiotics while his skin healed. He’s officially done with follow ups and his elbow is looking great!! Way to go George!! ❤️👏🥳

CONGRATS TO OUR FEBRUARY PET OF THE MONTH: RANI WHITE!!

Rani was recently diagnosed with Lymphoma, a scary cancer of the lymphatic system that is fatal if left untreated. Fortunately, our hospital is able to provide a novel chemotherapy treatment called Tanovea to patients with this terrible disease. Rani has made it through an entire cycle of treatment and is now currently in remission! Go Rani!!! We are so proud of you and and the progress you’ve made! Enjoy your BarkBox sweet girl ❤️❤️🐶

Congrats to our January Pet of the Month, Panther!!! Panther recently fell into his family pool and almost drowned 😱 He presented on emergency with large amounts of fluid in his lungs and breathing difficulties as a result; however, with the help of some diuretic therapy and lots of TLC from our staff and his family, Panther pulled through like a champ 💪

Panther is off to dog training school in Miami where he’ll no doubt be a top student! We loved helping Panther and we love being there for your pets too.

Happy New Year, everyone!! For all you snowbirds and new clients out there, we just wanted to do a quick reintroduction of our vet team now that we are officially A THREE DOCTOR PRACTICE! Expanding our team allows us offer you more services and appointment availability than ever in order to keep pace with the ever expanding population of the Keys 😃 🏝️ ☀️

Dr. Mike Dunn (top): The man who probably needs no introduction! Our fearless leader and owner of Keys Animal Hospital. Dr. Dunn loves internal medicine, oncology, and conversing with anyone and everyone who wants to talk animals. Holding the title of best vet in Marathon for over a decade now, Dr. Dunn is practically Dr. Dolittle mixed with James Herriot! If you don’t believe us, then make an appointment to see him in action!

Dr. Shavonne Corbet (bottom left): Dr. Corbet has been with KAH since 2019. While she has a strong background in internal medicine and ultrasonographic imaging, she specializes in acupuncture and integrative medicine using a combination of Chinese herbs and Western pharmaceuticals to promote best outcomes in her patients. Acupuncture has a wide range of indications from anxiety to mobility enhancement, and we’ve seen some amazing results from Dr. Corbet’s team here at KAH!

Dr. Kyle Maddox (bottom right): Dr. Maddox joined our team right out of vet school in 2016, but was foolish enough to think he’d love living anywhere else but the Keys 😎 After living in New Orleans and Charleston for a few years, he rejoined the practice in August! If it’s surgery your pet needs, Dr. Maddox is your guy! He has an extensive background in soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, having been the primary veterinary surgeon at several past practices and non-profit spay/neuter clinics. Outside of surgery, Dr. Maddox loves helping the various animal charities in town meet their veterinary needs and will never tire of a good ole fashioned puppy or kitten visit!

🚨ALERT: FOUND DOG!!!! Extremely friendly, young female chihuahua mix found today and brought into our clinic. This little Velcro dog is the absolute SWEETEST, but unfortunately there is no microchip or spay scar we can identity. She’s being kept at our clinic, so if anyone knows this dog or her owners please let them know she’s here. And please share this post if you can. Let’s get this little girl home for Christmas!! 🎄🎅

Abigail was recently taken in by Payton’s Promise Pet Sanctuary after she was sadly surrendered to the shelter following a hit by car! With the help of the remarkable team at Payton’s Promise, we are helping her recover from a pelvic fracture, and, as you can see, Ms. Abigail is getting around great and loving her free BarkBox!
