HandforgedVet's Podiatry Expertise
With the International Hoof-Care Summit coming up this week in Cinncinnati we were feeling a bit hyped about the podiatry side of our practice. What do you think?

Sleip Ai Lameness Comparison
In conjunction with our Equinosis Q gait analysis system we have recently began using the Sleip equine diagnostic application. Sleip utilizes AI motion analysis to indentify lameness, which is then translated into a user friendly graphic reading that shows the location of the lameness as well as which point in the stride it occurs, much like the Equinosis Q.
The top purple line indicates poll displacment and the bottom blue line indicates pelvis displacement. In a sound horse these waves should be symmetric between limbs.
In the first video you can see the left forelimb lameness occuring during impact as shown by the asymmetric purple curve. The second half of the video shows the horse after shoeing, you can see that the curve is much more symmetric and the left forelimb lameness has significantly improved. No nerve blocks or pain mediating medications were administered between video 1 and 2.
HandforgedVet continuously strives to deliver objective dynamic gait analysis and treatment options, and applications like this help us do so.
Podiatry
"Podiatry to me is the combination of good basic horseshoeing and veterinary medicine working in concert."

What happens to a hoof crack when the foot loads and unloads, and why?
Here is an interesting case from the Indiana clinic. This is a 10 yr old Quarter Horse Gelding used for barrel racing, this extensive crack has waxed and wayned over the last two years. The interesting feature of cracks like this is how they behave during hoof loading/unloading. We'd be interested to hear your thoughts on why this happens in the comments.
There is a weight bearing video of this in the comments, as well as some additional diagnosis and treatment images.
