ON THIS LOOK BACK THURSDAY - KEEPING FERAL CATS NOURISHED IN COLD WEATHER:

A simple feeding station for outdoor cats has many benefits, especially during the winter months. It establishes a specific spot where cats know they can find food, which eliminates their need to be out in the weather searching for their next meal.

Outdoor kitties need extra calories and dietary fat during cold weather. Canned food is best, but not if it's likely to freeze. An alternative is a dry kitten formula that is higher in calories than adult kibble. An adult feral cat will eat approximately 5.5 ounces of canned cat food and two ounces of dry food daily in decent weather. When the temperature drops, increase those portions for an extra caloric boost.

Restocking the feeding station at the same time each day will help the cats learn they have a source of daily food and water they can depend on. This should prevent them from exposing themselves to the elements in search of food.

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called "Theobromine".
It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of caution — check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.
Theobromine is the ingredient that is used to make all chocolate — especially dark or baker's chocolate — which is toxic to dogs.
Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

When regulatory takes a bad situation and makes it worse.

I know you don’t like our mom living in your attic or shed. We understand. We only ask that you don’t have her taken away. We need her. There is a way you can ask her to move gently, without any harm coming to her or us.

She chose your place because it is warm, dark and quiet. If you change two of those factors, it should nudge her to leave. Play music and turn on lights in the area where she is staying. It won’t harm her or us, but the message will be clear.

Do this for three days. That will give her time to find a new den. When she has found one, she will move us to our new home.

It won’t cost you any money and it won’t cost us our lives. Everyone wins.

All week I have been seeing these posts…
“There it was…stalking me and my children. These killers are after your pets. Blood thirsty and ready to strike at any moment! Be sure to post on your community pages to warn everyone when you see a coyote…. “😳

You are actually better off warning your community when you see a human walking down the road. Statistically, you are far more likely to be killed by a human or struck by lightning than bitten by a coyote. These are facts.

We are currently in the midst of coyote mating season. They will be a bit more territorial during this time. The main concern being your pets. Large dogs especially are extra threatening to coyotes during this time.

The best thing you can do is keep an eye on your pets and keep them on a leash, when outside. Many places have leash laws anyway, so this likely won’t change your routine.

If you notice a coyote that doesn’t appear afraid, consider “hazing”. This activity involves aggressively chasing it out of the yard, spraying it with a hose, making loud noises by banging pots and pans or anything else you can use. Bring a whistle with you when you go on walks.

Repeated hazing helps teach coyotes they are not welcome in your yard.

Please consider that we share this world with lots of wildlife. Being terrified doesn’t help the situation as much as being knowledgeable does.

Don’t be afraid. Be educated.
