Learning Should Never Hurt!
I began training in a “big box store” in 2008, and I was amazed at how many people were interested in shock collars, prong collars, and choke collars. The most common complaint about their dog was “s/he doesn’t listen to me.” My response was “do they know English?” Dogs don’t read minds.... they don’t speak English, but they do understand the sounds of language. With basic concepts of dog behavior, simple training techniques, and understanding how our dogs respond to “our world”, most dogs are more than willing to “listen” if we can communicate at the same level. We don’t have to fight against each other.... we should work together as a team. As a positive reinforcement trainer, I take pride in helping families and dogs understand each other’s needs.
My rescue white German shepherd Kadin showed me the power of positive training back in 2011 - as the strong willed “White Beast”, he was in a German shepherd rescue and “refusing” to respond to commands given by his foster parent. He fought the human world on just the simplest tasks even though he clearly had training by his previous owner. Want to know how we connected?
