As beautiful inside as outside, Desi is a 6 month old rescue mutt who is kid-, cat- and dog-approved. She’s thriving in foster and learning all the skills to be an easy and happy companion. 2025 is her year to be adopted and we’re hoping sooner rather than later!

Cashmere needs some help!! This husky buddy came into the Presidio Shelter pretty sick and has been at the vet for two weeks. He’s 3 years old and his weigh-in clocked barely 40 lbs, he’s very thin. He’s got the all clear for discharge but he still needs meds and it’s beyond the shelter/staff to give them. Plus shelters are stressful and depressing - no place for recovery! This bud is affectionate with people and did well with other dogs during his assessment. He knows how to sit, takes treats nicely and sick or not, has that classic husky independent streak. 😂 We gotta find a place for this buddy to go- and soon! All supplies provided, as always, and we need a couple week commitment, unless we can do even better and find him a foster to adopt home!! Please reach out if you can help!

It’s NYE and we can’t tell if Dee Dee is smiling or is she grimacing? 😳 But we do know this (read on, it’s important): how hopeful you can feel is directly related to how much you participate in making change for the better. Want more hope? Come make some with us! You will be shocked by how much good you can do, immediately, in the service of the cutest pets, and to make our community a gentler, kinder place. We hope to see you volunteering, fostering, or adopting in 2025! Happy New Year! 🥳💩❤️

Yup, Postal, you are the best thing. ❤️ Postal was found wandering in the Post Office parking lot (don’t read anything negative into her name!) and is 1 year old, 12 lb girlie looking for a cuddle buddy for life. She wants a human cuddler for sure but will also be happy to cuddle with other dogs and cats!

We are going to try to squeeze one more dog intake into 2024 and if there was ever a buddy as deserving, we can’t imagine it. King Red is 13 years old. His owner can no longer take care of him (for real) and couldn’t find anyone to help him take care of King, so he brought him to the Shelter to be euthanized. As always - and to the thrill of his guardian - we said, “Let’s try to do better!” King has always lived happily with other dogs, walks well on leash, and is said to have impeccable house manners. He was neutered in 2011 and has been a loved pet since.

Seniors in the Shelter hurt our heart just on the merits but things are especially desperate for King as the shelter is already full and a slew of new dogs are scheduled to come in just after the New Year.

King can be delivered anywhere in West Texas and comes with all supplies and any medical needs covered, of course. We’ve got two days to make a plan!! Please reach out if you can intercede to put King on the path to home.

It’s Friday and we feelin’ good!!! Dixie (formerly Misty, from the Van Horn Animal Shelter) has now been home for more than a month, but truth be told, she fit in perfectly from the very first day.

We’re so thrilled by her local adoption (Alpine!), we love her humans and new dog siblings, and it’s especially sweet because the Van Horn Shelter is a real risky place to be an unwanted or homeless pup. We feel lucky to be working there and to cross Dixie’s path! This is the land of few people and many dogs but we also know that we are getting better at finding local homes for the pups in need in our communities. Maybe you’ve seen us out an event? Or had someone share one of our social media posts? Or, from nearly anywhere in West Texas, even had one of our “Wanted” posters catch your eye? Keep your eyes peeled, we know our dogs gotta be seen to be saved!

We are celebrating 33 unique, wonderful, happy adoptions in 2024, and have four more dogs adoption pending just after the New Year. That doesn’t sound like many but it is triple the number of adoptions we had last year and exceeds our 2024 goal. Next year should be even more impactful, especially considering the amazing dogs we have in foster night now...

But that’s getting ahead of ourselves: right now we are sending a huge batch of congratitude to Dixie and her family. May the adventures go on forever and the snuggles never end! 🎉❤️

Merry Christmas from the adoptable puppy Zula! She’s having the time of her life trying to chew the ball off her Santa cap in her foster home (a million times better than sitting bored and cold and lonely at the Presidio Animal Shelter) and she hopes everyone is having a great day. She is grateful and so are we! A big and heartfelt “Merry, merry!” from the pets and people of OTAT- West Texas!

As we head into the holiday, we are so incredibly proud that our West Texas foster community is supporting a record 47 dogs in foster homes!! Fosters are our most precious resource and holiday fosters are as good as they come. Even as we celebrate all these dogs who will be warm and unstressed and well fed for the holiday, our heart hurts for those in our area shelters.

We spent the day today in Presidio, and met some very fine dogs waiting for their turn. When life makes space for a foster, we hope you’ll reach out. We work as hard for the people in our rescue community as we do for the dogs and we’d love to have you join us and expand what’s possible.

With full hearts, we thank everyone willing to open their home to a shelter- it will change their lives, and maybe yours! (Of course, the same goes for adopting!)

Our parade of incredible adoptable doggos continues with Buck, a one year old, 45 pound stunner who loves people and other dogs. Like all OTAT dogs, he’s living in a foster home (with two dog pals) where he is showing us his best and most natural self, while fine tuning proper house manners and great companion pet routines. Buck can’t wait to get home and be a loved and loving kid. Reach out for the deets- too many good things to list in a social media post!

Looking for the sensibility of a heeler and the portability of a chihuahua? Look no further than Socket. She is 15 lbs of smart, sassy, athletic, affectionate, young adult perfection. She’s dog and cat friendly, and full of personality! Super special!

Foxfire’s journey is a testament to the lifesaving work we do—work that wouldn’t be possible without our fosters, vets, and partners.

When Foxfire came to us in October, she’d just given birth (no puppies came with her), and she was battling mastitis, heartworms, and malnourishment. Scared and struggling, she had a long road ahead. But thanks to her incredible foster family, who stepped in to provide soft beds, nourishing food, and a calm environment, Foxfire has been given the care and love she needed to heal.

This week, she reached a huge milestone: her heartworm injections are complete, and her 30 days of rest and recovery are underway. It’s moments like this that remind us what rescue is all about—giving dogs like Foxfire a new beginning.

With Christmas around the corner, Foxfire will even get her own stocking to celebrate how far she’s come. And soon, she’ll be ready for her forever home. If you’re looking for a loyal, loving companion, Foxfire might just be the one for you. Visit otatwtx.org/dogs/foxfire to learn more and apply to adopt her today!

Thank you to everyone who makes this work possible—fosters, donors, vets, and advocates. Together, we’re changing lives, one dog at a time.

Alright everyone, make an ORDERLY QUEUE to line up for this girl!! Salty is one of those elusive retriever mixes that ends up in rescue. She is 7 years old and 43 lbs, and this girl has it all: dog friendly, kid friendly, cat friendly, house trained, leash trained, kennel trained, a medical survivor with a super compelling backstory too.

The cherry on top? Salty is a 15/10 dog, which means all her medical care (past and future if needed) and a bunch of other benefits/community is provided by the . 🙏❤️🎉

Want to know more? Salty wants to go home! Reach out, and remember, don’t be salty yourself: no jostling, no shouting, no cutting in line! Just give us a DM or find our adoption survey on our website!

Meet Sahara, this week’s sweetheart. Friendly, cuddly, and house-trained, Sahara is as good as they come. She’s thriving in her foster home, where she’s mastered the art of zoomies in the yard and couch cuddles inside. Sahara is great with other dogs and always happy to make a new friend.

If you’re looking to add a little golden desert sunshine to your life, Sahara is ready to ride off into the sunset with you.

Fill out an adoption survey at otatwtx.org/how-to-adopt to bring her home.
