Anyone riding the post-launch party inspo-wave and down for a few weeks of puppy breath and sleepy cuddles (in between short-lived spurts of mayhem)? Puppies are fun! They’re good for the soul! These pups would really love to get out of the shelter (it’s outdoors!!) and into a home for a couple weeks. Holler if you can help!

We launched! It was an experience we will always remember! Our launch party had over 200 folks in attendance, glorious weather, so many perfectly-mannered dogs, the amazing Alliance band, so much food and drink (all discounted or donated by generous local businesses), trivia, cocktails, awards, merch, dog stories, laughter, a few years, and the best thing: community.

When we started we couldn’t even imagine where this modest little hobby project at the end of a dirt road in Terlingua might lead… and though we’re dreaming bigger dreams these days we know the great dogs and great people of West Texas will again redefine what is possible for animal welfare in our region.

As we try to do more, we need you more! We are so excited to get back to work for everything that comes next, and remember: when you adopt, foster, drive, volunteer, donate or cheerlead, this becomes your rescue too! Come be part of this!

Isn’t it great when you have enough feelgood news you can’t wait til Friday? Cashmere is in foster and our skinny, finicky eater is finally eating!! So grateful for the community of nurturers that make this rescue possible!

Once-worried Luna has blossomed in foster and is an affectionate, happy girl now! She is also house- and kennel-trained, great with other dogs, respectful of cats, a gentle treat-taker and stunningly beautiful. She will not leave your side and her nubby tail wags non-stop. This 50 lbs Aussie x heeler gal is ready to find her forever home!

We dream big, but this is a sight we never dreamed we’d see, even in our biggest dreams!!

This morning and The Bug Dog was at the Alpine airport providing some mid-winter lifesaving primarily for dogs who are restricted by either breed (pit bulls, boxers, bulldogs) or size (we had two 80 lbs dogs) from traveling on commercial flights and therefore at highest risk. Under cold skies and glittering stars, we loaded 28 dogs from the Alpine, Marfa, McCamey, Pecos and Van Horn Shelters, as well as three West Texas communities who have no shelter for stray/homeless dogs. Kudos to our fosters, volunteers, team members and Alpine ACO Jennifer and ACO Kristi for getting this job done- and all the prior work caring, advocating, vetting and driving!

So thrilled to welcome Pilot Frank to West Texas- a volunteer pilot who gave two long and arduous days to this project, these 28!dogs and this team. 🥹

Finally, such gratitude and respect for our sister for accepting 27 large breed dogs to make this epic opportunity come to fruition! When it couldn’t get better made a last minute flex to accept just one more- Patsy, a 75 lb good girl pit bull who got her health certificate signed with only moments to spare and a crate procured the morning-of!! (Thanks for all the crate donations y’all, we did it!!)

It all made for a busy, wonderful, slightly chaotic, and never-ever-going-to-forget-it experience for all of us. We are humbled by the generosity of everyone who loves our dogs from afar and made their rescue possible today. You are the best.

We’ve been loving this dog in foster for 100 days now and we know a wonderful home for her is just around the corner! Foxfire is 27 lbs of dog-loving, cat-respecting, stick-around fun. Please consider adopting her or share her availability to special folks looking for a special girl!!

Where are our small breed fosters at? We’re looking for a foster for this little guy! Emmett is a shy guy who is a bit bewildered to find himself surrendered to the outdoor Van Horn Animal Shelter (brrrr). We’d love to help him, so if you’ve got a resident dog, a warm home, and love and patience to spare, he’d be even more grateful that we will be! We expect Emmett is 6 months old and about 15 lbs. Be in touch!

We need a little help!! We have an incredible transport opportunity coming up in just a few days and the hard work is all but done EXCEPT that we don’t have enough travel crates for the dogs accepted to fly!!

If you have a plastic crate whose length measures 28”, 32”, 36” or 40” we would love to accept it as a donation. The crates must be clean and secure but it is OK if there is a small crack or missing bolts. Snap together crates *may* be ok. (We don’t have any cats on board but we can accept cat carriers if you’ve got em! We cannot use wire crates for this transport, sorry!)

If you want to buy us a new plastic crate, we’d love that! And if you don’t have a crate to donate and don’t want to buy a one (they’re expensive, we absolutely know!!), you can donate to OTAT-West Texas and that will offset the costs!

Since we’re all far flung out here, just let us know where you are in a comment and we can advise where to drop the crate. This transport will rescue at-risk dogs from the Alpine, Marfa, McCamey, Pecos and Van Horn Animal Shelters as well as several shelterless communities! We thank you!

Imagine being a dog in a shelter whose live outcome rate is less than 50%. Imagine being the Animal Control Officer with dual duties of collecting/caring for pets and having to make life or death decisions when there’s no space, few adopters, and no foster program.

These thoughts are in our mind today as Ace left the McCamey Shelter with one of our volunteers and headed for rescue through . Like most of the dogs in our small town shelters, Ace comes with a rich and detailed backstory. He’s waited more than 4 months to be rescued- his kennel space protected as we’ve already helped more than a dozen other dogs find transports or foster homes.

In the year ahead we’re focused on transforming the McCamey Shelter into a place of hope- for the pets in their shelter, the staff who work there, and the community at large.

Our OTAT West Texas members support this transformation by giving monthly to let us expand to McCamey. For as little as $5/month you can also be a partner in this high impact work. Join us at www.otatwtx.org/membership
