Dr. Lefeld had a first today! This dog was presented upon emergency to our Versailles office for having a bone stuck around her bottom jaw! After taking a look, Dr. Lefeld decided it would be best to have the bone cut off to remove it. The patient went home bone free and pain free!

Please be cautious when giving pets a bone to chew. This patient was being monitored at home with the bone and still ended up coming to see us, with a bone to pick! 🦴

Many of our local farmers have been asking about the new dairy cow virus that’s been appearing in Texas, Kansas and New Mexico. This is what we know thus far…

The virus has evolved from the highly contagious bird flu. Only dairy cattle have been affected so far and it begins as a severe drop in milk production in mid lactation cows. The milk presents as very thick, much like colostrum. Cows will go off feed.

There is minimal danger to humans; milk that is pasteurized and meat that is cooked is safe to eat. Cattle herds are NOT being euthanized, only quarantined. In the affected herds there has been less than 10% of the cows affected with little to no mortality reported. Most affected cattle recover in 2-3 weeks with supportive care.

Dr. Hardesty is staying in close contact with state and federal officials and will keep you all up to date with any new information.
