🐾 Cystotomy: A Life-Saving Procedure for Our Furry Friends 🐾

Last week we had a sweet little pup come to us because he was straining to urinate. It was discovered that he had bladder stones as the cause of his symptoms and his owners elected to pursue surgical treatment (a cystotomy).

A cystotomy is a surgical procedure where a small incision is made into the bladder to remove stones, tumors, or other foreign objects that may be causing discomfort or health complications. This surgery is often necessary when pets have urinary issues that cannot be resolved with medication or diet change alone.

We successfully removed all of the stones from this pups bladder (and the one stuck in his urethra) so he can urinate normally now with no concern of re-obstructing. Now we wait for the test results of the removed stones to guide us forward with long term treatment and care.

If your pet has any concerning behavior, is straining to urinate, has blood in their urine, etc please schedule an appointment so we can figure out what's going on and formulate a treatment plan for them.

Feel free to leave any questions about this surgery or anything at all in the comments below!

🎉 Happy New Year from Etowah Veterinary Hospital! 🐾

Thank you for trusting us with your pet’s care this year—we’re so grateful to be part of your family’s journey. ❤️

While it’s a time for celebration, don’t forget to keep your furry friends safe and stress-free. Here are some tips:

🎆 Keep Pets Indoors: Fireworks can be loud and scary. Create a quiet, safe space for your pets to relax.

🍾 Watch the Party Snacks: Many festive foods, like chocolate, grapes, and alcohol, are dangerous for pets. Stick to their regular diet.

🔒 Secure Doors and Gates: Loud noises can cause pets to panic and escape. Double-check that doors, windows, and gates are secure.

📛 Update ID Tags: In case your pet gets spooked and runs off, make sure their ID tags and microchip information are up to date.

🎉 Skip Confetti and Noisemakers: Small decorations and loud noisemakers can be choking hazards or cause extra stress.

🐕 Keep an Eye on Fireworks: If you’re lighting fireworks, keep pets far away to avoid injuries or burns.

💊 Anxiety Medications: If your pet gets scared or extra nervous during these holidays with fireworks please let us know and we can prescribe medication to help keep them calm.

With a little preparation, you and your pets can safely enjoy ringing in the new year. Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and paw-sitive 2025!

🚨 What’s Hiding in Your Pet’s P*e? 🚨

Did you know that your pet’s urine can tell us a lot about their health? 🐾

In this photo we are looking at some struvite crystals one of our feline friends had earlier this week. She also had a urinary tract infection with bacteria and both red and white blood cells at abnormally high levels. We were able to start her on antibiotics and she's already feeling much better!

Urine analysis helps our team detect:
🔬 Crystals – Early warning for painful bladder stones or abnormal bladder environment
🦠 Bacteria – Signs of urinary tract infections
💧 Blood cells – Indicators of inflammation or kidney issues
⚖️ Protein levels – Clues about overall kidney function

This quick and painless test can uncover hidden problems before they cause discomfort. Regular check-ups, including urine analysis, are key to keeping your furry friend happy and healthy. ❤️

If your pet has been drinking more water, urinating more often, or showing signs of discomfort, we recommend bringing them in for checkup.

Let’s keep their tails wagging and whiskers purring! 🐕🐈✨
