FUN FACT!

The green circle is highlighting a tooth root abscess in a patient of ours who recently had a dental procedure performed. An abscessed tooth usually has a dark halo visible around the tooth roots on an X-ray (which can be seen in the photo below).

The treatment for this is extraction of the associated unhealthy tooth/teeth. Luckily this patient hadn't had any clinical symptoms of this abscess yet such as pain or facial swelling and it was good timing she came in for the dental when she did so we could prevent those things from happening.

Taking dental x-rays is critical when doing a comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment (COHAT) to make sure all unhealthy teeth are addressed appropriately. If you only look above the gum line there may be things that are missed!

We hope everyone is enjoying the last days of Fall because Winter will be here before we know it! If you have any photos of fun Fall activities your pets did this year we'd love to see them! Rise says the leaves match his coat and he thinks they're also great toys to play with!

FUN FACT!
Cystocentesis: a procedure that involves inserting a needle through an animal's abdominal wall to collect urine from the bladder directly.

When we obtain urine via cystocentesis in hospital we use our ultrasound to guide collection and ensure a safe procedure. Pets usually handle this very well and it only takes a couple of minutes!

The importance of obtaining urine this way is that we are guaranteed a sterile sample without any possible contamination from the urinary tract or outside world.

Below is an image of a bladder (the black oval) as an example of what we see when we do this. If you're ever curious and want to see what your pets bladder looks like during a cystocentesis let us know!
