In recent days, I've seen several news reports on animal cruelty and abuse cases that were horrifying. Throughout my career as a Licensed Veterinary Technician, I've seen lots of cases in the clinic and in homes. Unfortunately, there are so many more that we aren't even aware of. In the U.S. alone, it is estimated that approximately one animal is abused every 60 seconds. Close to 10 million die from animal abuse, annually.

According to the ASPCA, animal cruelty consists of causing animals to live in situations that produce suffering or abuse. Examples of such includes:
- Inadequate food and water
- Tight restraints or confinement
- Lack of shelter from harsh weather
- Physical and emotional abuse or neglect
- Unsanitary/ unhealthy living conditions
- Abandonment

Some signs of animal cruelty are:
- Unexplained and untreated Injuries, wounds or conditions
- Lack of food, water, or shelter
- Unusually fearful, subdued or aggressive towards humans
- Notable malnourishment, poor body condition
- Visible signs of neglect (unhealthy eyes/ears, matted fur, covered eyes, overgrown nails, pest infestations, collar embedded in skin)
- Unduly constrained, isolated / confined in unsuitable conditions

If you suspect an animal cruelty, document the specifics and obtain proof. Report it to police, the ASPCA, local Animal Control Agency and/or the Humane Society. They can determine if your claim falls under animal cruelty laws in your state and take action. Animal cruelty is punishable by law and the penalties depend on the state in which the crime was committed, the severity and whether it is a first or mutliple offense. Those convicted will receive fines and/or jail time.

Educating others and setting an example of how to respect and treat animals in our communities and our households is extremely important. Together, we can advocate for animals and prevent any further abuse. Please share this information with family and friends.
