Good Catch Dog Rescue

Good Catch Dog Rescue We are a small rescue who helps to combat the local stray dog population in South Texas. We're small but we're mighty.

Good Catch Dog Rescue came to fruition after years of living in South Texas and not seeing an end to the overpopulation of unwanted companions. Every dog we've rescued has left us with reason to go back for more and each of them has been deemed a good catch!

Congratulations to Tigger!!! He’s been adopted by our friends, Tim and Natalie and has settled into his new life alongside his sister Libby.
Tigger was dumped 3 weeks ago and picked up by a good human (Amy) who knew he didn’t belong on the side of a busy road. She made a post and we responded. He came home to Good Catch and we soon learned of his condition.
Tigger was diagnosed with Diabetes Insipidus and although he still wears diapers while his momma figures out his desmopressin dosages, he is soooooo much better than when he first arrived and a whole lot happier too.
Tigger has won the lottery and we are so, so happy to have been part of his journey to his pot of gold!!!

Thank you Max and Neo for the rescue care package!!!
A couple of times a year we’ll receive a donation from them which always seems to be timed perfectly with our ever depleting inventory. This is one of the few organizations that gives freely to rescues.
When you buy from Max and Neo, know that your money goes farther than the pockets of their stockholders.
We appreciate this business more than they may ever know.

Record heat here in Texas so the Hamiltons have moved from their air conditioned room in the barn to our air conditioned office in the house! We like to keep new mommas separate from our other dogs so they can just focus on loving and feeding their babies with no distractions, but this week is exceptionally warm so in they come!

Before puppies lose their baby fangs, they’ll lose their incisors at the ages between 3 1/2-4 months. This is a good window for estimating a pup’s age. Once all of their adult teeth are in by 6 months, it gets trickier. Anthony was born 5/5. He’s right at 3 1/2 months old and on time for his new teefers!

Our little Millam has been favoring his back left foot lately and today we noticed it was swollen. Off to the vet to have him checked out by our good doctors!
They took an x-ray and found that he has a broken toe! We’re not sure when or how this happened, but this is a first for us (and him). There’s nothing we can do but give him pain meds and “hope” that he heals without any further complications.
Just another day in the life of rescue!

We’d like you to meet the “Hamiltons”! We consulted with 8 very special humans to come up with 8 very different names for these precious pups. They are all doing well and momma Sheila is a rockstar! She is instinctive and gentle and healthy. We could not be prouder of this good girl and her family of catches.
If you’d like to donate to their care and our rescue, please see our options below.❤️

Momma Sheila update! I checked on her multiple times through the night and she was very content but definitely ready for this to be over. She started delivering this morning at 7am.
So far there are 4 healthy pups, all boys. She’s taking a break and will be back at it when she’s ready.
Can you imagine this happening in a pound?🥺
Stay tuned. There’s more to come!

Together, with the volunteers at Circle of Love Animal Sanctuary, we rescued a pregnant momma who has spent the last 2 weeks in a very small and hidden pound in Hamilton, TX.
Our good friend Traci Bell posted their plea for help and seeing how close this beauty, (now named Sheila), is to giving birth, we made room!
Ellen and Trish drove over 3 hours from Hamilton to Marion this morning to get Sheila to our Good Catch farm. Ellen kept her overnight and gave her a much needed bath to relieve her of the fleas that she was infested with.
Hamilton shelter is now on our radar as they’re another facility who has very little support. If it wasn’t for the amazing volunteers and networkers, we’re certain Sheila would have given birth alone in a place that has no creature comforts for a new momma and her wee ones.
The clock is ticking!
Any guesses on how many pups she’ll have?

Nayla turns 12 in September! Hard to believe that a dog could even live to this age after being tied up outdoors her entire life. To keep her spry, we get her a Librela injection once a month. The cost is $87.
We are still looking for a home for this old gal. She may be dog selective, but she sure does love Cooper and she believes that the puppies are hers. She has never met a stranger and she’s all smiles if you make the time to talk to her. She sleeps in our kitchen that connects to the laundry room and she has her own foster yard. She cries every morning when she sees me feeding the other dogs. She wants so badly to be with me at all times, but she just won’t leave a few of them alone. I don’t fault her for that behavior. That’s what happens when you don’t socialize your dogs. If it wasn’t for Joanne and Kathy, she wouldn’t even be people friendly. Thankfully, she is!
A home for her and Cooper would be a dream. They are so sweet together, I can’t explain it . The day that he gets adopted and she doesn’t, will be a sad one here at good catch.

Off they go! The start of a trip but the end of a journey. All four of these dogs know love because of the people who rescued them. Romeo, Rocco and Sylvester are all with Good Catch and Bernadette is a FREEDOM STREET foster. Rescues that work together make for a strong network.
Thanks once again to Freedom Run Express for getting these puppies into the arms of their families this weekend.

Friday is usually our listing day on Petfinder, but we’re still waiting on them to fix the problem with listing a pet. It’s been a week since our dogs have had any opportunity to find homes. 4 puppies are growing up in foster homes because Petfinder more than likely hired their new IT department from India when Purina took over.
Imagine going to work everyday and your boss telling you that your paycheck is lost. That’s what this feels like. I’ve never seen anything like it.

08/14/2024

We rely 95% on Petfinder to find our adopters. They are a free service to rescues and because of this free service, they often have a LOT of technical difficulties due to the number of clients they serve. I watch our Petfinder very closely. I watch the views, I watch the inquiry numbers because they don't always make it to our inbox, and I adjust our dogs' posts accordingly. Sometimes all it takes is a better photo while other times we need to revamp a dog's listing. It's a full-time job and if you're lazy about it, your dogs won't get adopted.
Recently we've seen a slowdown in not just adoptions, but inquiries and on Friday after posting our 3 latest dogs (Hoagie, Macy and Ranger), I saw zero views throughout the weekend. This is never the case. We'll see views and no inquiries or views and inquiries and no applications, but zero views across 10 states per dog is a problem on Petfinder's end.
The difficulty in this handicap is the lack of support from one of our most important services. Petfinder doesn't have a customer service department, there's no toll-free number and honestly, I believe that most of their technical support inquiries are answered with AI.
Our dogs suffer the consequences. We have puppies literally growing up in foster care because no one is seeing them. We have dogs bonding to their temporary families because they're not being shown. A week lost on Petfinder is another 14 meals per dog. It's a stray on the streets still waiting for an opening to be safe and vetted and it's another 7 days of waiting and hoping that something out of our control, will get fixed.
So tonight, I come to Facebook to ask that you share our website where not only can someone find the same dogs listed on Petfinder, but more photos and videos of them as well. Our application link is easy to access and our "about us" is there to introduce ourselves.
We don't know how long this problem will last. Currently there's no way for us to list new dogs on Petfinder and those that are listed are not garnishing views. In the meantime, we must think outside of the box to get around yet another hurdle that makes it so difficult for us to just keep doing what we do best; save good catches and find great matches.

Sometimes when we least expect it, the most amazing things will happen.
Tigger, our little diabetes insipidus, brindle boy has been adopted by our good friends the Tabberts.
Natalie saw his story and fell in love with his face and this morning, at his meet and greet with them and their dog, Libby, he found himself a forever family!
Tigger was abandoned in Selma, TX in an area known to be a dumping ground for unwanted dogs. If it hadn’t been for Amy, his guardian angel who saw him from the road and ventured into the high grass (in sandals) to save him, he most likely would never have made it out. A d.i. dog without water is as lethal as it gets.
Only one week into being rescued, this handsome pup has proven to be not only a lover of his people, but also of every dog he meets. He has responded well to his medication and is ready to begin his next chapter in life with a family that won’t give up on him.
Tigger goes home tomorrow and begins his role as a loved companion and we can’t wait for the updates that follow!

Ranger is (and has been) ready for his person/people. We'll be looking for an experienced adopter who understands that a rescued dog has history that must never be repeated. Being strict but kind and following the advice we offer for the initial 3 months of their care until they start to understand that they're safe. A human who won't flaunt their dog knowledge but then give up at the first sign of imperfection. Someone who doesn't "yes" us at every question but rather puts the effort into answering honestly and with humility. We don't think that that is too much to ask of someone looking for their best friend.
Ranger came back to Good Catch from his last home needing more decompression than he did when he arrived the first time off the streets. This broke our hearts and we're certain it fractured his.
We will not repeat this mistake again for our smiling, long eared friend.

At just over 2 years old, Ranger came to Good Catch after being found as a stray with injuries to his neck that resembled an embedded cable. He was in poor physical shape but high spirits when he entered our care.Fast at making friends, Ranger found his place among sometimes 10 other foster dogs and...

Well, well well! Look who is also ready for Foreverville!
Meet Macy! From abandoned to rescued, this girl and her brother, Millam are about as sweet as they come and now, she's available for adoption.

Our Macy girl might have been discarded like someone’s bag of trash, but we know that she is an absolute treasure! She and her brother, Millam, were abandoned in a rural area known for being an unwanted, animal dumping ground. The pups were forced to fend for themselves in order to find food, wate...

A mere 2 months after being adopted from a local shelter, he was heartbreakingly abandoned in a neighboring city, running until his tiny paws were torn and burned by the hot asphalt. Tigger Update!
Diabetes Insipidus was his diagnosis. Desmopressin is his treatment.
Two of these little pills daily is all Tigger needs to function like a normal dog. A cost of only .50 cents per day.
We've now invested over $300 in our new brindle boy who only arrived Friday and we still haven't even had him neutered yet or gotten him his proheart12 shot.

Our adoption fees are $350.
Is he worth it?
Absolutely.

Tigger's at our vet today for a water deprivation test. These results will determine if in fact he does have Diabetes insipidus or not.
It was a long, soggy weekend and we're looking forward to getting some answers so that we can move forward with treatment.
This fella is definitely a momma's boy and is so, so good. He really likes being on a lap and he'll snuggle close when it's nap time.
To know that he was once cared for but then discarded because of an inconvenience leaves us wondering how many broken-hearted dogs a person like his previous owner could own in their lifetime if they give up this easily.
Having a dog is a responsibility and a commitment. They cost money, they cost time, and they make messes.
We can't imagine a full life without one.

Here's an update from Liz, Hoagie's foster mom!

"At first, Hoagie was an emotional mess, having been unceremoniously "evicted" from his second home and losing the humans he was deeply attached to. When he was finally surrendered to Good Catch Dog Rescue, his personal effects were sent along, including paperwork from the shelter, a bed, food, basic dog care items, and a jar of treats. However, something was missing from this array—his toys. As a foster for Good Catch Dog Rescue, I strongly believe in encouraging healthy play and enrichment to bond with our dogs. Hoagie, eager to please, is quickly learning how to navigate the dynamics of a multi-dog home. Taking on an alleged flight-risk dog was initially daunting, but it soon became clear that Hoagie was so devoted that he wouldn't even sunbathe outside without me.

We are his third stop on his way to "forever-ville," and we are committed to giving Hoagie a chance to dream of his ideal family. Hoagie envisions a home where he can enjoy the simple pleasures of life: a soft bed for cozy naps and a family who loves to cook. While he gets along with other dogs, he doesn’t need a fur-sibling to be happy. What Hoagie truly craves is the companionship of humans who will delight in his playful antics and loyal nature. This confident and mild-mannered gentleman is incredibly devoted and eager to share his unwavering loyalty with a loving family who will appreciate all the joy he brings."

Hoagie will soon be available for adoption.

Good Catch story time!
On Thursday evening we responded to a post where a good Samaritan (Amy) had found a small, stray dog at a very dangerous intersection near the highway. We offered to hold him while posting for his owner as his finder’s family was allergic and not able to.
Yesterday we met after he was taken to a vet to be scanned for a chip (no chip) and we chatted about the sequence of events and location he was picked up. Amy told me about how even though he’d gone potty outside like a house trained pup, he also went in his kennel a few times through the night. I assumed it was because he was new to their home and kennel and it was most likely an accident.
Just to be safe, I put a belly band on our new boy who we now call Tigger. Within 2 hours of him being home, he’d saturated his diaper. The odd thing was his diaper looked like it was full of water.
I made a call to Southern Winds Veterinary Services to get Tigger in for testing. Something was off. This boy was peeing water. His kidneys weren’t processing properly but without tests and the brains of our vets, I was clueless.
Many fosters ago, we had a pup named Ladybug who drank water like it was going out of style and seemed to not pick up on house training while she was in foster care with our friends, the Weavers. First we thought she was stubborn, then maybe a UTI, but it was Dr Alsop who diagnosed her with a rare disorder called Diabetes Insipidus. “Diabetes insipidus (DI) is rare in dogs, and is characterized by excessive thirst/drinking and the production of enormous volumes of extremely dilute urine. Some dogs may produce so much urine that they become incontinent (incapable of controlling their urine outflow). The irony of this disease is that despite drinking large volumes of water, the dog can become dehydrated from urinating so much.”
Ladybug’s condition was caught early on and she went on a synthetic hormone to replace what her body was lacking. She was adopted months later and is living the best life ever with a family devoted to her and her minor imperfection.
Tigger’s symptoms are very similar. His diapers were dripping after last night’s sleep and although he is a happy go lucky pup with a good appetite and a love of humans and dogs, this condition, if left untreated would be fatal.
So we can now surmise that Tigger wasn’t lost. That no one was looking for him. In fact, we can assume that this health condition he developed or has had, became inconvenient to his owners and despite there being a fix, it was more affordable for them to abandon him than treat.
This 1 1/2 year old, 12.8 lb chi mix was very lucky to be found when he was. There wasn’t any source of water for him that hot, dry day which for any “average” dog could be detrimental, but for a dog like him who requires constant hydration, an absolute death sentence if the traffic didn’t get him first.
Tigger will be headed to our good Dr. Alsop once again on Monday for a water deprivation test. They’ll keep a close eye on him and his levels to know what steps to take next. In the meantime, we’re doubling up on belly bands here and making sure he gets plenty of outdoor time with our dogs. He’s done amazingly well joining the Good Catch pack and we look forward to letting him go “belly bandless” in our home soon!
It seems that there is a high volume of individuals giving up on their pets when the going gets tough. If you’re reading this and you have, know this; your character and strength is not developing. You remain weak and you are a heavy burden on your community.

Saint Rocco and Saint Sylvester are officially adopted! We still have their brother Saint Anthony (green collar) and sister Saint Rita to find families for. They’ll be 13 weeks old on Sunday.❤️
These are some people loving puppies who yearn for attention and play. They love our big dogs and they also love snacks! Both Rita and Anthony are water babies. Fun and happy pups all around.

Yesterday, I came face to face with a dumper.
All kinds of dogs get dumped. Doodles, puppies, pregnant mommas, sick dogs, old dogs, every dog... When you've seen the look in a dumped dog's eyes, you don't forget it. You can tell the difference between a wandering dog who belongs somewhere local and one that has no idea where it is just by their "worried" expression. The first photo below is the look I'm telling you about. This is Hoagie, we've changed his name because we don't want to be connected to his previous owner who adopted him from a shelter just a few months ago. Hoagie was found 7 miles from home. You see, his adopters/dumpers had forgotten that he was microchipped. It happens a lot more than you'd think.
Yesterday, I rescued Hoagie from a ditch on the side of the road not far from where we live. When I got him home and settled, I scanned him and because we are a rescue, we were able to obtain his owner's info and I made a call. At 48 years old, I've had many years at strengthening my "women's intuition". As I interviewed his previous owner, I knew, as she lied over the phone about how he bolted out the front door on Monday and that they were so exhausted over looking for him that they hadn't been able to make a lost dog post "yet". I knew when she mentioned the kids were away at their grandparents. I knew when she made a poor excuse when I asked why a "flight risk" dog didn't have his collar with id on. I knew when she said her husband didn't want any involvement because it would make him too "sad". I knew when she called me a Godsend. I knew when I went to her house to pick up his paperwork and she didn't want to see him. I knew and I know.
Unlike most humans, dogs are transparent. They don't lie. They often present their feelings so clearly that just by looking at them, you can tell whether they are approachable or not. People are more advanced in this way. They can look "perfect" but be so much less than that you'd rather be friends with their dog than them.
Hoagie didn't escape on Monday, he was dumped on Saturday and we have evidence of that. We know the face, we know the car and now we know the name. He endured 3 nights in the country all by himself. He went without food for almost 4 days. His paws were raw from running the hot pavement (see video in comments) and his nerves were shot from the torrential downpour he had to suffer on Sunday. Only 12 pounds and 3 years old. His previous humans have all failed him and now, we begin again. Hoagie attached to me fast yesterday and now that he's with Liz and Chris, he's quickly become attached to them. This is NOT a dog who bolts. This is a dog who loves people so much that when I drove with him to his dumper's house yesterday before taking him to the vet, he wagged his tail with excitement and put his feet up on the dash because he thought he was going home.
Hoagie was fully vetted through the shelter he was adopted from back in May. Yesterday, along with an exam, he received a Proheart12 shot, and in a few weeks, we'll have a better sense of who he is and what kind of adopter he'll do best with. We rely on the same instincts in interviewing our applicants and their references. We have a growing rolodex of amazing people who have adopted from us because of these instincts and for this, we are most proud.

07/30/2024

Thanks to the kindness and compassion of the finders and a little bit of luck, the Good Catch family grew by two as we welcomed Millam and Macy into the pack. The brother/sister duo is approximately 4 1/2 months old. Macy weighs in at 25 lbs, and Millam weighs 23 lbs. They have already received their first round of vaccinations, have been dewormed, microchipped, and have been given flea/tick and heartworm preventatives. These pups are now living a much better life and are already gaining more socialization skills. Macy and Millam have quickly picked up on crate and leash training. We are excited to watch their personalities blossom in tandem with gaining self confidence while being in a loving home environment. They might look very similar, but they each bring their own unique, loving personality to the table. Stay tuned for their adoption debut coming soon!!!

Macy’ and Millam’s story…
Some of our followers might remember Stickers, the German Shepherd pup, who had been dumped in a rural area and found by an elderly couple on their property a couple of months ago. Stickers joined the ranks of Good Catch and was recently adopted by a wonderful out of state family. The elderly finders were thrilled to hear the good news, but their excitement was soon squashed. Two weeks ago, they were once again finders, but this time they were finders of two abandoned pups. The siblings were found at the same exact location where Stickers had been rescued. The boy pup was named Millam and the girl pup Macy. The finder’s help in keeping these pups safe and caring for them until placement could be found was a huge factor in this rescue mission. We sincerely appreciate all of their effort and support. The story of how they found their way into rescue is heartbreaking. Unfortunately, it is a carbon copy situation that most rescue groups and shelters are all too familiar with here in south Texas. Irresponsible pet owners selfishly leave a wake of chaos, cruelty, and suffering behind as they treat their “unwanted” pets like nothing more than disposable commodities. The most concerning issue is that those individuals feel absolutely no sense of shame, guilt, or remorse for their disgustingly, cruel actions. None of this will ever change until pet owners are held accountable for their actions. In the meantime, we will continue to rescue who we can.
