This hike is filled!
I will be offering a last-minute night hike at Moonville Tunnel on Saturday April 27 2024 at 8:00 p.m., telling local ghost stories, followed by a ghost hunt at the famous and haunted tunnel. The hike and ghost hunt will take about 2 hours. I will be walking an out-and-back section of the Moonville Rail Trail, and those interested can hike with me from Moonville town proper to Ingham Station/Bear Hollow.
The hike is free. It is a little over 1.5 miles one-way, a total of 3.0 miles on an easy, flat gravel railroad bed. It takes about 30-40 minutes to hike one way at a leisurely pace. However, we move steadily with a few short stops to hear the local ghost stories, so it may be too challenging for those with health issues, walking difficulties, or who are out of shape. It will be dark on the return. Bring a flashlight. No pets.
After, I’ll bring some ghost-hunting equipment so you can try a little ghost-hunting in the tunnel. And if you wish to download some of the online “ghost hunting” apps like Ghost Tube, we can test to see if they mirror some of the tried-and-true tools used over time.
Bring water and a flashlight or cell phone for light. There are no restrooms. The closest are a few miles away at Lake Hope State Park, just past the beach parking lot.
Please check https://www.facebook.com/ohioghoststories/ on FB before coming for weather/flooding or other updates. It is spring and the Moonville road floods after heavy rains.

I will have some of my Ohio, West Virginia, and Appalachian hikes books available (including the Moonville book, Haunted Hocking Hills, and the Vinton County haunts) for purchase for ten bucks a piece, but bring cash. There are no ATMs, and the cell phone services are sketchy.
Under 18 must have a parent/guardian. (Parent/Legal Guardian of hikers under 18 must sign the waiver! A responsible adult/parent/guardian must hike with underage children).
You must sign up for the hike at [email protected] or private message me here on FB.
EVERYONE TAKING THE HIKE MUST SIGN A WAIVER. Hikers must sign up by contacting me at [email protected] or private message on FB. If you do not get a reply from me, you are not signed up/on the list. I will send directions and information to those who signed up for the hike on Friday.

From deserted amusement parks to old factories being reclaimed by nature, there is certainly an interesting mix of abandoned places in Ohio.

Some who visit Blue Limestone Quarry in Delaware, about 26 miles north or Columbus, have seen lights easing along a railway and tunnel nearby. Others have reported strange whispers and tiny, pale orbs bobbing around in the park, especially near a tunnel. It is a mystery pinpointing the exact cause of the spectral lights and ghostly sounds. The area has been used for centuries—quarrying began in 1840 and ended in the 1930s. After, it became a private park and then a city park.

Many attribute strange sights and noises to the deaths in the quarries—in 1961, a man drowned swimming with friends in the calm waters. In 1967, two Ohio Wesleyan college students discovered a 19-year-old nurse’s aide’s partially dressed body floating in the water at the park. Others have a different opinion. They believe nearby train wrecks have left an apparition or two; one occurring northeast of town was a horrific crash only two days before Christmas in December of 1934. A train speeding through Delaware filled with holiday passengers and mail collided with a second train just past a curve outside town. When the midnight No. 42 sped around the cut-off just outside Delaware, it rammed into the third car back from Central’s eastern mail locomotive, No. 28. Two of the locomotives turned over in a ditch. Three railroad employees died.

You can find this story and directions to hike it (along with 18 more haunted Ohio hiking trails) in one of my newest books:
