Unfortunately with a very heavy heart I have to announce that Fig has lost her battle with the sudden onset of pneumonia despite oxygen and antibiotics. She went with me talking to her and telling her it was ok. Due to this unexpected loss hitting so hard I have decided to take a step back from the rescue world to gather myself.

Gucci’s cleft palate 4 weeks old vs now at 7 months old. Eating kibble just fine and drinking out of a normal water bowl like any other dog.

Day 22 for Fig. We’re on kibble and down to 3 formula feedings by tube a day now! Life is very hard for a Fig.

Not clefties but we have some house guests that are crashing here until they go to a no-kill rescue next week to be fixed, vetted and find homes! Never know what kind of call/message I’m going to get on what animals will need me.

Fig is 3 weeks old today! Full of sass and now switching to kibble (which she LOVES!) I can’t believe it’s already been 3 weeks since I got the call that she needed rescuing.

So what should you do if you have a pup born with a cleft lip or palate? First thing to do is clear the afterbirth away extremely well and suction out as much fluid as possible. Keep the pup warm on a heating pad separated from siblings and mom. This is when you have to be quick on deciding if you yourself are willing to learn how to tube feed (either by videos online or by a vet who is willing to teach you.) Keep in mind if you choose to this consists of waking up every 2 hours around the clock to feed/potty. If you decide it’s not for you then contact a local person/rescue who has done it before. To help the pup out and set it up for the best chance at an immune system try to collect as much colostrum as you can from mom and store in the fridge until their first feeding.

Fig is a hair under 17oz now and it’s getting so hard to hold her one handed anymore 😂

Fig’s after pottying face 😂 She’s taking in 15-16Ml a feeding now every 3 hours like a champ! Into other news I’ve added a bigger and better scale to the setup I keep and also 50 of 60ml syringes since I know this girl is going to be an eater! All arrives on Tuesday and it can’t come soon enough haha! Adding a few more items to the Amazon wishlist that I’ll be needing soon but can’t get until next paycheck unless someone buys them.

Fig is up to 10ml every 2 hours now and it looks like she’ll be up to 15-20ml before I know it! Time to order more syringes since I only have 5ml and 10ml handy currently😂 If anyone has unused 20ml-60ml single pack, sterile syringes they’re not using I’m always looking for them!

15 hour update on Fig. She went on an adventure this morning between feedings by climbing out of her box and traveling 6 feet across my master bedroom hardwood floors. This is definitely a first for me to have one this lively at not even 24 hours old. This is going to be an interesting 6 weeks 😂
