Bare bottom, smooth rocks, caves and my favorite thing, LIVE PLANTS.
Looks like Java Moss and Frogbit, with a big Pothos.

You know I love to see pictures of the axolotls that I've raised and their new homes.
Here's a photo I just received.
Such a great picture! Nice clean aerated water. Bare bottom tank. Wood and caves to explore.
There are three living in this tank. Cleo, Nova and Neptune.
They look healthy and happy!
Can an axolotl look happy? I think so! They have a permanent smile but it's really their gills that show how they are feeling. Every time you look at your axolotl, do a quick glance at their gills, the "floofs" as people say.

A Lotl Land disaster...and recovery.
After moving the 4- month old axolotls into a large tub, some began to die from a white fungus. I started doing more frequent water changes but that didn't help and only slowed my decision to really treat the problem.
I waited too long, and some died, but I'm telling you about it to talk about a successful treatment.
I emptied the large tubs and put them back into individual containers. I treated each container with a single drop of methylene blue After 12 hours , I changed the water and did not add medication. Then 12 hours later, water change and methylene blue. 12 hours later, fresh water and no blue.
So, you can see the pattern. Every 12 hours, a water change. Medication for 12 hours. I did this for 3 days. A few axolotls died on that first day, they were very weak. The survivors are eating well, looking good, and getting stronger.
These will not be available until the fungus is but a distant memory.

Here are Dipstick and Casper.
In a divided tank it's easy to have a single filter and let the water pass through the divider, but I really like the effort here to have two good-quality corner box filters.
Also, we see smooth rocks and live plants in the pots. Also, the tank is not filled to the top.
Nice setup!

Thanks to BW for giving one of our axolotl's this great home.
Live floating plants and other plants in pots. A bare bottom. Several hiding places.
A thermometer to keep an eye on.
Those live plants will keep the water quality stable. Occasional water changes, like 20-25% every few weeks, and this is one lucky axolotl.

I try to feed my Axolotls earthworms as often as I can. I also feed them Axolotl pellets.
When worms are scarce and you want to provide some variety, here are some other choices.
Shrimp, salmon, fly larvae ( sold as "bug bites"), and pillbugs (roly polys).

We are taking these perfect axolotls to the Quad Cities Fish Swap on Sunday. Some were born February 6, some born March 1.
They really are perfect. Raised separately from each other. Never attacked or cannabilized by each other to survive. It's harder to do it this way but it's the right way.
Just today, I saw a photo where someone is selling axolotls. Several of them in the same cup. One big axolotl, some medium, some very tiny. Think about how that happened, and the seller doesn't try to hide it. What other shortcuts were taken? Water changes. Feeding.
I realize I've gotten on a rant but these axolotls
have been raised correctly from day one, and the thing that has amazed me is that EVERY SINGLE ONE of the people who have bought our axolotls wants to continue that level of care. I never get tired of hearing how our young axolotls are doing.

We see live plants, a cave, fine-grained substrate and I know JB is collecting earthworms for them.

This is EQ, the cute axolotl with personality. EQ can be found laying around in almost any position.
He eats, he's growing, he's healthy as far as I can tell. Maybe someday he'll act like a normal axolotl, but for now he's unique.
Do you root for the underdog? Do you take in pets that need you more than the others? Well, EQ is special. If you want to give him a home, text us. I haven't offered him for sale to anyone yet, until right now. I wanted to make sure this is not affecting his health.

If your main tank is not ready, you can keep a small axolotl in a plastic tub or bucket or glass container. Change the water daily.

NH bought axolotls from us. Two of them are going to live in this 29 gallon tank (30" long).
Again, notice the setup. A sponge filter, the bare bottom, a live plant, a piece of driftwood to clamber about on, or hide under, and the thing floating on the surface is an Indian Almond leaf. It will sink to the bottom soon.
The best part? The kids are so excited to have axolotls!

JP is doing it right . He picked up two of our GFP axolotls. ( those are the ones that glow green under a blacklight)
For a few days he has them in these glass bowls, but they will soon be in a 10-gallon tank, and he has ordered a tank divider on Amazon. Also, he is adding plants in terra-cotta pots.
