For some reason, many people think of days like today as "bad weather" and avoid going outside. Dogs have an innate need to spend time outdoors, moving their bodies freely. I personally think humans have that same need. To be blunt, if we let go of this bad weather attitude, put on clothes that keep us comfortable, and just go out and have a good time, even the little dogs will embrace the experience and everyone's mental and physical health and behavior will be better. I'm not saying you can never miss a day of meeting your dog's (and your) needs for movement and nature therapy. I AM saying that there are very few weather conditions that constitute an excuse. My caring about dogs welfare side wishes more people agreed with me. My loving of solitude side is glad few do. We had the trail to ourselves today.
Glimmer Dogs, a great group!
Feels weird to be here for a ski race and there's no snow on the ground. Ski hill is reportedly good to go and if the forecast is correct, we're going to see some white tomorrow! Pups are excited to hike and play.
Yes, the dogs get to play at Forrest School but this style isn't for everyone. Without my guidance this would turn into a lot of unproductive chaos that would not foster the kind of relationships and behavior that is helpful for dogs. It IS very helpful for herding dogs (there are 4 plus one toy breed at my feet while shooting this) to remain calm and uninvolved while the chaos they would very much like to take control of is going on. Their ability has taken a lot of time to build. They are now at the point that they offer it.
I will ALWAYS reinforce this with food. What does this translate to in the real world?
A dog that can remain calm and neutral about triggers in their environment.
Things that make me happy part 2. I love Fitz so much! Sound on.
We've started a thing on Thursday mornings -- all the Glimmer Dogs and their parents who are ready gather for a hike. It's my new most favoritest thing. Yes, that's a word - look it up.πβ€
Full Day Forrest School Fun! Thanks to our wonderful pool hosts, Cali and Archie (and their parents). We had a blast at Forrest School in the morning, had a nice nap to recharge, and headed to the pool for the afternoon. What a day!
