Solensia is the first and only FDA-Approved treatment to control osteoarthritis pain in cats. Did you know that 60% of cats over 6 years old are affected by osteoarthritis? By 12 years of age this number rises to 90% of cats. Solensia is a monthly injection that reduces pain in cats. It is a monoclonal antibody that targets NGF, a key driver in OA pain progression. We have been successfully helping cats with OA for many months now. If you think your cat might benefit from Solensia, please call us to schedule an evaluation.

Halloween tips.
10/16/2022

Halloween tips.

As each holiday comes around the sundial, it presents new challenges for worried dogs. Halloween might not include backyard fireworks (yet), but it does offer surprises where dogs otherwise walk comfortably every day.

If you're not already walking your dog with a good treat pouch hooked to your waist, you might be missing a good opportunity to practice counter-conditioning skills. When you encounter any graves, ghosts, skeletons or jack o'lanterns, watch your dog's reaction. If you see any hesitation or concern, back away and offer food with a happy voice (you know the voice - the kind that brings neighbors to their windows with concerned expressions). The most important piece is to allow your dog to make his own choice about approaching.

It's not necessary to feed only approaches and curiosity. Feeding worry can also be very helpful.

If your dog is significantly frightened, leave and give it another go tomorrow; there are weeks to go for changing your dog's emotional response from fear to indifference (or, more likely, excitement about more cheese).

Donald A. Abt, VMD

This morning we lost a wonderful friend and mentor to so many.
(Especially to me, but many of us feel the same way).

In his own words:
As a native born New Englander, participating in AQUAVET® was always a homecoming since I have spent my summers in Falmouth, MA since the age of 3 years and grew up on the Massachusetts South Shore. Interest in veterinary medicine developed very early and was accentuated by the usual procession of dogs, cats, goats and a horse. Although veterinary medicine had always been the only serious choice of vocation, avocations of sailing and photography constantly vie for attention and on occasion win out for brief periods of time.

Following a 4 year period at the University of Massachusetts where a B.S. in Zoology was earned, I headed for Philadelphia to study veterinary medicine at the University of Pennsylvania from which I graduated in 1961. The next 3 years were spent in the Anatomy Department where I taught gross and microscopic anatomy and did research on bovine lymphosarcoma. This research work managed to alter my original career goal of orthopedic surgery with the result that I then spent two years at the Henry Phipps Institute of the School of Medicine where I studied epidemiology and biostatistics. Returning to the veterinary school faculty, I continued my research work and teaching of biostatistics and epidemiology until 1970 when I took on the responsibilities of Associate Dean for Curriculum to implement the new Core-Elective Curriculum then being instituted. The next 19 years were spent as Professor of Epidemiology & Biostatistics and Associate Dean of the Veterinary School. In September of 1989, the homecoming became permanent when I moved to Falmouth on Cape Cod to become the full time director of the University of Pennsylvania's Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Medicine and Pathology at the Marine Biological Laboratory. Our mission completed, the laboratory was closed in 1999.

My role in AQUAVET® resulted from spending the summer of 1976 exploring the potential for such a program with various Woods Hole scientists and others in veterinary medicine who shared my belief that our profession had the ability to make a contribution in this area. To do so required that we create an entirely new program. AQUAVET® is the result of that effort. After 25 years as the Founding Director, the end of 2001 brought retirement as Professor Emeritus of Aquatic Animal Medicine and Pathology.
