E-collars, or cones, are actually lifesavers in disguise. They prevent dogs from licking, chewing, or scratching at wounds or surgical sites, giving them a better chance at recovery. While they might look a bit funny or awkward, e-collars are a small price to pay for your pup’s health and healing!

📢 Important Pet Health Alert: Understanding Blastomycosis in Dogs

What is Blastomycosis? Blastomycosis, commonly known as "Blasto," is a serious fungal infection in dogs caused by inhaling spores from the Blastomyces dermatitidis fungus. This fungus thrives in decaying wood and soil. Dogs can become infected when the soil is disturbed by human or animal activity. 🍄

Seasonal Considerations: Most cases of blastomycosis in dogs are diagnosed in late summer or early fall. 🍂 However, some reports indicate that localized pulmonary cases may onset in winter or fall, likely due to warmer weather exposure during incubation.

Symptoms to Watch For:
-Draining skin lesions
-Eye infections leading to sudden blindness
-Lameness and joint pain
-Orchitis (testicular inflammation)
-Seizures
-Persistent coughing
-Enlarged lymph nodes

These symptoms can vary, so it is important to seek veterinary advice if you notice any unusual signs in your dog. 🩺

Diagnosis: Blastomycosis can often be diagnosed in the vet's office through cytology, as the organism is typically shed in large numbers in draining lesions. Additionally, a screening blood test can help determine potential exposure.

Treatment: Treating blastomycosis requires long-term antifungal medications, usually ranging from 2 to 6 months.
💊 Medications Commonly Used:
-Itraconazole
-Ketoconazole
-Fluconazole
-Amphotericin B

Keep your pets safe by being aware of the symptoms and seeking prompt veterinary care if you suspect an infection. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to managing blastomycosis effectively.

World Mosquito Day is celebrated on August 20th every year to raise awareness about the threat of mosquito-borne diseases. In addition to being harmful to humans, mosquitoes can also transmit diseases to animals. Heartworm disease is an infection that can be transmitted to our dogs and cats by the bite of an infected mosquito. That means that our pets do not need to be around other animals to become infected with heartworm disease. Luckily for pet owners, heartworm disease can be very easy to prevent, pick up some preventives at your vet's office today!

As summer heats up, it's vital to keep your dog safe. Check out what our very own Dr. Tim Hunt says to watch out for! Watch for heat stroke signs during outdoor activities—exercise in the cooler morning hours and avoid hot asphalt. Never leave your dog in a car, as temperatures can rise quickly. Also, be cautious of blue-green algae in water bodies, THC edibles that dogs might ingest, and toxic compost piles. Protect your pup from accidental poisoning by mushrooms and ensure they are secure during fireworks or in traffic. Keep your summer safe and fun for you and your furry friend! 🌞🐕

Rehab Highlight ✨ Everyone say congratulations to Thelma, who graduated from rehab a few weeks ago! Dr. Hunt performed a Tibial Plateu Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) to correct a rupture to her cranial cruciate ligament (CCL). After her staples were removed, she was able to begin rehab therapy with LVT,CCRP Laura. She completed a total of five sessions, which included a combination of laser therapy, massage, use of the underwater treadmill, and therapeutic exercises on balance equipment. Final x-rays are typically taken eight weeks post-op to make sure the tibia healed completely. Thelma's x-rays looked great and, as you can see, she is back to her happy, goofy sweet self. 😍

August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month! Does your dog get acute moist dermatitis (commonly called "hot spots")? These are inflamed and infected areas of a dog's skin. They often appear as red, moist, and irritated patches that can be very painful and itchy for the dog. In more severe cases, like this one, they can become infected and ooze pus. Hot spots are typically caused by excessive licking, scratching, or biting due to allergies, insect bites, poor grooming, or underlying skin infections. In severe cases, like this one, they can become infected and ooze pus. Before you ask how the owner could let it get this bad before bringing her in - hot spots can spread like wildfire and fester like this overnight. If you notice your dog developing a hot spot, it's recommended to shave the area and keep it DRY! Moisture harbors bacteria and only adds fuel to the fire. There are often underlying causes of hot spots, so it's always best to get your pet in for an exam to help avoid these in the future.

This particular case was treated with a steroid combination and oral antibiotics. This patient was sedated during the clip and clean process, as it was very uncomortable. We set up a two-week recheck appointment to see how she is doing and will continue with a treatment plan then. After deliberation with the owner, this patient will likely be put on an oral anti-itch/anti-inflammatory medication called Apoquel.

Staff Highlight-✨ Kenzie, Customer Service Representative
I started working at Bayshore as a CSR in 2023 and have been enjoying it ever since! I was born and raised in the U.P. and earned my Bachelor’s Degree in English from NMU in 2019. I’ve loved learning about and interacting with animals from a young age and am so excited to be at Bayshore where I now get to pursue that every day. My little family consists of me, my husband, Paul, and our two cats, Momo and Appa. When I’m not at work I love spending time with my family and friends, enjoying the sunshine whenever possible, reading, writing, and playing video games!
Make sure to say "hello!" to Kenzie when you see her at your next appointment!

Case Study: Canine C-Section Procedure on Flora Sue
July 16, 2024
Patient: Flora Sue, 4-year-old Corgi
Veterinary Hospital: Bayshore Veterinary Hospital

Overview: On July 16, 2024, Flora Sue, a 4-year-old Corgi, underwent a successful cesarean section at Bayshore Veterinary Hospital. A cesarean section (C-section) in canines is a surgical procedure used to deliver puppies when natural birth is not recommended or poses risks to the mother or the puppies.

Procedure Details: Flora Sue underwent a thorough examination, including blood work and imaging, to assess her health and the puppies' status. She was administered general anesthesia to ensure she remained pain-free and immobile during the surgery. An incision was made in Flora Sue's abdomen and uterus to carefully deliver each puppy. Each puppy was immediately handed to a veterinary technician/assistant to ensure their airways were clear, stimulate breathing, and provide initial care. After all the puppies were delivered, the surgical site was closed with sutures, and Flora Sue was placed in a recovery area.

Summary: Flora Sue delivered seven healthy puppies, each showing signs of vitality immediately post-birth. The mother and her litter were monitored closely post-surgery to ensure their well-being. Thanks to the skilled team at Bayshore Veterinary Hospital, Flora Sue and her seven puppies are all happy and healthy, marking a joyous occasion for their owners and the veterinary staff alike.

Helping families say goodbye to their pets is incredibly hard and takes an emotional toll on all veterinary professionals. For every euthanasia we perform, we send out something called a sympathy card, extending our condolences to our clients. 💔 We recently received a thank you/sympathy card from one of our clients, expressing their gratitude and sharing how we provided amazing care, even though the outcome was not what we were all hoping for. 🪽 Acts of kindness, like this one, can lift spirits and remind vet workers that their hard work and compassion are noticed and valued. 🐾

It has been one month since Mac got adopted! 🎉 Many of you helped share Mac’s story, if you don't remember- Mac was found abandoned and tied to a pole. 💔 After he was confirmed to be a stray with no owner, Bayshore was able to assume ownership. We ran bloodwork, neutered him, and updated all his vaccines.
A month after his adoption date, we are happy to report that he is thriving in his new home! He loves cuddling and hiking with his owners, and has found his forever family! 🐾 He also has his own Instagram page called .p._mac, where he shows off his adventures! 🐶

This is Maverick. Maverick went outside a few weeks ago to use the bathroom and inadvertently got between a mama bear and her cubs. Poor Maverick meant no harm but unfortunately the bear attacked him. He was rushed in as an emergency where we immediately began diagnostics. His x-ray showed a tear in his trachea (as you can see in the red circle).

The arrow represents subcutaneous emphysema (swelling under the skin). He was hospitalized and treated with IV fluids, pain medication, and some antibiotics. Dr. Hurley placed a drain tube in the wound site to prevent fluid from building up. This allows healing and reduces risk for infection. Luckily for Maverick, he was able to go home the very next day. 👏

Litter Box Tips for a Happy Cat 😸
Did you know cats have a sense of smell 14 times stronger than humans, so it's crucial to keep their litter boxes clean. Here are some quick tips:

1. Scoop Regularly: Clean the litter box at least once a day to manage odors and maintain hygiene.
2. Sufficient Boxes: Have one litter box per cat plus one extra to reduce stress and encourage use.
3. Regular Cleaning: Completely change the litter and wash the box frequently with mild soap and water.
4. Monitor Changes: If your cat stops using the litter box, it could signal a medical issue. Consult your vet to rule out any health problems.

Following these tips ensures a clean and comfortable environment for your cat.
