Heartworm Disease - Do you use Heartworm prevention for your dog? If not, this video we took at our clinic is the reason you should. This is from a dog that came in that tested positive for Heartworm. In the center of the video you can see the microfilaria moving (these are the baby worms).

How is heartworm disease transmitted, by a mosquito. Adult female heartworms living in an infected dog, fox, coyote, or wolf produce microscopic baby worms called microfilaria that circulate in the bloodstream. When a mosquito bites that animal and takes a blood meal from an infected animal, it picks up these baby worms, which will develop and mature into “infective stage” larvae over a period of 10 to 14 days. Then, when the infected mosquito bites another dog, the infective larvae are deposited onto the surface of the animal's skin and enter the new host through the mosquito’s bite wound. Once inside a new host, it takes approximately 6 months for the larvae to mature into adult heartworms. Once mature, heartworms can live for 5 to 7 years in dogs. Because of the longevity of these worms, each mosquito season can lead to an increasing number of worms in an infected pet.

Today is a day for great news! Please help us welcome Dr. Sarah Bogaudo to our practice. Dr. Bogaudo is well known to us, she worked at our clinic during summers when she was in her pre-vet program at NMU. She then continued her shadowing and externships at our office while obtaining her veterinary degree from Ross University. Dr. Bogaudo grew up in the Iron Mountain area and enjoys spending her free time with her pets and the many outdoor activities in our area, She is a great addition to our clinic family and we are so happy to have her practicing at our clinic.
