A week ago we got to attend the USBCHA Sheepdog National Finals! It felt like a whirlwind of a trip leaving just a day and a half after Helene wrecked so much of our area. My heart was home while I was trying to get my head on to run my dogs for what we’ve been working towards all year.

Flynt had her Open preliminary run on Monday and did everything I asked of her. The biggest bobble we had was in the shed ring when I just rushed it and didn’t set her up properly and called her in on a terrible try. My fault. We put them back together and she carried me again on a terrible setup but got the shed this time. I told her I’d do better next time. We came away with a 164, a score that put us in the hot seat all through prelims until Thursday, but it held and we made it to the semi finals sitting 36th out of 150 dogs! 💪

Her semifinal run on Saturday was at the hottest part of the day! And the sheep were HEAVY. We had a good OLF, and then she worked her but off just to get through the drive. Finally to the shed ring we got our collared sheep with a much nicer shed than our first round, but the exhaust draw was so strong and by the time our shed was called the rest of the sheep had run to the exhaust. We tried to regroup them, but they called us off with just 20seconds left. I really wish we would have been able to get a score, but I was so pleased with how hard she worked for me.

Rip’s nursery showing was sad for me. He has been phenomenal all year and I feel like caught a bad break and as a result didn’t really get to show what he was made of. He had the best outrun I personally had seen on that tricky nursery field, and I’m not just saying that, his practice at our place going over hills and letting sheep go out of sight on outruns prepared him well to have an appropriate and beautiful outrun on that field. As he was making his way up the field I could see one of his sheep was getting antsy and the set out was having to work hard to keep her in place. Once he got to the top I couldn’t see him at all, but the sheep broke to the right and then quickly went out of sight over the ridge (sheep were basically sitting on top of the ridge for set out). They were gone for about 3minutes and I was about to call the run when here comes sheep heads over the ridge! 😱🙌🤩 I was SO PROUD of Rip. That was all him working them up with my useless whistles of support faintly heard from the post. He brought them up and we got them about halfway through the drive before we timed out. I think that’s the most disappointed I’ve ever walked off a trial field, cause he did so well but the score wouldn’t/couldn’t reflect that.

The rest of our time was spent enjoying the company of so many wonderful handlers and their dogs! Very grateful that I get to be a part of such a fun and challenging sport! Motivated to get to work for next year.

I have softly (but apparently not so softly) opened up my schedule for private lessons after being on maternity leave these last 6 weeks. I am almost fully booked for the limited lessons I’m taking for the next two weeks. If you’re wanting to schedule I’d suggest reaching out sooner rather than later as I’m not sure when I’ll open up more time slots. If you have reached out and I haven’t responded please send me a reminder! Thank you everyone for the support and kind words while I’ve been away, I have the best students and friends!

So grateful for awesome dogs! This boy had a fantastic weekend of runs at Glenrose Farms SDT. Got a 1st and a 2nd in Nursery which made him Overall Nursery Champ for the weekend. And then he had to go outdo himself by placing 4th in his debut Open run! Go Rip!

In true young dog fashion the Bluegrass was a bit all over the place as far as placing goes for Rip and I. But he was great, tried hard, for the most part kept his cool and most importantly was my partner for all our runs, which is all I can ask for. He earned himself a 6th place out of 60 dogs the first round, getting our pen and everything, which is a struggle for him with the need for open flanks and all 😂. A couple rounds later that issue is what kept us from penning (we needed those points to be competitive with other runs), but a solid go for the rest of the course. We timed out on the drive the second round and gripped off on the drive another round. Overall I am really pleased with his consistently beautiful outruns and overall listening on some really tough sheep. He’s moving up to open soon, so off we go to work on our shedding.

Our first time competing in the open class at the Bluegrass and I am so pleased with how we did! We may have bombed out a little on the first go round but the second we got our shed and timed out at the pen and ended the run with a respectable score of 64! This girl is an awesome teammate and I can’t wait to keep getting better with her.

Two ram lambs (3/4hair 1/4wool crosses, born end of January beginning of February) and a 2yr old ewe need some new pastures. Ewe (hair cross) lambed a single ram lamb this year on her own in the field, first time lambing and did just fine.
