Sebastian just wants to go home and love you. He's good with cats, kids, other dogs and even annoying family members. He also loves to just curl up and snuggle on the couch.

Sebastion also wants everyone to know that our shelter is completely full of dogs—amazing dogs. We have those dogs that everyone always asks about: small dogs, dogs that are good with cats, dogs that are good with chickens, dogs that love everything and everyone, dogs that love to hike, dogs that want to be lazy, dogs that would make great friends with your dog that needs a friend!

If you have been looking for that special new friend, now is the time!

Call us, message us, email us or just stop by! We are open every day except for Thursday and Sunday from 10-2, but can make appointments after hours if needed.

Is there a sweet dog-lover out there who is good at making lemonade out of lemons? If so, we could use a bit of that recipe for this baby! Reece (AKA Reece's Pieces) is a 5 year old gentle Catahoula whose elderly owner had to surrender her because of their own health issues. This sweet Reece is a calm, loving girl who just wants a gentle pal to hang with. She loves nothing more than to sit at your feet on the porch or by the fire and watch the world go by. Her previous owner was an older person and we're noticing that Reece is still gravitating to people who fit that description! She definitely likes the older and wiser (or maybe just calmer) types! Might that be you? We know lemonade and peanut butter are a unique combination, but if you're up for something new, come meet this cuddle bug and get ready for a sweet autumn treat!

Want to learn a new language? Great! Let's start with the word "Gatita"! It's the Spanish word for "kitten" but it also just happens to be the name of one of our most charming residents who is now looking for a home! OK, so maybe Gatita can't teach you Spanish, but if you adopt this little fluff ball, you'll find yourself speaking in all kinds of new ways as you delight in her cuteness--from squeaky baby talk and high-pitched cooing, to quiet nuzzling and definitely a few joyous exclamations! In return, you'll receive a lesson in kitten language--all the comforting purrs, all the adorable tiny peeps, and the full meows of gratitude she'll give you for providing her with a loving home. Hurry in to meet Gatita soon and learn a whole new language of love!

Sherlock came in to the shelter 6 months ago - skin and bones with no manners and a big voice. Our shelter volunteers poured so much love into Sherlock over his stay with us - from taking him on beautiful mountain hikes, to stealing him away for day visits to their homes. He learned about life filled with love and people and learned all about being a “house” hound. Sherlock’s flyer caught the eye of a young woman visiting Weaverville for work and a few weeks later he was jumping in her car for his biggest adventure yet - heading to his new home in Chicago!

His new mom’s recent update had us cheering for Sherlock! “He has not had a single accident in the house and sleeps through the night in his crate without issue. He also independently goes in there during the day if he doesn’t want to sleep on his bed or on the rug. I’ve been walking him for about 2-3 hours a day total and that seems to be enough- he sleeps, lightly plays with his toys or asks for belly rubs the rest of the time. He LOVES the pink ball y’all gave him and the squirrel. He’s also mastered stairs and has no problem with the cars and general noise of where we live. Lastly, he has not barked once which we’re so happy with. We are just so impressed! He’s still understanding the noise of the L (elevated trains) but that one might always be a bit scary. He also went with my friends and I to a brewery and he was the true star of the show. Anyway, I want to thank y’all SO MUCH for taking such great care of him and being his most important stop on the way to me. He’s clearly been so loved on and cared for and I’m sure that’s why he’s been so easy. I’m so grateful that I saw his flyer a month ago- he’s truly the best and I cannot wait for all we’ll do together.”

URGENT KITTEN NEED! These adorable 5-week-old kittens are still tiny and need some extra TLC, including syringe feeding and food encouragement. They also are still requiring one overnight feeding. Their current foster is ill and needs a respite foster ASAP. There are 6 of these darling kittens, so if we had two fosters step up this morning to take 3 kittens each, that would be amazing!!! It should only be a couple of days while the current foster recovers. Please call/text me on the foster line at 828-319-5343 or email the shelter at [email protected], so that I can coordinate pickup at the shelter today.

Please support our partner Shelter Dog Transport Alliance, who took in a special-needs stray from us who was blind, in pain and needed eye surgery. “Ray Ray” had spent an unknown number of months (or years!) in this condition and he now has a second chance to live a pain free life thanks to this wonderful organization! Please consider donating to them so that they can keep helping animals like Ray 🐾❤️

Have you ever thought about a kitty as being a one-of-a-kind miracle-working of the universe? Something unique and special that can't ever be recreated? Well, that's our little Peapod! She's definitely got her own scrappy thing going on--she's a little bit of scruff, a little bit of spice, a little bit of enlightened wisdom--and a whole lotta love! At only 6 pounds and barely 1 year old, she's already lived a lot of life--but she has fought her way back from the edge and now has a distinctive, quirky personality and a joyful pep in her step! Her foster parents nurtured her and prepared her for a good life ahead--but that life isn't being fulfilled in the shelter. Will you be the one who benefits from what the universe can provide? Peapod might be just the thing you've been asking for! Make an appointment to come meet this special creature soon!

Check out Babylock’s glow up from his intake photo to adoption update photos 2 1/2 months later! Babylock came in with a serious upper respiratory infection that had us concerned that he would even recover - his sinus cavity was so infected that it caused nerve damage that was luckily only superficial. After treatment and TLC in foster care he recovered and was adopted out as a healthy kitten but with permanent damage to one of eyes. His adopter sent us an update this week on how well he was doing, along with his sibling that they adopted the same day. Thank you to our foster homes that nurse our sickly kittens back to health and thank you to the adopter that saw beyond his rough start to life and gave him a second chance! ❤️

We have spent 2, now 3 days carefully catching 3 of the 5 dogs that appeared on Hwy 212 in Shelton Laurel over the weekend. One we are still working on catching and one unfortunately was hit and did not make it. Taking in four scared, skinny dogs with potential injuries during our busiest season with the shelter bursting at the seams has been a challenge, we will be looking for fosters for these dogs and donations to help cover their care. If you are interested in helping us with these dogs once we know more about what their needs will be please email us at [email protected]

We’ve got our own boy band! These 3 boys make up The New Pups on the Block. While none of them can sing all that well, they make up for it by being super cute. These pint-sized pups are about a year old, fully grown and are between 25 and 32lbs. They are all looking for great homes.

Call us at (828) 649-3190 or email us at [email protected] to make an appointment if you’d like to meet one of the NPOTB. (Slushy, Sorbet and Popsicle.)

Update on Ernest, the basset hound! He was discharged from Animal Hospital of North Asheville! Carolina Basset Hound Rescue picked him up to take him into their program.

Thank you to everyone who donated. We are overwhelmed with the generosity of this community! In just over one day, we received enough money to cover about 70% of his bill! If you would still like to donate, please use the link below.

Ernest was in very bad shape. He couldn’t walk, was delirious and had a horrible maggot infestation (the worst we’ve ever seen). He somehow dragged himself up 27 steps and collapsed on the porch of a kind person who contacted animal control. Another kind person stepped in to help carry him down the steps. His condition was critical, so he was rushed to the vet. Thank you to Animal Hospital of North Asheville for taking such great care of him, to Carolina Basset Hound Rescue, and to everyone who helped Ernest! 🐾

We need our community’s help! We took in a basset hound who was incredibly sick and in need of immediate medical attention. This smart guy found his way onto a kind person’s porch and collapsed.

He’s now with one of our amazing veterinary partners and after a few rough days, he’s turned a corner. He’s walking on his own, eating and drinking, and loving on the medical staff!

Many have asked how they can help, so we are posting a link to our donation portal.

Mushroom had a super fun weekend adventure and we learned a lot of things about him in a home environment!

🤍 He loves water! Even on this chilly day he hopped into the water trough several times.
🤍 Chickens, horses, and goats don’t interest him much - he hasn’t been off leash around any of them yet, but on a long line he’s consistently choosing to give them a sniff and then move along.
🤍 He’s curious about cats, but he’s so far received two good skippety-paps from our dog savvy farm cats and he definitely got the picture.
🤍 Weight loss would do him a world of good. He wants to play with the other farm dogs, but he can’t quite keep up because he’s carrying too much body fat.

If you know anyone who is looking for a good family dog, this guy is an excellent candidate. He is very well-mannered and even crate trained! Come meet Mushroom today!
