Losing my beloved cat Carlos to cancer earlier this year left a huge void in my heart. I adopted him in 2021 after he spent months at the shelter, described as an unfriendly, seven-year-old cat. I had never had a cat before, but Carlos and I bonded instantly. He was by my side through some of the most pivotal moments of my life, including my sobriety journey, and losing him was incredibly difficult.
My friends and family encouraged me to adopt again, but after meeting several kittens, none of them felt like the right fit. I began to wonder if it just wasn’t the right time. That’s when I saw Michi (formerly known as Creamsicle) on Whiskers Trap Neuter Return's page. She was an almost two-year-old FIV+ cat, and although I’d originally been looking at kittens, something about Michi stood out to me. Whiskers TNR was incredibly quick and responsive—shortly after I submitted my application, they arranged for me to meet her.
When we met, she climbed right into my lap, and I felt an immediate connection—like she had been waiting for me. Two days later, she came home with me on a trial adoption.
I didn’t know much about FIV, but Whiskers was incredibly helpful and patient. They connected me with their vet, who had examined Michi after she was rescued. After speaking with the vet, asking plenty of questions, and doing my own research, I felt confident in making Michi’s health a priority. I started her on a high-protein, moisture-rich diet, daily probiotics, and supplements. In no time, her skin rashes cleared up, her respiratory issues improved, and she blossomed into a plump, healthy, and spoiled kitty.
Caring for Michi has been incredibly rewarding. She’s full of personality—demanding attention, playtime, and plenty of brushing—and she’s also affectionate, VERY talkative, and loves her naps and Cat TV videos. I was grateful for the chance to do a trial adoption. Living with children, I wanted to ensure Michi could thrive in our home without feeling stressed, which could worsen her FIV symptoms. Thankfully, she quickly adapted and loves playing with the kids. After a month of seeing how well she fit into our family, I was able to officially adopt her.
Adopting Michi has brought healing and joy back into my life. Whiskers TNR has been amazing throughout the entire process, and I’m so thankful Michi found her way to me. To anyone considering adoption, I encourage you to give overlooked cats a chance. Carlos, who was labeled unsociable and older, and Michi, who is FIV positive, have both been the most loving and joyful companions.
