We know there are a lot of worthy causes competing for your support on Giving Tuesday, but the cats and kittens at Whiskers asked that we make a case for them. 😉 If you’ve followed our rescue for long, you know that many of them arrive from dire situations. But thanks to our incredible volunteers – and supporters just like you – the trajectory of their lives completely changes in our care.

That was the case with a rural Warren County property that Whiskers first worked to TNR in 2023 and found ourselves helping again this summer when a new crisis emerged. Initially, the cats’ caretaker, a Vietnam veteran with disabilities, contacted us when he realized he needed to help his more than 40 cats. Many were sick with respiratory illnesses. Several were pregnant or already had kittens struggling to survive in the nooks and crannies of his acreage.

It was a monumental day a year ago when we knew we’d finally TNR’ed every cat there, adopting out as many as we could.

It was an overwhelming day when we learned this summer that the veteran had to move and couldn’t take his remaining 20 or so cats with him. According to a court order, they would be “humanely euthanized” when the property changed hands.

The race was on. Whiskers TNR helped coordinate the rehoming of several of his cats in groups of two or three, but eight adult cats weren’t in good enough health to re-release outdoors. Reba, for instance, was dangerously thin and covered in her own drool. She needed to have all her teeth removed due to stomatitis – which came with a $1,336 bill.

In all, we needed to find $8,449 in our budget – at the height of kitten season, no less! – to meet their collective medical needs. Of course, their bright futures are worth every penny.

Simply put, happy endings like these wouldn’t happen without the support of people like you. Would you consider pitching in as you’re able this Giving Tuesday? It’s never been easier to give:

Can Levi giddy up to a forever home with you?

In the “Cowboy Brands” litter, Levi is the “medium personality” in between shy Justin and wild man Roper. In fact, one of his foster mom’s favorite things about him is “how he plays nonstop with his brother, Roper, and how he snuggles with his brother, Justin.” And, of course, how he melts the heart of any trusted human! Like Justin, Levi is a little slower to warm up to new people, but once he does, get ready for a purr as big as the Montana sky! “He will be your bestie. He LOVES to be held and LOVES forehead kisses.” He also enjoys a rousing (and oh so adorable!) game of catch-me-if-you-can with his person when the mood takes him! In fact, Levi is such a social kitten, he’d be happiest in a home with a feline buddy – maybe even “best friend” Roper. Can he giddy up to a forever home with you?

Roper wants to lasso ALL the love and fun he can get!

In the “Cowboy Brands” litter, there are three distinct personalities: shy but sweet Justin, social butterfly Levi, and then “such a little ham” Roper! “He has never met a stranger and, boy, can he get along with anyone,” says his foster mom. “He plays and snuggles SO hard. He is affectionate but also adventurous.” In fact, Roper is so outgoing, his foster mom thinks he needs a feline sidekick in his forever home – maybe even his “best friend” brother? “He would be so happy if his brother, Levi, came with. They are two peas in a pod!” According to his foster mom, not only does Roper stand out for his larger-than-life personality but also his exotic markings. “He is absolutely beautiful. He looks like a little leopard with gray, tan and brown stripes AND spots!”
Has this bold, happy kitten lassoed your heart?

We are thrilled to tell you about a recent surprise donation that feels a bit like a Christmas miracle!

Paws on Your Heart Pet Rescue Support, a nonprofit based in Guttenberg that supports animal rescues both financially and with encouragement/ideas, astounded us in November a $1,000 gift!

This money has been used toward a second oxygen concentrator at our holding facility, which has already helped save the life of Roper (pictured here), who arrived at Whiskers from a large outdoor colony being TNR'ed. Our first oxygen concentrator is needed during spay/neuter surgeries at our surgery suite, but this sweet boy was an emergency that couldn't wait! Fighting for air in the midst of respiratory distress due to pneumonia, he needed constant oxygen for several days that only a second oxygen concentrator could provide -- along with powerful antibiotics and, of course, so much tender loving care!

Today he is a happy, healthy boy nearly adoption ready in a Whiskers TNR foster home. Paws on Your Heart, your generous, unexpected donation was truly a lifesaver!

Oh boy, Whiskers followers, have we got an update for you! Earlier this year you read about the bonded pair Vinny and Claude (the “one-eyed charmer” and the “snuggler who likes belly rubs”) adopted by Sara. These two joined Sara’s other two cats – quite a full house, by some people’s standards. But there was room in Sara’s heart for another addition, a kitten named
O’Malley.
“When I first saw O'Malley's picture on Whiskers TNR's page, I knew it was meant to be! I have a type; he is my fourth one-eyed cat. I had recently lost my two oldest cats, one in April and the other in June. I was not really looking for another cat so soon, but when I saw the post about what he had been through, I had to apply to adopt him. He has been a welcome addition to ‘Sara’s Home for Misfit and Wayward Cats.’
What has really warmed my heart is the way he and Vinny have been interacting since Vinny came home from the hospital. Since his return, they have been a dynamic cuddling duo. I’ve been taking many photos of them, and my BFF, Tiffini, says they look like they’re on a poster for a buddy cop film. Two one-eyed cats, ready for mischief and crime-solving!
It’s been 16 years since I had a kitten in my home and I forgot how exuberant they can be! He especially enjoys causing mischief with his kitten sister Calamity Jane. He will grab stuffed animals in his mouth and drag them around the house! He also enjoys being held and keeps me company when I am getting ready for work. He is very nosy and has to inspect everything, especially if it is food! We’re working on not jumping onto the counters while I am cooking; he can be very persistent.
It is hard to believe it has already been four months since I adopted O’Malley! He has grown so much and is developing relationships with Vinny, Claude, Emma, and Calamity. He’s healthy as can be and I hope to have him for many years.”
To those considering adoption, Sara said it best in her previous post. “You have the chance to make a difference to an actual soul. Like a giant, glowing galaxy, but fun-sized. You can turn a life around. You can replace malice, hostility, and pain with love, comfort, and delight. If you have the ability and the desire, what’s stopping you?”

Here’s the Thing: Morticia is a spookily awesome cat!

In feline “Addams Family” here at Whiskers, Morticia lives up to her name as “fiercely loyal to her family,” says her foster mom. “Right now, that consists of her babies, Wednesday and Pugsley, and her foster family.” But you won’t catch this Morticia hacking the blooms off roses or creating three-headed dolls. This happy girl is “welcoming to all who visit her.” That goes for all new buddies of the kid, feline or canine variety! Her foster mom thinks she would thrive in any loving home that can give Morticia the attention she craves. “She NEVER stops purring. She just wants to be loved. She is such a good cat and deserves to live the decadent lifestyle of her namesake.” Can Morticia be your Querida?

Susanna and Ravenwyn are feeling thankful this holiday season that there is FINALLY a legal and safe treatment option for cats with FIP, otherwise known as Feline Infectious Peritonitis. Previously a deadly disease with no effective treatment, FIP is now a treatable disease. Times have changed and Stokes Pharmacy makes an anti-viral drug that treats FIP, and these two are on their way to a full recovery. This drug is fairly new, and some veterinarians don’t know about it, so we are grateful to have a veterinary team who can help us provide the most recent and advanced medical care to Whiskers cats. Please share this post to spread awareness that FIP is now a treatable disease!

Profiles will be updated soon in the Recovery Room section of the website https://whiskerstnr.org/recovery-room-cats/

Estee’s nocturnal antics are adorable!

Estee may look the part of a mysterious black kitten, but deep down she’s a sucker for being petted
and kitty wrestlemania! “She loves to wrestle with her sister, Sephora,” says her foster dad. “They get very rowdy overnight and everything is upset in the morning.” Originally from a large outdoor colony being TNR’ed, Estee makes the funniest meows when people are giving her attention, as though “she can’t decide if she is upset about being pet or loving it!” We think she would thrive in a quieter home so that she can continue to gain confidence and fully give in to the “loving it” side. “Estee is still very shy but has a sweet side hiding just beneath the surface. She likes to sound tough when you reach in to pet her, but once she gives in, her purr motor is SO loud.” Trust us – you can’t help but love Estee.

Spudnut is ready to pounce into his forever home!

If you’re looking for a “super easygoing” kitten who’s a constant source of joy and entertainment, you’d go nuts for Spudnut. “He is such a playful little dude,” says his foster mom. “He loves running all over the place and pouncing on his favorite toys.” That includes stuffed toys or his prized little ball with a bell in it – Spudnut isn’t picky! That goes for his companions, too. If they’re friendly to him, why, Spudnut is happy to return the favor. “He’s been exposed to other cats, dogs and kids. Nothing seems to faze him. I love his playful personality!” Ready for Spudnut to pounce into a forever home with you?

“Donut” you want to meet Long John?

When asked to describe Long John in a word, his foster mom’s first choice was “loving.” After all, this darling boy “immediately begins purring when you look in his direction or pick him up.”
But then, Long John has plenty of classic kitten playfulness up his sleeve, too. “He loves wrestling with his siblings. He’ll wait for one of them to run by, and then he will pounce on them!” He’s been a good buddy to other cats, dogs and kids in his foster home, too. “Nothing fazes him. He’s the cutest little thing.” Donut you want to meet Long John?
