Say Hi to Bean! This little terrier is the ultimate party animal, yet he's still up for a serious snuggle any time. His mom is quite proud of his academic skills - and rightly so! Bean loves to learn new tricks, and picks them up as fast as you can teach him. She says, "it's such a joy to watch him learn," and we couldn't agree more. Good pup, Bean!

Say hello to Lucy! This party girl loves to run and sniff, and she's learning that she can still smell ALL THE THINGS even if she slows down a little to let the humans holding her leash keep up.. She can be a little unsure of new people, but her Dad's very proud of her for making friends with the neighborhood kids. Good dog, Lucy!

Where will your dog go when they (or you!) need a break?
Do they need to be safely separated from guests when you can’t be with them?
Will they bug you during meal time or steal appetizers from the coffee table?

Create a chill out zone for your dog.
Here are some considerations:
* Where will it be? Do they need a quiet room or crate break, or will they do best in a bed close to the action?
* Quiet music might help some dogs settle, while white noise machines can help to mask the sounds of activity for dogs that react to noise.
* Prepping kongs, chews and snuffle mats ahead of time can reduce the stress for you when your dog needs something to do.

In part 2 of our holiday planning, let's plan for meeting guests. Whether your dog is a little too excited to see visitors, or avoids scary strangers, a bit of management can go a long way.
Here are a few things you might consider:
* Have guests text when they arrive, so you can prepare your dog
* If people carrying things (like big food platters) might be scary (or tempting!), it might be best for your dog to be in another area as folks are coming in
* Seated guests are less scary, and in many cases less tempting to jump on

Finally - is the idea of managing your dog during holiday madness overwhelming? Do you think it is just too much for your dog? If you and your dog might both enjoy the holidays more if they are away with a trusted pet care provider, that's ok! Just remember that options book up quickly during this time of year.

Say hi to Otis! Many of my clients work with me long term, but I also get the privilege of helping lab testing survivors like Otis settle into their new homes through great rescues such as The Beagle Alliance . Otis has been in his home for a year now, and he's thriving! His parents are especially proud of him doing the very brave dog behavior of sneaking behind them to beg for fries from strangers at a local event. Good boy, Otis!

Say Hi to Indy, the triple herding dog! That's right - Indy is a Border/Aussie/ACD, and he likes everyone to stay where they belong - especially the squirrels. He knows he's a very handsome boy and enjoys standing in the wind and letting his fur blow like Fabio, but he's also not afraid to get wet and dirty at the beach.

Day 4: Prep the House
Put bedding in your dog’s preferred hiding areas - you want to make their safe space as comfy as possible
Prep extra bedding to give your dog in unexpected safe spots
Close windows before dark
Have a leash on hand in case the dog needs to go out late

Dog says "Aah"

**SOUND ON!** A while back I promised to show Mighty Mutt Becka's final open mouth cue. Here it is!

You might be surprised at all the uses for your dog's trained behaviors. Next time you're getting annoyed with a day to day chore, do a little brainstorming and see if your dog might be able to help!

No Running with Scissors!

When preparing to use scissors to groom your dog, it's important that your pup is able to stay super still - especially if there's going to be clipping around the face. Sasha doesn't need haircuts, but she's graciously offered to help demonstrate for cookie pay. Here are a couple tips to get started: 1 - always start blunt side first when introducing scissors or moving them closer for the first time 2 - give your dog something to focus on (here, Sasha's watching her next treat), so it's easier to learn how to stay still while the scissors move. Later, the food is faded out since you'll need 2 hands to clip.

Becka Open Wide

**sound on!** Here we are teaching Becka one of the more challenging cooperative care behaviors - to open her mouth up for an examination! You can see how important it is to build in wins for the dog as you work towards your goal behavior. Stay tuned to see her progress!
