“Urgent: Seeking the Right Home for Duke, a 7-Year-Old Great Dane
Duke is a 7-year-old Mantle Great Dane who needs a stable and experienced home. His previous owner, a military service member, relocated overseas and was unable to take him. We took him in and are trying to find him a forever home.
We want to be completely transparent about his needs and challenges so he can find a responsible and capable owner.
The Right Home for Duke:
● Adult-only home preferred (children 12+ may be considered with experience owners)
● Great Dane-savvy owner strongly preferred
● Best as an only dog or with a submissive, equal-sized female dog (slow introduction required, separate space while acclimating)
● No small animals or other pets
● Fenced yard required
● Experienced owner willing to continue training and establish fair, strong leadership
● Someone home regularly (not suitable for long hours alone)
● Quiet, structured household preferred
Personality & Behavior:
● Affectionate but needs boundaries – leans in for pets and butt rubs, but also needs
a clear leader to give direction
● Vocal communicator – various growls/whines to express needs, barks when excited, hungry,
or alerting
● Loves structure – thrives on a predictable schedule
● House-trained & crate-trained – no accidents, sleeps soundly at night
● Excellent on leash – a dream to walk, enjoys sniffing and exploring
● Protective tendencies – will bark/growl at strangers but warms up quickly
● Displays dominant behavior – needs an owner who understands "Nothing In Life is Free" training
● Has shown resource guarding tendencies – growled when a bed was removed, mouthy when medication was applied to a sore foot
● Not recommended for homes with young children – while he has not shown outright aggression, he is unsettled and grumpy in his current transition.
Health:
● Approximately 150 lbs
● Potential underlying medical conditions – possible laryngeal paralysis with related
neurological effects (unconfirmed) All bloodwork and urine tests are good.
● Allergies (food or environmental unknown) – on prescription diet, has ongoing hot spots and itchy paws
● Complete medical records available
Other Notes:
Duke was described by his former owner as "gentle, cautious, and well-trained," but we have
seen a different side of him in this transition period. He needs a firm but fair owner who can provide patience, structure, training, and positive reinforcement.
His ideal adopter will be knowledgeable about large-
breed behaviors and willing to work with him through any challenges.
We believe he deserves a chance with the right person. We are committed to finding that person.
If you are an experienced Great Dane owner who can provide Duke with the leadership and stability he needs, please reach out. Time is of the essence!
Serious inquiries only. We want the best possible home for Duke!
