PSA for chip bag suffocation!

Sadly, this heartbroken family lost their beautiful 7 year old Border Collie named Kindle on Wednesday when she suffocated in a chip bag. Wendy Jordan, a professional dog trainer, says, "I can’t write now. It’s too raw. I have warned people for years about Pet Suffocation. I’m a dog trainer/business owner by profession. And today, because I left a chip bag on a table, in an area I thought the dogs didn't have access to but knew they sometimes could get through, my best dog of my pack is gone. She opened the gate to the deck, went up the steps, got the chip bag, took it down the steps, even spilling some of the chips, and then somehow accessed the inside and suffocated. She was right beside my gate where she is used to entering and exiting the yard. I’m devastated. I may never buy a bag of chips again. I used to worry about this when my kids were young, and I warned my kids when they left home with their dogs, and yet one freak accident, and I’m the one it happens to."

Even though someone may already know about pet suffocation and take all safety precautions, accidents can still happen. We can only do our best. Kindle was a very determined pup. Her story will help save other pets from this happening to them. Please help us spread awareness. Thank you.

Teaching a dog to “settle” is a favorite of mine. It is a fantastic foundation piece for training and ultimately having a dog that can hang out in a variety of environments. For those of us that like to take our dogs places it is a true game changer!

Now that summer is in full swing, it’s important to make sure our pups are able to handle the heat. Especially dogs that are very young, senior citizens, dark colored, double coated, and/or a brachycephalic breed. Heat stroke and paw pad burns are common injuries seen when the temps go up. These are best avoided by planning outings and walks during the early or later hours of the day when the sun is lowest. And always remember water and a bowl for your pup! 🐶💦

Another of the many reasons we do not accept “board and train” clients and believe strongly in continued education. Belonging to an organization that expects members to continue learning and honing their craft gives an element of regulation that doesn’t exist legally.

Beware the self-proclaimed expert – especially those offering to board and train!

While I prefer to focus on the positives in my posts, occasionally something is brought to my attention which is too concerning to ignore. While dog training and behaviour modification remains an unregulated industry, sadly there will always be those who take advantage of the unsuspecting public and do untold harm to dogs and their people. Frighteningly, most of these experts are not deliberately deceiving the public – in fact they tend to have enormous faith in their abilities, and I honestly believe that many genuinely suffer from severe delusions of grandeur.

In the long run many of these “dog gurus” crash and burn as horror stories from their former clients spread throughout the dog community, but new ones unfortunately always pop up and by the time their popularity wanes, too many dogs have suffered irreparable harm. So, after hearing again this week of one of the most troublesome local “experts” partnering with an equally delusional individual to open a “board and train”, I felt I could no longer remain silent and needed to write a brief “warning” post which will hopefully give dog guardians some danger signs to look out for when seeking help:

1. Credible, qualified trainers do not need to boast about their popularity or status. If you come across an advertisement claiming NUMBER ONE BEHAVIOURIST IN SA, SA’s TOP DOG SPECIALIST or TOP AGGRESSION EXPERT, I can absolutely guarantee you that nothing could be further from the truth. Qualified, reputable trainers allow their credentials and their client history to speak for itself. They have no need to make grandiose claims and are not trying to impress anyone.

2. Reputable trainers and behaviour practitioners will have some form of qualification or certification and they will belong to some professional body, which requires them to hold to a code of conduct. INDIVIDUALS WITH NO EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND, THOSE WHO DALLIED BRIEFLY WITH STUDIES AND THEN DECIDED THEY KNEW BETTER AND THOSE WITH NO TIES TO ANY PROFESSIONAL BODY OR SOCIETY WHICH REQUIRES PROFESSIONALISM AND CERTAIN STANDARDS of practice are usually operating in isolation for a reason.

3. Credible, professional trainers and behaviour counsellors will be able to explain their approach to helping dogs and their people in terms of learning theory, emotionality, physiology and ethology. ANYONE WHO RELIES ON VAGUE NOTIONS OF LEADERSHIP, DOMINANCE, PACK THEORY OR “ENERGY” IS MAKING IT UP AS THEY GO ALONG and likely using punishment without even understanding what they are doing.

4. CREDIBLE DOG PROFESSIONALS NEVER GUARANTEE RESULTS – in fact you will often hear us say “it depends” …. Behaviour is complex and there are no quick fixes. Dogs are individuals and we have to move at their pace an accommodate their needs. We cannot simply “whip them into shape” with our brilliance or charisma.

5. DON’T MISTAKE GOOD MARKETING FOR EXPERTISE – many self-proclaimed experts are supremely confident (arrogant) and are happy to sell themselves shamelessly to the public. They may be very good at this side of things and easily convince people that they know what they are doing, simply due to presentation of advertisements etc. Just remember that you are hiring someone to help your dog, not market a product of yours!

Finally, to address the “Board and Train” issue – please remember that your dog is a family member and whatever is happening with them is in the context of your family, your home and your relationship with them. Removing the dog to a new environment away from everything they know is immediately going to change how they feel and how they behave. Behaviour and training issues need to be worked through holistically in the context of your dog’s life with you – a dog is not a computer who’s hard drive needs cleaning or an appliance with a button that needs fixing and which can be sent away for repairs. It really doesn’t work like that. Your relationship with your dog and how you fulfil their needs must be central to working through any behaviour issue and this won’t happen if you are not there.

Even more concerning is that in handing your dog over to someone else to “fix” you have absolutely no idea what may be done to your dog and what lasting consequences this could have on their emotional and behavioural health. If you are told your dog will go away for a night or two and come back transformed, what do you imagine might be happening during that time? I guarantee it is nothing good. You would surely not hand your toddler over to some “expert” for a couple of days to be “sorted out”, so PLEASE don’t do this to your dog!

It may feel intentional but I promise it’s not! Dogs weren’t born to spite us but show us a mirror 💙

If a dog is repeatedly not following a cue, it's important we don't decide they are being 'stubborn'. Dogs are not stubborn because they choose to be.

It may be that they haven't actually learned the cue properly.

They may be feeling unwell.

There may be distractions in the environment that mean they can't concentrate and respond to the cue.

The reward on offer might not be motivating enough for them in that moment.

Look at the environment for distractions, look at the coaching history to see if the cue has been fully established and proofed in the wider world, and look at the value of the rewards you are offering.

As a dog trainer with a toddler in the home, I am preaching to myself as well! Prevention starts with education. Any and all breeds are capable of biting under the right circumstances. Please don’t wait until it’s too late to establish boundaries and if you hear me say nothing else, DON’T PUNISH THE GROWL.

Don't forget to breathe. That's one of the first things that I tell my clients. Dogs communicate primarily through body language, so any changes, even small ones, WILL BE noticed by your dog.

The tensing of your shoulders, how tightly you're holding the leash, a change in your speed, etc. Your dog will notice these things, and, depending on the situation, may react in the exact OPPOSITE way that you want them to, because your body language is saying something different than your words or intentions.

If we want our dog to calm down, we must first show them what that looks like. So don't forget to start every training exercise and every interaction by breathing and relaxing your body, even if you don't think you're tense. ❤️💕

Parvo is rampant in our area! If your dog is showing any of these symptoms, please do NOT visit public locations like parks, pet friendly stores, etc. with your dog. It is also important to know that if your dog does become infected, it can continue to shed the virus for 6 months after recovery!

Please vaccinate your pups, it’s a minimal cost when treatment costs thousands. We owe it to our community to keep other’s pets safe!

Get your pets vaccinated! Here, there or please anywhere! Just make sure it's a legitimate vaccine!
We are here for the ones you love 276-694-3564 ❤️💙

Parvo, or canine parvovirus (CPV), is a highly contagious viral disease that affects the gastrointestinal tract and white blood cells of dogs and other canids. The virus is shed in the f***s of infected dogs, and dogs become infected by ingesting the virus. Parvo most often strikes in pups between six and 20 weeks old, but older animals are sometimes also affected.

Symptoms of CPV include:
Lethargy
Depression
Loss or lack of appetite
High fever
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Abdominal pain and bloating
Fever or low body temperature (hypothermia)

Early detection and treatment is key, and survival rates for parvo can be as high as 90% when given the right treatment in a timely fashion. While there is no specific drug to kill the virus, treatment can involve supportive care until a dog's immune system can fight off the infection.
Vaccination is effective at preventing Parvo, but even vaccinated dogs may occasionally be infected by Parvovirus and develop disease. The vaccine provides immunity against the virus, but it is not 100% effective.

It has come to our attention that there is another dog trainer in the area making false accusations about our business. While we will not be giving that individual a platform, we would like to let our clients know we are committed to them and their dogs despite an apparent lack of support from some individuals.

Though it is certainly disappointing, it’s not surprising when said person’s social media is riddled with putting others “on blast”. Our trainer doesn’t have time to be a keyboard warrior and would rather put effort into creating a healthy environment for our local dog community.

We are a business that promotes collaboration, not competition. We are happy to work with and refer to other mature, professional individuals in the dog industry.

If you have any questions about our trainer’s experience, methods, etc. please ask! Our dogs and our clients dog’s’ behavior will speak for us as well!

In the meantime, we’ll be out enjoying the spring weather and training dogs 🐶 ☀️🌱

Shake it…shake it off…

A recent study by two researchers in France looked at sniffing, pulse rate, and leash length on walks. Sixty-one dogs were taken on three separate walks, five minutes each walk, once with a 1.5m leash, once with a 5m leash, and once without a leash at all (walk order was randomized for each dog). Off-leash dogs sniffed the most, more than 3x as long as the dogs on short leashes. Dogs on long leashes spent nearly as much time as unleashed dogs sniffing, almost 3x as long as dogs on short leashes.

This study also found that sniffing resulted in lowered pulse rates, and the more intensely they sniffed, the more their pulse rates lowered. Pulse rate was also lowered when dogs “shook off” during walks on all leash lengths. The “shake off” behavior was often seen when the dog’s pulse rate was particularly high.

Is your dog the friendly, outgoing type or more reserved and maybe timid around new people?

This is one of my personal dogs at an event in NYC where 50,000 people were in attendance over a two day period. While this should never be expected of most dogs, it is possible with training and intentional exposure.

Whether your dog is a little too bubbly or more shy than you would like, we can achieve neutral and pleasant interactions together!

I will always encourage potential buyers and adopters to read up on the breed they are interested in. Please do not get a dog based solely on looks. Genetics are incredibly powerful and every breed has specific behaviors and needs.

Meet Sue, a dog pulled from Henry County Animal Shelter and adopted through Martinsville Henry County SPCA Even at 4, she can still learn new tricks!
