Let’s talk about your relationship with DG (Dirty Girl). “She is a new ride for me and is coming off of a four-month break. She is one of the good horses of my mentor – head rider at Eye Candy, Paul O’Shea. He's traveling right now with his other horses, so I got to ride her during these couple of classes. She has won two of the three and jumped every round clean. She's a special horse.” What do you think creates that drive for her? “She's a very intense mare. You could easily mistake it for her being naughty, but she's just very intense and strong minded. If you channel it, and you're good to her, she comes through. She's such a fighter and so experienced. So, I think you just kind of give her sugar, a pat on the neck and try and stay out of her way. I love those mares, you know. The stallions, too. You may get a little bit more personality with it, but everything they do makes sense. Especially with the mares, and what’s important is that they’re always fighting for you. She may be petite, but she’s an absolute beast. She’ll jump all day for you.” How are you ensuring your horse’s best health and happiness? “Nutrition is extremely important. And then as far as the health, it's in our everyday work. You're kind of their personal trainer, and they can't speak. You have to be really thoughtful about what you're doing with them every day – preventing stress, ensuring they’re not too hot, keeping them happy in the work. Some days you do a little more, some days you do a little less. You keep them happy."
