"On Columbus' South Side is a veterinary care center like no other.

The Essential Care Center offers low-cost veterinary care, a pet food pantry and classes to help develop the future veterinary workforce. It's the only center of its kind in the United States, as it combines those three services.

The center, made possible by a $6 million campaign, opened in June to select customers as it tested out its processes but is now officially open to the public.

At 3772 S. High St., the center is open 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and closed on weekends. Appointments are required and can be made online at www.columbushumane.org/essential." The Columbus Dispatch

💡Think Brave, Train Better with Susan Friedman 🐾

The world of animal training can sometimes seem like navigating through an ocean of endless information, a myriad of ideas, and a plethora of 'expert' opinions. In these overwhelming times, it's essential to be a brave learner and a critical thinker, constantly evaluating the impact of new knowledge on your work.

Recently, our Animal Training Academy (ATA) membership had the honour of welcoming Dr. Susan Friedman. Her wisdom on nurturing bravery in learning and honing critical thinking skills was an inspiration. With her insights, our members found the courage to challenge traditional norms and modify their strategies based on observed results.

As a part of fostering a brave learning mindset, Dr. Friedman encourages:

1️⃣ Question Everything: Probe into the 'why' behind new pieces of information.
2️⃣ Embrace Different Perspectives: Broaden your understanding by considering different viewpoints.
3️⃣ Reflect on Your Decisions: Analyze what worked and what didn't, and use these insights to make informed future decisions.

Intrigued to learn more from Dr. Friedman? Dive into her insights with this recent free ATA podcast episode ➡️ https://atamember.com/2023/05/08/function-assessments/

The Animal Training Academy stands firm on the foundation of brave learning. Our mission is to replace your stress and uncertainty with newfound confidence and skills. Ready to brave the waves of knowledge and confront all your animal-related challenges? Join us in our learning journey!

Water poisoning

On hot days many of us like to do water activities with our dogs. This way our 4-legged friends get attention and they can cool down.

But... we have to be careful with those water activities.

Sometimes dogs swallow so much water during their water playtime that it causes water poisoning.

Water poisoning is a serious and sometimes fatal condition!

If the dog swallows more water than his body can process, his blood and other body fluids get so thin that the salt balance gets disturbed.

Signals of water poisoning are for example:
- walk unsteadily
- violent vomiting
- bloated belly
- pale mucous membranes
- weakness/lethargy
- heavy drooling
- dilated pupils
- some dogs even get seizures

So be a wise owner and watch your dog and make sure he doesn't swallow lots of water while having fun in the water.

Do you recognize one of the above signs? Don't hesitate and contact your vet!

Don’t use leash jerks, and if your dog pulls on leash, walk them on a harness, as research shows the potential pressure applied to a dog’s neck by the use of a flat collar.

We are discussing expanding our business to include MOBILE GROOMING! This would include full groom services (bath, blow dry, nail trim, ear clean, all over haircut, along with additional services).
Is this something Unioun County residents would be interested in?
How much would you be willing to pay for this full service?
