How to Build a Winter Shelter for Outdoor Cats

Providing a warm, safe shelter for outdoor cats during winter is simple and inexpensive. Here are key tips to keep in mind when constructing your shelter:

1. Design

Use strong insulation to trap body heat; cats become little radiators!
Use straw (not hay or blankets) as bedding. Straw stays dry and provides warmth.
A smaller interior area retains heat better than a large one.
2. Size

Small shelters heat up faster and stay warm with just one or two cats inside.
Two smaller shelters are better than one large one.
3. Location

If dogs are a threat, place the shelter behind a fence where dogs can’t reach it.
Face the entrance toward a wall to ensure only cats can access it.
Keep shelters and feeding stations out of sight for added safety.
4. Elevate the Shelter

Raise the shelter off the ground using 2x4s or other materials.
Place straw underneath for added insulation.
5. Small Door

Cats only need an entrance about 5.5–6 inches wide (or the width of their whiskers).
A small door helps retain heat and keeps larger animals like raccoons out.
6. Prevent Dampness

Tilt the shelter slightly so rainwater drains off the roof and doesn’t pool inside.
Drill a small hole in the bottom or side for drainage.
7. Secure the Shelter

Add heavy rocks, bricks, or pavers on top to keep it in place.
Place two shelters facing each other with a board on top to create a protected entryway.
8. Insulation Matters

Use materials cats can burrow into, like straw.
Avoid blankets, towels, or newspapers as they retain moisture and can make the shelter cold.
A little effort can make a big difference in keeping outdoor cats safe and warm during the winter months. Let’s protect our feline friends! 🐾

🐾 BCAC Needs Fosters Now More Than Ever! 🐾

Right now, BCAC is housing 35 animals from a heartbreaking cruelty case. While these animals cannot be fostered out at this time, we urgently need to make space by finding fosters for our other adoptable pets.

Fostering is absolutely crucial to what we do. It provides pets with the comfort and stability of a home environment while freeing up valuable space in the shelter to care for animals in need. By opening your heart and home to a foster pet, you’re not just helping one animalβ€”you’re helping us save more lives.

❀️ Why Fostering Matters:

Gives animals the chance to thrive in a home setting.
Provides valuable insights into a pet’s personality, helping us match them with their perfect forever home.
Creates space at BCAC for urgent cases, like the animals from this cruelty situation.
Makes a direct, life-changing impact on animals in need.
Whether you can foster for a few days, a few weeks, or longer, your help is desperately needed. We have dogs, cats, puppies, and kittensβ€”all waiting for a temporary haven until their forever families find them.

πŸ“ž Ready to help? Contact us at (865) 980-6244 to learn more about fostering.
Every foster makes a difference. Let’s work together to give these animals the second chance they deserve.

❄️ Winter Weather Walks: Stay Safe! ❄️

When walking your pet in winter weather, remember:
🐾 Protect their paws with booties or pet-safe balm.
🐾 Shorten walks in freezing temps.
🐾 Wipe their paws after walks to remove ice, salt, and chemicals.

Keep your furry friend warm, safe, and happy this winter! πŸ•β€οΈ

This week, we said goodbye to sweet Sadie, an 18-year-old small mix breed who passed away after spending her final days in comfort and love through our hospice program. Surrendered to BCAC when her owner faced significant health challenges, Sadie had a second chance to feel cherished and cared for, thanks to this invaluable program.

Despite her health strugglesβ€”chronic kidney disease, cardiac issues, arthritis, and severe dental diseaseβ€”Sadie was able to live her last moments surrounded by warmth, love, and kindness. Her foster family provided her with the peace and dignity every animal deserves.

Our hospice fosters are a lifeline for pets like Sadie, offering them a chance to live out their remaining days free from pain and surrounded by compassion. This service is crucial for animals who might otherwise face uncertain futures in shelters.

πŸ’– You Can Make a Difference πŸ’–
If you’re interested in becoming a hospice foster, please contact BCAC. Your home could be a haven for an animal in need, providing them with love and care during their final chapter.

🐾 Can’t foster? Please consider donating this $5 Friday to support our hospice program. Your contributions allow us to provide medical care, specialized food, and supplies for these animals.

Together, we can ensure that every pet, regardless of their circumstances, experiences the love they deserve. ❀️

🚨 🐾 URGENT: HANK NEEDS A HOME! 🐾 🚨

Hank, our long-term resident and Tim Ivens Sponsored Dog, has been at Blount County Animal Center for far too long, and it’s starting to wear on him. This incredible two-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier mix has spent most of 2024 waitingβ€”patiently, lovingly, and oh-so-hopefullyβ€”for his forever family to walk through our doors.

πŸ• Hank is struggling with shelter life, and he deserves so much more.

With his expressive eyebrows and soulful eyes, Hank’s face tells a story of resilience, hope, and love. He’s a snuggle pro who loves flopping into your lap for belly rubs, thrives on companionship, and is happiest by your side. He’s leash-trained, knows his commands, and has an eagerness to please that melts hearts.

πŸ’” Shelter life is hard on dogs, especially ones like Hank who have been waiting for so long. He’s a playful boy with so much love to give, but he’s starting to lose hope.

Thanks to Tim Ivens Real Estate, Hank’s adoption fee is fully coveredβ€”all he needs now is YOU.

🏑 If you can’t adopt, please SHARE this post. Every share could be the one that helps Hank find his person.

πŸ“ž Call (865) 980-6244 to schedule a meet-and-greet (required if you have other dogs).

Let’s make sure Hank’s story ends with a warm bed, a loving family, and the forever home he deserves.
