Here are some tips to keep in mind this Halloween!

- Chocolate and xylitol, a sugar substitute, ate both poisonous to pets. Make sure your candy is in a safe place away from pets.

- Make sure your pets are secure and can’t run out the door while you are passing out candy. If your cat goes outside we recommend keeping him or her inside on Halloween night due to increased traffic in neighborhoods.

- Excited pets can knock over decorations. Make sure your jack-o-lanterns are out of reach! Cat owners especially may want to consider using LED lights as opposed to candles in their decorations.

- Make sure your pets’ microchips and ID tags have current information.

What other tips do you have for pet owners on Halloween?

It is Wild Turtle Week!

Wild Turtle Week is May 23-27. It is a collaborative initiative between the Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC), and the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) to celebrate all things related to turtles for one week.

Every turtle counts. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with partners to support turtle conservation. There are ways you can help, too, including by reporting wildlife crimes.

Do you know the difference between service dogs and emotional support dogs (ESA)? Both types of dogs have an important role in their human’s lives.

Service dogs are covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), are individually trained to help with their owner’s specific disability, and are allowed in all public spaces.

ESAs are prescribed to a person by a licensed mental health professional. They are companions whose presence has been determined to support their owner’s well-being and improve his or her quality of life. They are not covered under ADA and therefore are not automatically granted access to public spaces. However, under the Fair Housing Act, ESAs are allowed to live in homes that may otherwise have a “no pet” policy.

We appreciate all of the hard work both types of dogs do!

In September, we honor service dogs! According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, a service dog is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. They are allowed to accompany people with disabilities anywhere the public is allowed to go.

Service dogs may guide people who are blind, pull a wheelchair, alert and protect a person who is having a seizure, calm a person with PTSD, and more. These dogs work hard!

Ginger-colored cats are very popular! Celebrity cats such as Milo, Garfield, Orangey, Orion, and Puss and Boots are all ginger cats.

A common myth is that ginger cats are always male, but Pumpkin II (pictured) is actually a female cat! Female ginger cats are rare, but they do exist!

Do you have a ginger cat? We would love to see pictures of him or her!

Another vaccine we recommend for your dog is the leptospirosis vaccine. Lepto is a bacteria that can affect both humans and animals. It is spread through urine and can survive for weeks or months in water and soil.

In pets, lepto can cause vomiting, diarrhea, fever, pain, and more. It is treatable and the vaccine makes the symptoms much more manageable.

Dogs that go outside and are around stagnant water such as puddles, ponds, or areas that frequently flood are highly recommended to receive the lepto vaccine. While cats can also contract lepto, there is currently no vaccine against it available.

08/25/2021

The feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is one of the leading causes of death in cats. It suppresses the immune system and causes cats to struggle to fight off infections and other diseases.

The virus does not live long outside of the host, and is transmitted primarily through saliva. Cats that go outside have the highest risk of contracting the FeLV because of the potential to interact with unvaccinated cats through fighting and grooming.

Kittens that test negative for feline leukemia and all cats that go outside are recommended to get the feline leukemia vaccine.

If you visited Maryville Animal Hospital in the early 2000s, you may have met Gwen at the front desk - especially during the summer!

Gwen was found by one of our clients in 2001. She had been abandoned and someone had sprayed chemicals in her eyes, permanently blinding her. Gwen was adopted by one of our veterinarians and would come to work with him some days. Despite her blindness, Gwen lived a full, healthy life. She loved (and licked) everyone she met!

Some dogs are born blind, some dogs become blind with old age, some dogs are blinded by illness, and unfortunately some dogs are made blind by abuse. All blind dogs can live happy and healthy lives like Gwen. They can be trained, play games, navigate stairs and furniture, and more!

If you have any questions about blind dogs or need to schedule an appointment, please call us at 865-681-0456.

The DA2PP vaccine protects your dog from 5 different diseases.

The distemper virus is a potentially deadly disease that attacks your dog’s respiratory, urogenital, gastrointestinal, and nervous system. Advanced cases can cause pneumonia, seizures, and paralysis. Even if a dog is successfully treated for distemper, it can still result in permanent brain damage.

The second virus addressed by the DA2PP vaccine is the canine adenovirus which includes canine hepatitis and kennel cough. Canine hepatitis attacks the liver and can cause long-lasting damage. Kennel cough is a highly contagious upper respiratory virus that results in high fever and coughing.

Canine parainfluenza can also cause kennel cough. It is also highly contagious and spreads very quickly.

The canine parvovirus is a very deadly virus that is mostly commonly found in puppies (although dogs of any age can contract it). Parvo is also highly contagious and causes vomiting and diarrhea. Parvo can live outside of a host for up to one year and is resistant to many forms of disinfectant.

If you have any questions about the DA2PP vaccine or would like to make an appointment, please call us at 865-681-0456!

08/12/2021

The FVRCP vaccines is one of the core vaccines recommended for your cats. This vaccine protects your cat from three serious diseases.

The first disease is feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR) which is also known as the feline herpesvirus. It is an upper respiratory infection of the nose and throat that can cause more serious issues such as pneumonia.

The second disease is the feline calicivirus. Like FVR, it attacks the upper respiratory system, but it can also harm the intestines and the musculoskeletal system. It can cause the soft tissues in your cat’s mouth to become irritated and inflamed which prevents them from eating. Like FVR, it can also cause your cat to develop pneumonia, which requires hospitalization and can be fatal.

The final disease the FVRCP vaccine protects against is feline panleukopenia. This disease has a high mortality rate because it can attack your cat’s bone marrow and lymph nodes. This leads to a very low white blood cell count which will prevent your cat from being able to fight off other infections.

All three diseases are highly contagious, which is another reason why the FVRCP vaccine is so important. Not only are they spread through body fluids, but FPV can also be spread through exposure to something previously contaminated with the virus.

If you have any questions about the vaccine or need to schedule an appointment, please call us at 865-681-0456!

08/04/2021

The rabies virus is a deadly virus that attacks the nervous system of mammals. It can be transmitted to humans and can be deadly.

Rabies is a fragile virus that lives in saliva and the nervous system. Because it is a fragile virus, it does not survive outside its host. Therefore, rabies can be transmitted through bite wounds, but not from a rabid animal eating from the same dish as your pet.

The rabies vaccine is made from a killed virus, not a live virus, so your pet cannot contract rabies from the vaccine. TN State law requires that cats and dogs 6 months or older must be currently vaccinated against rabies.

We currently offer two rabies vaccines: one that needs to be administered yearly and another that is good for 3 years.

To read more about the rabies virus and vaccine, visit avma.org/resources/public-health/rabies-and-your-pet

If you have questions about the rabies vaccine or need to schedule and appointment, call us at 865-681-0456.
