Chemistry panels help assess your cat's health along with other routine wellness exams. They're best known for evaluating how healthy organs such as the liver, kidneys, and pancreas function. Early signs of liver and kidney disease and diabetes can be detected through this test. A urine sample is also recommended for a thorough check to get a complete picture of your cat's health. Have you scheduled your pet's routine wellness exam? Contact us at (517) 676-5422.

Avian influenza (bird flu) has been a topic of concern on social media lately, particularly about how it can affect our pets. Below is an excerpt from a brief article published by the American Veterinary Medical Association, with a link to the full body of text. If you have questions, or are concerned about your pets, please call or email us, and we'll do our best to help!

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild (e.g., mountain lions, tigers, leopards, and bobcats). Cats were already known to be susceptible to the H5N1 virus, with several feline cases linked to poultry or wild bird exposure before the cattle outbreak began.

Cats appear to be particularly susceptible to severe illness, often resulting in death. The good news is that infection can be prevented with a few simple practices.

What should cat owners do if H5N1 is suspected?

To play it safe, cat owners should:

Call their veterinary clinic—before taking cats in to be seen—and describe any clinical signs they have noticed so that the veterinary team can be ready when the patient arrives.

Limit their cat’s contact with immunocompromised individuals if any exposure to the virus is possible.

Protect themselves and others from influenza by following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Monitor their family and other animals that might have been exposed for signs of illness, and report any human illness to their local public health official.

When it comes to heart health, an echocardiogram is one of the most effective diagnostic tools for assessing your dog's heart condition. This non-invasive procedure takes about 20-30 minutes to complete and generally doesn't require shaving their fur, though a small patch may be shaved in some cases. The echocardiogram provides real-time images of the heart, allowing us to evaluate its size, condition, and pumping efficiency and identify any abnormalities. Contact us at (517) 676-5422!

Puppies start teething anywhere between 3-4 months old and can last until the age of 6 to 7 months. You’ll notice an increase in biting and nipping as your puppy loses more baby teeth and adult teeth start to grow in. Most pups decrease their mouthing and biting by the time they are 8 to 10 months old, depending on the breed. To ensure this doesn’t turn into a lifelong bad habit, follow these helpful tips to stop puppy biting. Do you have questions about how to care for your pup? Give us a call at (517) 676-5422 and we can provide you with more personalized care. 🐶

Like us, it is best to brush your dog's teeth at least twice every day. For many dogs, once brushing becomes a part of their daily routine, they will begin to expect and enjoy it. Brushing three times a week is the minimum recommendation to help remove plaque and prevent tartar accumulation.
