GREAT NEWS.... West Virginia Horse Network, Inc. is now on Benevity. If you work for an employer who is part of this program please search for "West Virginia Horse Network" and support our charity.

Thanks to adopter Nicole D. for pushing us to do this so that her donations can be matched by her employer.

We've also set up a way for donation through this platform to go directly to our "STAI: Solutions to Avoid Intake" program that has been so successful in allowing us to keep horses in their homes without needing to come into our rescue. Through STAI we have been able to help and support nearly double the number of horses that we would be otherwise!

MEET CHARLIE...he became a gelding today. He came to us a few weeks ago. We didn't know he was a stud when we agreed to take him, so his castration today was a cost we hadn't necessarily planned for. It had to be done though, of course. By the time he got all his vaccinations, a Coggins pulled, a lot of sedation and also the castration....his bill alone was $745.

Becca, Obie, P***y all had their teeth floated and booster shots.

Stewart and Juni got their booster shots.

In total our bill today was $2,344.54.

That is a major ouch for our small rescue.

Our two most recent fundraisers (Hayghetti and the Fun Show/Clinic) weren't as profitable as we needed them to be.

Meanwhile there is a long list of horses waiting that need us. We won't take in any horse that we can't give 100% to. So that unfortunately means pumping the brakes for a bit. With some adoptions coming up, we will be below our normal "capacity"...but higher bills combined with lower donations means our "capacity" is going to have to be lower.

If you have room in your budget to donate...please consider donating toward this tremendous vet bill.

June 1st we will be paying out money for board on some of our horses that are in training. In total that'll be around $1,500.

Horse rescue is expensive. To keep saying yes, we need the consistent help of donors.

It is vital.

Please donate as much as you are able, if you are able.

Today at lunch the thoughts tumbling around in my head were of training a horse and all the differing opinions and conversations I 've been a part of or heard. Some include: Who's your favorite clinician? What method do you follow? I like so & so, they can really ride, I don't like ____ because they ruined my horse, duh duh dutta duh and the list goes on.... There are many training methods available to choose from out there today. There are lots of Clinicians to choose from and there are lots of good horseman both male and female that we've never heard of that are out there doing a great job. And yes, there are also ones out there causing more harm than good but, in the horse world word gets around about it.
At the end of the day I think the horse will let you know what works for them. I don't think a person should get tunnel vision about a particular "method" because at some point, there is always going to be a horse that it isn't going to work for.
When I approach a horse I haven't worked with I try to just get a feel for it...I like to see what its eye is saying to me, what its body is telling me,and what energy I feel from it. I want to look at it as an individual without hearing any bad history so I don't have any preconceived notions about it. I don't worry about a program or a method...I look at the horse and I go with my gut. That may sound crazy to some but, if I go with my gut, it usually works and I am able to communicate with the horse and start from where they're at. The horse will show me what they need and what works for them, I just listen.
Listening to them is the most important part.
I have studied various books and training methods and took in lots of clinics and I'm not saying those haven't been a benefit because they have but, at the end of the day, listening to the horse in front of me and going with my gut has served me well. It is always where I start.

Winnie would love to have a forever home.

MAY is ADOPT-A-HORSE MONTH -- we are interrupting Winnie's dinner to highlight her "Horse Power"...which is being absolutely GORGEOUS!

Winnie wore a saddle yesterday for the first time since coming to the rescue. She's also really been enjoying pasture time!

To learn more about Winnie and to see more photos click here to view her profile: https://www.myrighthorse.org/available-horses/mare-arabian-from-elkview-winnie

Winnie is currently fostered in Mason County, WV.

If you think you may be interested in adopting Winnie, we'd love to talk to you.

MAY IS NATIONAL ADOPT A PET MONTH
This is Winnie. I am fostering her for the WeWest Virginia Horse Network, Inc. She came to me in March underweight, suffering from ulcers and lacking energy and self-confidence.
Yesterday, she completed 11 out of 14 Basic Behaviors Profile (more detail in the link). We are unaware of her riding status so we tried putting a saddle on her. This appeared to be all new with her but with slow and gradual introduction, she did quite well for her first try. She is girthy on the right side.
If you are interested in starting a horse, Winnie is your girl. She is willing to try when given the time to think it through.
Winnie is also a good candidate for a pasture mate. She does well on my rolling hills and gets along with my geldings, mare, and mini.
Check out Winnie in the link below.

WINNIE does excellent in a herd setting and gets along just fine with the other horses at her foster home. Winnie is sound. But we have not assessed her undersaddle yet because we were waiting for her to get to a healthy weight. She is looking great now and is getting ready to transition to a traini...

JUNI came to West Virginia Horse Network yesterday as an owner surrender. She is a yearling.

Juni will see our vet tomorrow to determine why she isn't thriving. We anticipate she will need bloodwork, which is necessary but expensive...as well as other testing.

Please consider a donation on Juni's behalf.

Our expenses right now are at an all time high. Donations are down. The number of horses needing help is endless. Your support allows us to say "yes" in times of need.

MAY IS ADOPT-A-HORSE month! Throughout the next several weeks we'll be shining a spotlight on all of our awesome adoptable horses! We will also be helping you get to know our incredible network of fosters! Without them we wouldn't be able to do a fraction of the good we do.
We are leading off with Marie Gravely at FearNot Stables! She is currently fostering Winnie!
Marie's niche for the rescue has been helping horses who have ongoing health concerns that need careful management, helping horses overcome ulcers and helping horses gain that last little bit of weight before they start training or find an adopter.

SAKARA, JIMMY LLOYD and BOURBON all had farrier visits this week. We'd love to get donations to help offset this expense.

It is easy to forget how much care and maintenance costs while our "long-timers" wait to find adopters.

NOELLE will be making the trip to Columbus, OH with us for Equine Affaire, Inc. (Official) if she isn't adopted before then. We hope that you will come by the adoption barn at Equine Affaire and meet our adoptable horses as well as horses available for adoption through other ASPCA Right Horse partners.

Noelle is a senior pony who really enjoys children. Her body language is entirely different with children than with adult handlers. Not to say she doesn't like adults...she just really prefers to be led around by kids.

To read more about Noelle and see more pictures of her, check out her profile. You can also submit an adoption inquiry at this link.
https://www.myrighthorse.org/available-horses/mare-pony-from-elkview-noelle

Keep in mind...you CAN adopt Noelle before Equine Affaire. That will open up her stall for us to take another adoptable horse. If you have your eye on Noelle and want to meet and potentially adopt her AT Equine Affaire we encourage you to go ahead and submit an Adoption Inquiry so that you can get pre-approved to adopt!

FearNot Stables

FearNot Stables is a haven for fearful riders. I have been a fearful rider since my riding accident in 2011. It has been a long ride back to feeling comfortable in the saddle. I have learned conquering fear takes the support of family, friends, and horse professionals. FearNot Stables is just one support tool of your journey.

This facility provides a safe and supportive environment for all riders. We are not a fancy place but promote the best care to meet each horse’s and individual’s needs.

I look forward to working with you on your journey back to enjoying the presence of a horse in your life.
