Our friends at the Capital Area Humane Society have shared an important message about scammers falsely claiming to represent their organization. Please take a moment to read their post and stay informed.

We’ve been made aware of scammers contacting people claiming to represent the Capital Area Humane Society. These individuals are falsely stating that we have their pet in "urgent care" and requesting credit card information over the phone.

⚠️ Please note:

--The Capital Area Humane Society does NOT operate an urgent care.
--We will NEVER ask for your credit card information over the phone in this way.

If you receive such a call, do not provide any personal or financial information. Hang up immediately and report the incident to local law enforcement.

Your safety and the safety of our community are our top priorities. Please share this message to help spread awareness!

Meet Durian, our big, beefy 90-pound lovebug! 🐾🍈 This knucklehead came to us from another shelter with an eye injury that needed surgery, and while he may lose his sight in that eye, he hasn’t lost his gentle giant charm. 💕

Durian is looking for a family who can give him a comfy place to recover and all the snacks he could dream of (his love language is definitely treats). 🍖 He’s been a rockstar in playgroup, showing off his playful side and his ability to take corrections like a champ.

While he’s a little grumbly about medical care due to past experiences, he’s all bark and no bite—it’s just his way of saying, “Are we done yet?” With some patience (and lots of treats), he’ll warm right up to the vet visits. 🐕💉

❄️ Cold Weather Tips for Pets ❄️
As temperatures drop, here’s how you can help keep pets safe and comfortable:

🐾 Bring Pets Inside
Whenever possible, keep pets indoors. Even setting them up in a bathroom or laundry room can make a huge difference.

🐾 Outdoor Pet Care
If pets must stay outside, ensure they have:
•A draft-free shelter with plenty of straw for insulation.
•Access to fresh, unfrozen water—use a heated bowl or replace water often.
•Extra food to keep up with the calories they burn staying warm.

🐾 Car Safety
Cats and small animals may seek warmth in car engines. Always bang on your car’s hood before starting it to avoid injuries.

🐾 Paw Care
Use pet-safe de-icing salt and clean pets' paws after walks to prevent irritation from chemicals.

🐾 Indoor Enrichment
For pets staying inside, try food puzzles or enrichment toys to keep them mentally stimulated and prevent boredom.

Meet Fig, the sweetest pittie with a heart as lovely as her name! 🍑 This gentle girl spent the week in a foster home, and here’s what her foster family had to say about her:

✨ Shy but Sweet: Fig may be a little timid at first, but once she feels safe, her playful and affectionate side shines through.

✨ Doggy & Human Approved: She loves spending time with her doggy friends and human companions alike. Fig met her foster family’s grandchildren (ages 7 and 11) and, after a slow introduction, did great with them!

✨ A Great Houseguest: Fig wasn’t crated during her stay and was left alone at home for 2-3 hours at a time—her foster family called her perfect!

✨ Adventurous Spirit: She loves car rides and going on walks.

🚨 Important Note: Fig has a strong prey drive, so she’ll need a home without cats or small animals.

🐾 Happy ! 🐾

We have a heartwarming update to share about Hot Toddy, now known as Charlie! 🐶 He was adopted from ICACS in November, and his new family has been so kind to share some photos and an update with us.

"Charlie has adjusted to life at our home quite well. He has taken to my wife and waits patiently for her to get home every night. He has learned quite a few new commands and is very intelligent. He's getting along well with Ginger (they’re a pack now), and he loves to greet everyone that comes to the house. He has developed a taste for pancakes, apples, and carrots—and if he could get all three at the same time, he would think he's in heaven!"

We're so happy to hear how well Charlie is doing and so grateful that he's found such a wonderful family! 🧡

🐾 Sniff-tacular Adventures with Wooper! 🐾

Yesterday, one of our amazing volunteers took Wooper on a Sniffari—a fun field trip to explore and sniff his heart out—and he truly put the SNIFF in Sniffari! Wooper loved sniffing around bushes and shrubbery, showing off his sweet, curious personality. 🐶💚 While he’s not a fan of cold pavement, take him to a trail or yard with plenty of greenery, and he’s in his element!

Wooper is a gentle older beagle/spaniel mix who’s looking for a quiet home where he can enjoy long, sniffy walks and a big backyard to explore. He’s lived with cats and another dog before, though he’d prefer a laid-back canine friend if he’s not the only pet.

Sadly, Wooper is heartworm positive again (or still), but we’re treating him, and he’d love to recover in a loving home. It’s so important for his future family to keep him up-to-date on his monthly heartworm prevention to ensure he stays healthy.

Update: The owner has been found and they will be picking up Toaster on Saturday!

📣 Stray Alert: Help Us Find Toaster’s Family!

This unusual “dog” was dropped off at our shelter and is now safe in a kennel while we search for her owner. 🐾

🐶 Name: Toaster
🍞 Breed: Toast Retriever
⚖️ Weight: Approximately 5 lbs
🛑 Behavior: Doesn’t bark, loves popping up unexpectedly, seems to enjoy hanging out near the kitchen, and appears to be fine around other dogs.

We’re holding Toaster for a 4-day stray hold, as per policy, before considering adoption options. If this is your beloved “pet,” please bring proof of ownership (e.g., purchase receipt) when you come to reclaim her.

📅 Toaster’s owner has until Saturday to pick her up, or she may be available for adoption as part of our Breakfast Club! 🥞
