Spotted horses have existed for millennia. Ancient cave drawings depict horses with leopard-like coat patterns. When Cortez brought horses to Mexico, it is known that some of them were spotted. French royalty during the 17th and 18th century highly prized the leopard spots and the pattern became a status symbol in Western Europe.

Sometime around the 1730's the Nez Perce tribe acquired spotted horses from the Shoshone. The Nez Perce, who lived in the Pacific North West, had very selective breeding program, which was unusual at the time. Explorers Lewis and Clark noted the speed and unique coat patterns of the tribe's horses in their journals.

The breed likely derived the name it is known by today from the Palouse region where the Nez Perce tribe dwelt.

In 1975, the Appaloosa was named Idaho's state horse.
