🎉 December Volunteer Spotlight: Kevin!

Meet Kevin, one of our dedicated dog walkers who volunteers with us every week! His passion for animals and commitment to our mission shine through in everything he does. Here’s what Kevin shared about his volunteer journey:

"I’ve been volunteering at the Toledo Humane Society for almost two years — starting exactly one year after adopting my dog Bailey from THS (Bailey is the brindle dog in the picture). My other dog, Aesop, was adopted from Planned Pethood.

After retiring, volunteering at THS was at the top of my list because of my love for animals, especially dogs. As I got more involved, I saw the dedication of the volunteers and staff, which inspired me to deepen my commitment to this incredible organization.

One thing I’ve noticed while volunteering is the resilience of these dogs. Despite facing difficult and sometimes heartbreaking pasts, they still have so much love to give. For some, THS is the safest and most caring place they’ve ever known. Watching them find forever homes is a special feeling that’s hard to describe but makes all the work so rewarding.”

Thank you, Kevin, for your compassion, dedication, and the love you give to every dog you meet. We’re so grateful to have you as part of the THS family! 🐾💜

Sweet, shy, and ready for a fresh start—Ge**er is looking for her furrever home! This lovely girl was found in a vacant house by our cruelty department and has been on a journey of learning to trust and love again.

Meet Luna!

Luna is a loving 4-year-old kitty who found her way to THS after her owner’s health declined, leaving them unable to care for her. Despite the changes in her life, Luna has remained a total sweetheart!

This gentle girl adores tasty treats and cozy napping spots. She’s currently residing in Cat Room 1 at THS, where she gets along well with the other cats—so long as they respect her personal space.

🌟 December Staff Spotlight: Meet Our Amazing Shelter Manager, Erika Cook! 🌟

For the past 9 years, Erika has been the heart and soul of our shelter, leading with compassion, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to both animals and her team. Known for her warm spirit and quick sense of humor, she’s affectionately called “Mom” by her staff—a testament to how much she genuinely cares about them.

Erika’s love for animals has been her lifelong calling, and her dedication shines through every day. When she’s not busy managing the shelter, you can find her embracing her love for all things Disney or spending quality time with her two children, husband, and beloved dogs.

Her personal mantra, “Someone once wanted to be exactly where you are, and it could always be worse, so be appreciative of what life has given you,” reflects the positive, resilient attitude she brings to her work.

We’re so grateful for Erika’s leadership, compassion, and the light she brings to both our team and the animals we serve. Thank you, Erika, for making THS a place full of hope, care, and second chances! 💙🐾

Let us tell you about our friend, Mr. Cat ☺️

This sweet, lovable guy came to THS after being found as a stray in the woods behind his finder’s home. From the moment he arrived, Mr. Cat has won over everyone he meets with his affectionate nature. He adores chin scratches, pets, and long, cozy naps!

You might notice something special about Mr. Cat — he has a slight head tilt that sometimes makes him walk sideways. We think it adds to his charm and makes him even more adorable!

Mr. Cat is FIV+ (feline immunodeficiency virus), which affects his immune system. However, FIV+ cats can live happy, healthy lives with proper care. Regular monitoring for infections and dental health is key. To learn more about FIV+ cats, visit bestfriends.org.
