The Importance of Pilina
"They might not remember what you taught them, but they will remember how you made them feel,” Dean Wilhelm Executive Co-Director
At Hoʻokuaʻāina we seek to build relationship first. Once pilina is established, the learning naturally occurs. Mahalo to all of you who have supported our ʻāina based education programs. Your generous donations help us to continue to provide opportunities for our youth to make important connections to themselves, one another, and to the land that is nurtured by their care. Visit our website for more information or to schedule a visit.
This video was produced as part of 'Compassion in Action,' a virtual celebration of the many everyday heroes in Ko‘olaupoko who are working tirelessly to strengthen a culture of caring in our communities. Big mahalo to @compassionatekoolaupoko and everyone who worked to make this event and video happen.
Our celebration of Paul and Mikey completing their 2-year Ahupua’a Apprenticeship and Cohort 1 completing their first year continued with a time to kuʻi as a crew. Nothing goes better with laulau than freshly pounded poi with kalo straight from our ʻāina. 😋🌱 For some this was their first experience pounding poi.
The biggest lesson for the day was to learn this one way of doing something (kuʻi and making laulau) and then to take it back to their friends and family to continue to share knowledge. #normalize

This past week we had the privilege of celebrating Paul and Mikey. Two summers ago they took a chance on us and joined our ASA Pilot Cohort. Now we get to celebrate all their accomplishments in school, as part of our amazing crew, and most importantly as the phenomenal young men they have grown into right before our eyes.
One of the highlights of growing food is preparing and eating together. We haven’t had the opportunity to make laulau as a crew yet, so it was a busy morning with everyone jumping in where they were needed to make sure we could eat on time! 50 laulau in the tiny pressure-cooker...CAN! 🙌🏽🤞🏽💪🏽

Ahupuaʻa Systems Apprenticeship
2020 was a challenging year for everyone. We were grateful to host the first official cohort of our ASA program and have 2 of our pilot program participants continue into their second year. For many, being able to safely continue to work in the lo'i and see their peers face-to-face was a lifesaver during the lockdown.
The Ahupuaʻa Systems Apprenticeship is a two-year program in partnership with Windward Community College designed to educate and cultivate the next generation of people committed to living the once sustainable island food system's values and practices.
We are currently recruiting for Cohort 2, Summer 2021 through Spring 2023. If you or someone you know is a recent or soon-to-be graduate ages 17-24, be sure to check out our program details. The application deadline is Friday, April 23, 2021.

2nd Graders from Malama Honua PCS
Mahalo to Kumu Jess and Kumu Pule’s 2nd graders from Malama Honua Public Charter Schoolfor coming to Ho’okua’āina for your first huaka’i of the year! This year, the students have been learning about food miles and how far their food travels from farm to their table. What better way to learn about food miles than to drive just a few to a farm in their community. We appreciate how much these Kumu and haumāna value making connections to food, people, and place. We hope to make these powerful connections with more students in our community, one visit at a time to Kapalai. 🌱
