Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy Birthday!! 🎄🎆🎂

We have been busy busy celebrating the holidays with family, working horses, working on our house, Katie’s birthday, a new calf… 🤪Facebook took a backseat for the last few weeks, we’re still here and doing great!!

Who wants to get a c**t started at a discount rate?!

Our current intern has been doing a great job riding green c**ts and is ready for her next step! She’s ready to start a c**t on her own under our guidance.

This is an opportunity to get a horse started in our program at 2/3 the cost! Essentially you can get 3 months for the price of two! The cost to the owner would be $1,000 a month flat fee that includes the board and feed.

Not only does the owner get a discount fee but it allows out intern to make money as well. We are setting this up to help her earn more than she already does.

Our hope would be a horse that stays at least 60 days with a preference of 90 days. And for the horse to be a 2, 3 or 4 year old and unstarted. A mustang would not be ideal for this situation. Mainly because if they’re unhandled it’s too big of a task and if they are already handled a lot then it’s unrealistic to what a c**t starter generally gets as a client horse.

What Do You Want?!

Sometimes in the heat of the battle (better known as the middle of a session), we find our horse and ourselves frustrated. While the number of reasons for this can be quite extensive, I want to talk about one reason in particular.

What can happen in a session as we don’t see eye to eye with our horse, is we start spiraling off in different directions. Say we set out to teach our horse to ground tie but then while correcting movement he feels heavy on the halter, so we try to fix that. Then his shoulder pushes into us so we try to soften that. Then he won’t lead up so we start working on that. We’re now a long ways from our initial lesson and nothing is any good.

Pretty soon we’re both frustrated and just arguing. Bickering like an old ill-paired married couple. This is a good time to ask yourself, “what the hell am I even after?!”

With horses, one of the largest stressors is confusion. Bringing clarity and probably with it a singular short term goal, helps in their understanding and relaxation.

So this week, when working your horse, if you start to feel frustrated just stop for a minute. Stand there and ask yourself, “what am I trying to get to happen?” And then restart your lesson with that in mind. If you try to get too many things at once, you’ll probably get none of them.

It’s starting to get cold here in Texas! Here’s a tip from Triple Crown Feed!

Reduce the risk of colic this fall and winter! Keep your horses drinking. You can encourage drinking by feeding your horse salt daily. Be sure water is always available and that your water sources are ready for colder temperatures and heated when temperatures reach freezing!
