The Mayfield Vet team wouldn't be complete without our Veterinary Assistants. They offer support to the Veterinarians, Technicians, and staff to ensure the patient's visits follow clinic requirements for outstanding care. Their job is to be the extra pair of hands to hold an unruly and scared pup, to clean the patients and the facilities of unexpected mess, and offer extra help in surgery where every minute counts. In short, they are essential to a busy practice like ours, and we are so thankful for their dedication. This week we are going to share extra details about those who answer the call for Veterinary Assistants.

Meet Lanie - our newest Vet Assistant who recently hired in on September 30. In the short time she's been on our team, she writes that she enjoys “being able to serve the community” doing what she loves - helping people and their pets.

At home, she cares for a Dalmatian named “Barkley”, two cats named “Cheero” and “Luna” and a Bearded Dragon named “Flick.” Lanie enjoys gaming, reading books and fishing in her free time.

THANK YOU, Lanie, for your hard work and for being a part of our team.

The spotlight shines brightly on Nick today! He's been a part of Mayfield Vet since February of 2023. His love of pets follows him home every day, where he cares for one very special dog, Baxter.

When asked about his favorite part of being a Vet Assistant, he answered firmly, “I love that no day is ever the same; and I love being a part of the MVC team.”

After work, Nick stays busy hanging out with friends, going to the gym and being outdoors.

THANK YOU, Nick, for your hard work and for being a part of our team.

Are you seeing the slither of snakes in your mind today - It's Reptile Awareness Day! Reptiles include snakes, turtles, lizards, and crocodiles. They are fascinating creatures that play vital roles in ecosystems around the globe. Reptiles are important because they control pests, disperse seeds, and support the health of ecosystems. However, reptiles face many threats, including habitat loss and the illegal pet trade which has led to the creation of this special day.

We'd like to shine a light on Carey Beth! She's been a part of our team since June of 2018. Having been with the clinic for 6 years, she's a pro at handling the chaos of hectic Mondays. Carey Beth loves to watch the recovery process of patients from beginning to end. When it comes to her favorite part of working at Mayfield Vet, she truly enjoys educating clients taking home their pets after surgeries or procedures. It's her passion to be the voice for the voiceless.

Carey Beth's care of pets doesn't stop when she leaves the clinic. She cares for 3 dogs (Tye, Drako and Sopie) and one cat (Kitty) at home. You'll find her with family and friends in her free time often enjoying the outdoors. She loves to spend as much time as possible with her pets.

We'd like to shine a light on Ginger! She's been a part of our team for many years learning the details of vet care. In fact, she can't recall a time when she didn't work at Mayfield Vet. Ginger enjoys the wide variety of cases in the clinic every day. She loves spending days working alongside fellow vet employees.

When she's not at work, she is still caring for many animals...at home. She has 14 cats: Tiny, Splootie, Nibbler, Georgie, Legs, Miss Puss, Carl, Tina, Feebas, Softie, Bernice, JessePinkman, Little Grey and Derp. Just as important are her 5 dogs: Dilbert, David S. Pumpkins, Dr Zoidberg, Ricky and Patsy. They all need her attention every day – Ginger stays busy! She loves to fish; but she loves many outdoor activities too. On rainy days, you will likely catch her playing video games, or curled up with a good book.

THANK YOU, Ginger, for your hard work and for being a part of our team.

First, I want to start by saying thank you to everyone who donated. Each and every donation was very much appreciated. This was a very personal cause for me. Boone and the outskirts is my second home. To see the destruction and suffering was heartbreaking. I wanted to do something to help and to make a difference but I’m one person. That’s when I went to my employers and asked for help. I cannot thank them enough for their support.

The U-Haul was loaded on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 11 and we (my husband and myself) left for North Carolina. Friday night we stopped in Cookeville, TN to wait and cross into the mountains in the daylight. Once we turned onto Prison Camp Rd in Mountain City, TN driving became very tedious, and the destruction became evident. The edges of the road were washed away and what wasn’t was crumbling off. Houses that had bridges to the driveways no longer had bridges. Mudslides were evident along with all the fallen trees. Part of the road was one lane in spots where the other side was washed away. We would come up on cones sporadically blocking spots where the road was caved in. Water was still running out of the mountains and across the roads in several places. Bridges were covered in debris (if they had not been cleaned) or had an unimaginable amount of debris pushed up against them. One amazing sight was a Christmas tree farm that was completely untouched. From the top of the mountain all the way down the side, from big to little, they all stood beautifully.

We arrived in Blowing Rock, Saturday afternoon, to deliver the donations to Project Hope. They are run locally by a woman who also owns a gift shop in Blowing Rock. This is why I chose to donate through them, knowing our donations would stay local in Western North Carolina. They were so excited over the amount and variation of donations but mostly so grateful. The guys assisted my husband in unloading the U-Haul. In doing so, we all were talking and came to find out they were in Mayfield after the EF4 tornado. What a way to truly PAY IT FORWARD!

The people that live in these mountains are resilient, kind and strong. Yes, they need as much help as they can get and are in situation that I, myself, could not imagine. Loss of family members that still have not been found. Everything from houses and vehicles, their entire lives being completely washed away to minimal damage, but they have banned together to help each other clean up and start repairing to open roads and businesses. Towns are opening back up for business and begging for people to return to the area for their vacations. You will still see houses toppled over and leftover mudslides. You will also see how these communities are beautiful – and even through the massive destruction - you'll receive a warm welcome. If you ever get the chance to visit Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Sugar Mountain, Beech Mountain, Grandfather Mountain, Bryson City or any of the smaller communities around please take the opportunity to do so. These towns are unique and beautiful. The people are wonderful. Again, thank you all for your donations. ~ Karen Vaughn

This past week passed quickly as we celebrated National Veterinary Technician Week and fun times were had by all. Please follow along next week where we'll keep posting the profiles of our hard working vet techs.

This week across the veterinary world is known as National Veterinary Technician week. Our licensed technicians assess every patient who comes into Mayfield Vet for care, whether for general office visits, scheduled procedures or in emergency. These staff members draw blood, collect samples and perform laboratory tests: sterilizing equipment in preparation for surgeries in which they assist. When instructed, they administer medications, IV fluids and anesthesia. The licensed techs chart collected information for animals' medical histories. When necessary, they must restrain animals being evaluated. They often trim nails, remove sutures, cleaning wounds and changing dressings as necessary. Mayfield Vet depends on technicians to communicate clearly with pet owners often lending sage advice for dealing with a stubborn pup or any number of pet-related problems. It is the experience from working in a veterinary clinic like ours that develops well-educated technicians. In short, their days are very full and no two are ever the same.

We'd like to send out appreciation and a very heart-felt THANK YOU to these team members whose dedicated service make every day operations possible. Our vet techs SHOW UP and SHOW OUT everyday and we couldn't be more proud. Each day, we'll share details about our vet technicians individually.

Meet Lexie! Her experience as a LVT started in 2008, but she's been working hard for Mayfield Vet since 2015. You'll often find her skillfully cleaning a pet's teeth as dentistry as well as feline medicine are her favorites. When she's not a the clinic, she's spending time with her husband and kids (Gentry and Halle) and her 13 year old Domestic Long Haired cat, Tortie.

THANK YOU, Lexie, for your hard work and for being a part of our team.
