Welcome Ripley everyone! He is a full blooded Dachshund, approx 2/3 YO M, currently awaiting neuter.

Mr Ripley got hit by a car, fractured his pelvic floor, injured his hip, his tail, skidded sideways for some time and had a belly full of road rash to show for it.

Ripley is incredibly lucky and will not need intensive surgery! However his initial vet fees/scans/xrays were just shy of $800. So if you can give, we would sincerely appreciate the kind gesture during this holiday season!

Please welcome Rusty! He is a senior hound mix who was found in Trenton on the side of the road. He is emaciated, heartworm positive, anemic from malnutrition, and riddled with parasites. Poor fella was lucky to rescued by a Good Samaritan.

Unfortunately, we see this A LOT with hounds in our area. Hounds just turned loose because theyā€™re too old to do their job. Or people just stop caring about them altogether and they escape to find food and shelter.

Every hound we have taken in comes to us in this near death state. These dogs suffer. Truly suffer, as they succumb to starvation and the elements. Weā€™ve known experienced, legitimate hunters who take exceptional care of their dogs, but weā€™ve also seen ā€œhuntersā€ who have clue what theyā€™re doing, probably donā€™t actually hunt, and just keep dogs to foster some phony persona. WE SEE YOU šŸ˜‘.

Aubrey has finally received her surgery and walked out like a trooper. Her break was old, so it basically had to be scraped, before adding two plates, scar tissue around knee removed so her meniscus is sitting on cartilage, and a graft to introduce fresh bone into the area. This would not have been possible without the support of about 10 people who donated to her cause. We canā€™t thank you enough.

Our Story

The founder of Castaways Rescue is an active duty veteran who began fostering dogs with her husband (co-founder) while stationed overseas in Okinawa, Japan circa 2014. It was there that the founders were inspired by the relentless efforts of rescue workers who sought to save as many dogs from euthanasia as possible. We are proud to say that we have maintained a relationship with one such worker, and she currently serves as a board member.

In 2017, the desire to form our own rescue struck us deeply, as we returned from overseas, and continued to see the horrific euthanasia rates not only in Onslow County, where the rescue was founded, but in North Carolina as a whole. Furthermore, we observed that most local area rescues and shelters were at capacity and having to turn dogs away or resort to euthanasia. It was evident that more rescues were needed. In 2019, the founders decided there would never be a ā€˜perfect timeā€™ to embark upon the journey of creating a non-profit dog rescue and filed their Articles of Incorporation with the state of North Carolina. In June 2020, Castaways Rescue, Inc became an official 501c3.

The name Castaways was selected because we believe every being has inherent value and worth, and therefore, should not simply be ā€œcastedā€ aside. In a world rife with the mentality that failure constitutes defeat, we see failure as an opportunity for growth and second chances.
