Miss Lizzie is doing so well. Her tail and butt hair are growing back in! 😆 We believe she is a mini-Aussie mix, approximately 2 YO; she is so sweet and loving and walks well on a leash. She would love to find her fur-ever home soon!

Sweet, sweet Bubba the 1st, crossed the rainbow bridge due to cancer. He was a tripod and a senior dog, and I remember thinking a few years ago-
no one is going want him 😔 what am I going to do…

But someone did want him Victoria Berger Williams. And he lived a wonderful life with Victoria and her husband, next to the water with complete run of the house and yard! They gave him a fighting chance and loved him back to life. Thank you so much for being his forever family.
Rest easy Bubba.

Aubrey has finally received her surgery and walked out like a trooper. Her break was old, so it basically had to be scraped, before adding two plates, scar tissue around knee removed so her meniscus is sitting on cartilage, and a graft to introduce fresh bone into the area.

This would not have been possible without the support of about 10 people who donated to her cause. We can’t thank you enough.

So Lizzie’s teeth are ground down to the nerve endings. This is indicative of being locked inside a metal cage and constantly trying to chew her way out.

But she is safe now and doesn’t have to worry about being locked up and starved. Seriously, it takes INTENTIONAL effort to let a dog get this way. Which is disgusting to think about.

The top row is the same, so it’s wetfood for this sweet baby.

Please welcome Lizzie to the Castaways Crew!!

I received a phone call about a stray with some pretty messed up skin and that she had been roaming the Jones County side of White Oak. I then enlisted some help from a friend to set up and bait a camera but we got nothing except opossums and raccoons showing up!

Well, a Good Samaritan calls me yesterday saying she had a sighting. So I hopped in the car and went looking, and we finally found her! She’s as sweet as she can be, but if you zoom in on these pictures you can clearly see her skin conditions.
At the vet with her now to see what’s going on. Will continue to keep you up to date!

Aubrey is still awaiting surgery. She goes in this Sunday! We’ve had to keep pain patches on her leg to reduce her discomfort. 😟 But she remains in a positive mood for being so play restricted. Please wish her well, donate if you can, or share!

Stack is so handsome! I love him to pieces! He has been with us for over 6 months without a single inquiry or application ☹️. He is a GSD/Pittie mix.

He is a very loyal dog and would make an excellent companion. He loves him some butt scratches and ear nuggies 💙 Visit our website to learn more about him!

I’ve shared this a lot through the years. I will keep sharing. Because we still have problems with people who want “insta-dogs” EVEN THOUGH they are knowingly adopting from a RESCUE. These dogs have been through so much in their short time here. Give them a chance. The more patience and love you show them, you will receive tenfold in return.

Our Story

The founder of Castaways Rescue is an active duty veteran who began fostering dogs with her husband (co-founder) while stationed overseas in Okinawa, Japan circa 2014. It was there that the founders were inspired by the relentless efforts of rescue workers who sought to save as many dogs from euthanasia as possible. We are proud to say that we have maintained a relationship with one such worker, and she currently serves as a board member.

In 2017, the desire to form our own rescue struck us deeply, as we returned from overseas, and continued to see the horrific euthanasia rates not only in Onslow County, where the rescue was founded, but in North Carolina as a whole. Furthermore, we observed that most local area rescues and shelters were at capacity and having to turn dogs away or resort to euthanasia. It was evident that more rescues were needed. In 2019, the founders decided there would never be a ‘perfect time’ to embark upon the journey of creating a non-profit dog rescue and filed their Articles of Incorporation with the state of North Carolina. In June 2020, Castaways Rescue, Inc became an official 501c3.

The name Castaways was selected because we believe every being has inherent value and worth, and therefore, should not simply be “casted” aside. In a world rife with the mentality that failure constitutes defeat, we see failure as an opportunity for growth and second chances.
