My previous post was about the Moms and Mutts “rescue”. But let’s look at their adoption prices and the fact that in 7 years 14,000 puppies have been sold. This is what retail rescue has turned into. You aren’t really rescuing these puppies. They are being mass produced. Because of their careless behavior multiple adults and children were told to seek medical attention and be treated for rabies and 2 tested positive. Not only that, but now these families with children have to tell them the puppy has to go away. Please if you do not want to support responsible breeders like myself please find better rescues to support.

I cannot begin to tell you how upset I am at Moms and Mutts Colorado Rescue. They KNEW there was a possibility of exposure and they still came across multiple state lines with infected puppies.

** ADOPTER BEWARE - RABIES **

As more information comes to light about the puppy rabies case reported last week, it begs the question of whether the rescue, Moms and Mutts Colorado Rescue, that offered the affected puppies for adoption should have known that the pups had been exposed to rabies before they were even put on the van transporting them from Texas to Colorado.

Apparently, the puppies were exposed in early July to a dead skunk that was confirmed to have rabies. Nine days later, the puppies were loaded up on a van with what were probably dozens of other puppies and dogs and transported to Colorado. Four days later the puppies were offered for adoption at an event held by the rescue. Within less than two weeks, one of the puppies began exhibiting symptoms of rabies, which was later confirmed after it was euthanized. With this confirmation, the rescue was instructed to have the rest of the litter euthanized as a precaution.

While the rescue doesn't appear to be particularly apologetic in its public commentary, it is 100% the responsibility of any rescue to ensure the puppies they are offering for adoption are healthy. They have a long-standing relationship with the Texas rescue from which they obtained the puppies, and we think it should be standard operating procedure to have conversations about health before accepting any animals.

To add insult to injury, the rescue that exposed countless animals and people to rabies is now urgently soliciting donations saying they cannot pay their rent or other expenses without money from the public. They say they are teetering on the brink of going under, which we hear repeatedly from them. Are they leveraging a terrible situation to garner donations? Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps they should go under.

💥 New information is being revealed daily and until we can verify it, we are not updating this post. Specifically, there is discussion that there was no rabid skunk exposure in Texas, which is what the rescue claimed was the source of rabies. Records have been requested from the Texas Health Department to confirm if there was a case of rabies in any species reported in the involved counties in June or July. Stay tuned for an update. 💥

Once upon a time I believed in GoodDog and I was listed. I will never use them again.
They are no different than a broker 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ people get very greedy 😡😡😡

They allow doodles and rate them higher than a preservation breeder that does all of their breed specific health clearances.

Do not support Good Dog or its breeders.

I don’t care what religion you are or what color your skin is. Please remind your children or child to be compassionate. Not everyone can share their story. Not everyone had breakfast or even knows when they will eat again. Be kind. If you see bullying please tell a teacher.

School is almost starting and I want to ask you a favor… Sit with your child for 5 minutes and explain that there’s never a reason to make fun of someone for their height, their weight, their skin tone, their home life or the things they enjoy.

Explain there’s nothing wrong with wearing the same shoes every day.
Explain to them that a used backpack carries the same dreams as a new one.
Teach them not to exclude anyone for "being different"
Explain to them that teasing hurts and that school is for going to LEARN, NOT to compete or spread negativity.

Remind them some kids don’t go home to loving families so it’s important to be kind. It all starts at home!

This is why I microchip every Jasara Puppy. Please when you are home do not have collars on your dog or puppy. When you travel that is fine. If you are going for a walk great. But hanging tags and collars during playtime can cause a big issue.

This is also a reminder to have your number on your collar while traveling. Not on a hanging tag, but on the buckle or a brass plate. Because people don’t always check for microchips.

Sweet 14-week-old Golden Retriever puppy Percy is on the road to recovery after spending some time in our ICU over the weekend! He was an excellent patient and feels better already thanks to some time in our state-of-the-art oxygen kennel. In this photo he had popped his little head out to say hello to our staff during one of his treatments, and we don’t think he could get any cuter!

How Percy ended up spending the weekend with us is an important story that his caring owners allowed us to share to help keep other pets safe. Percy and his big brother were rough-housing, when Percy’s collar got stuck on his brother’s mouth. Percy panicked when he was suddenly stuck, and while twisting around trying to escape he caused his collar to become even tighter around his neck! Thankfully their owner noticed quickly that something was wrong and freed Percy before he lost consciousness. When his owners rushed him to see our ER team, Percy was struggling to breathe, drooling profusely, and very distressed. Radiographs showed that Percy had fluid in his lungs (non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema) caused by the time he spent struggling to breathe. Pain medications and oxygen support quickly helped Percy breathe more comfortably as his body worked to heal from the experience.

The strangulation hazard of dogs playing while wearing collars is a hidden danger that many pet owners don’t know about, but a story we hear with some frequency in the ER. Thankfully Percy’s story has a happy ending, but if his owners hadn’t been there to intervene it could have been tragic. Please, get your pups microchipped so they have a permanent form of identification, and then take those collars off when they’re playing with or interacting with other dogs!

These x-rays were just posted of a Bernese Mountain Dog who has come into rescue from a doodle breeding program.

This is for education and for anyone not familiar with x-rays, this is extreme hip dysplasia and subluxation. There should be sockets holding her legs in place.

This is the mother of bernedoodle puppies. Do you think her "breeder" cared until she was in too much pain to keep breeding, at which time she was dumped? This is a hereditary condition. THIS is why it's important to support ethical breeders.

Because breeders like myself do x-rays. We do echocardiograms by a veterinary cardiologist and have our dog’s eyes checked every year by a veterinary ophthalmologist. We also do genetic testing.

Golden Retriever standard testing Guidelines:

Golden Retrievers must have Hips, Eyes, Heart, and Elbows done. All breeders and the GRCA (Golden Retriever Club of America) require these tests at a minimum.

Hip and Elbow x-rays need to be submitted to OFA.
Now, DO NOT just go to your local vet for these. Ask around for veterinarians that are good at taking OFA x-rays, not all vets do quality x-rays when it comes to hips and elbows. A bad film can wash a good dog out of your program. Breeders spend good money for exceptional positioning for these films. This is going to run you $280-$1000. This is also dependent on your area of the country and vet’s expertise. Final OFA accepted x-rays are done at 24 months old. You do not need to ever repeat hip and elbow x-rays if you do them at 24 months aka 2 years old.
Borderline results are not a passing grade.

Heart: a veterinary cardiologist for an Auscultation ($50-100) at minimum. The best/gold standard is getting an Echocardiogram(Echo)/Auscultation ($280-$1000) done. I currently do /auscultation/echos on all my dogs prior to breeding. An auscultation is where they use a stethoscope to listen to the dog’s heart. An echocardiogram is where they will use an ultrasound to measure parts of the heart and blood flow within the heart. This exam is done after 1 year of age and before 2 years of age.

Eyes: A veterinary ophthalmologist will need to do a yearly eye exam for the life of the dog. ($45-$90 per year)

You can also search on OFA’s site for clinics being offered, which have discounted rates. Most clinics are done at shows.

Next you will need to test for Genetic diseases.

https://my.vgl.ucdavis.edu/myvgl/login.htm

You will select the golden retriever panel. Make sure you pay to have it automatically sent to OFA. You just have to check the boxes. The tests needed are NCL, prcd-PRA, GR-PRA1, GR-PRA2, and Ichthyosis 1 & 2. You can also do DM, SAN, and CSM, but those are not the main ones needed to send to OFA. The base cost is $130. If you click the boxes to have the results sent to OFA as well it comes out around $220.

UC Davis is a Gold Standard Laboratory and cheaper, but you can also use Embark or PawPrint.
https://embarkvet.com/breeders/?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=brd_acq_embark_brand_20210520&utm_term=embark%20breeder%20kit&utm_content=all_us-ca&gclid=CjwKCAiA3L6PBhBvEiwAINlJ9C57scgkC8JmJ3y9yNbI4Q952-0zTgS20JMq21gtZk90K74D1nR6uBoCRbgQAvD_BwE

https://www.pawprintgenetics.com

You also need to run a brucellosis test every breeding to make sure your dog (male or female) does not have it as it is an STI (s*xually transmitted disease and is devastating to dogs, cats, and cattle) ($80+ depending on area)

Not one thing about breeding with proper health testing is cheap. Yes, every dog male or female bred needs to have these screenings. No one wants to produce sick puppies. In 2019 NCL was discovered in Golden Retrievers mainly field/hunting lines and it killed multiple dogs. Several littermates died. NCL is a death sentence for a dog. All puppies born affected with it will die before 2 years of age. I don’t say this to scare you, but it rocked the golden retriever community. We donated money and blood samples to the University of Missouri (aka OFA’s study Laboratory) to help develop a test. Last year Ichthyosis 2 was found. Puppies are born with scales (large patches of black flaking skin) on their bellies and can get major skin infections. If you don’t test you don’t know. If you test and everything is clear it opens up a lot more doors for you too. It’s also the ethical thing to do.

You should also add your dog to: www.K9data.com

LET’S TALK TOOLS

Red Arrow: Harness that fits around the dog’s body and when connected to a clip leash, creates a pulling reaction from the dog. This pulling reaction triggers the shoulders and chest muscles to be used which then influences the dog to use strength to get where they need to. If you have properly trained your dog to walk right next to you on a harness, you will not experience the pulling. Congratulations, I have yet to see this. 😂

Orange Arrow: Flat collar, usually used to connect a clip leash to and often times sits on the bottom of the neck due to gravity and the dog’s head being higher than the shoulders. This then triggers the dog’s shoulder muscles and the pulling starts. Again, this teaches the dog that strength needs to be used to get where they need to. If you have properly trained your dog to walk next to you on a flat collar, you will not experience the pulling. The majority of dogs I see are pulling during this setup.

Blue Arrow: Slip Leash is very high on the neck where it is placed behind the ears, behind the jaw bone, and it allows us to influence the dog’s head and brain. Shoulders and chest muscles are not triggered and physical strength is not used during the walk. When used correctly, little to no pressure is on the leash and physical strength is used by the dog to get from point A to point B. If you have properly trained your dog to walk next to you on a slip leash, you will not experience any pulling.

Out of the 3 tools shown, the slip leash is one of the most productive tools to create a structured walk, a calm mind, and a solid relationship.

Ever watch anyone walk a horse by the saddle?

Yeah, me either.

That’s because when you walk a 1000lb animal, you need to influence the brain and not the body.

Let’s start influencing our dog’s mentally and not physically.

Unless you buy the first dog you see at a shelter you are shopping. You pay the shelter for the dog or cat. The dog, cat, hamster, etc you bring into your home is your new responsibility. Therefore you have to be happy with the new pet you’ve chosen.

Over 90% if not 95% of puppies purchased from reputable breeders are sold under a contract asking for the puppy or dog back if you cannot care for it anymore. We do not want our puppies to end up in shelters. We want better for the little lives we bring into this world. Why would you not want to support ethical responsible breeders? They breed to better the breed and have generations of proven lines and temperaments. Almost all reputable breeders also support rescues. Just because we breed doesn’t mean we don’t want all dogs to have wonderful homes.

Getting a pet should NEVER be rushed.

Get to know the breeder, ask about the dogs, their clearances, etc.

Make the right decision for you or you and your family.

For hopefully the next 10-15 years you will be this pet’s whole world.

Please share! It’s hot 🥵 leave your pets at home!!

It was 103 degrees yesterday. The windows are tinted on that vehicle as well. So tinted or not that doesn’t help.

Your pet cannot stay in your car in this kind of heat.

After 20 minutes it was 137 degrees inside the car.

All of this!!! Please read do not just look at the caption.

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

Please do not walk your dogs on concrete or asphalt when it’s hot.

UC Davis updated the spay/neuter guidance adding more breeds and consensus on age best to consider spay/neuter to reduce cancer and orthopedic risk. This is a retrospective study. I’m just now reading full update/article published April 2024- link below

Golden Retrievers:
Male: May neuter after 12 months old
Female: Never spay- intact for life preferred.

https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fvets.2024.1322276

2.2lbs =1kg so dogs in question are 44lbs and bigger: this also includes mixed breeds because all doodles are a mixed breed.

The following is an excerpt from the research:

For more breed, s*x, and age-of-neutering information, patient records of Golden Retrievers were examined for risks of joint disorder, such as hip dysplasia (HD), elbow dysplasia (ED), or cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tear, or cancer, such as lymphosarcoma (LSA), mast cell tumor (MCT), hemangiosarcoma (HSA), or osteosarcoma (OSA) (11). Age of neutering had major specific effects on risks for male and female dogs for the above mentioned three joint disorders and four cancers. Subsequently, 35 breeds (12) and 3 weight classes (13) of mixed breeds were examined for the roles of age of neutering on these health risks. Regarding joint disorders, some heavier dog breeds (over 20 kg) were at higher risk than lighter weight dogs. This pattern was also found with mixed-breed dogs, where those over 20 kg were more likely to have a significantly higher risk of joint disorders when neutered than intact. Other genetic diseases were found to have increased expression with neutering, especially when performed early and for female breeds (14). A further problem with neutering is that it results in lifelong extremely high secretion of the luteinizing hormone, having effects on receptors throughout the body, perhaps altering aggressive and fearful behaviors and various other disorders (15).
