Did you know that nearly 1 in 5 pets are affected by loud noises, including the sound of
fireworks？
According to the Humane Society of the United States, more pets go missing during the July 4th holiday than any other time of the year. Animal Control services across the nation have reported seeing a 30% increase in escaped/lost pets, causing many dog owners and shelters to become increasingly overwhelmed between July 4th and July 6th.
We urge everyone to take precautions with their babies to prevent them from becoming lost or injuring themselves.

Last Sunday we ventured to the Georgia Renaissance Festival as not only a fun day for my friends, Dixie, & Rebel, and myself; but as a training opportunity for Sero. I prepared myself to have to leave early, thinking Sero would get overwhelmed by it all but I was very pleasantly surprised that he handled everything beautifully and we were able to stay all day. He maintained a very tight heel of his own accord. He greeted people who asked about him (I had him labeled as “In Training” and “Do Not Pet” on his vest) and was able to walk through the crowd ignoring people. He coexisted with the other dogs we encountered happily, never making a big fuss to interact with them. He worked on being able to settle in such a crazy environment and did that beautifully as well. Sitting for lunch or a show or just waiting in the shade while friends perused some shops. He even took a nap while we watched the joust. I am over the moon with this guy’s progress. He even tolerated dragon wings and horns on him throughout the day.

Little Zephyr isn’t so little anymore! This handsome boy has been kicking butt and taking names when it comes to his training! I’m so happy seeing how he’s coming along! I’m excited to see how he does with the new things he’s learning!

I took foster boy, Sero, to Tractor Supply for some socialization. I took Dixie and Rebel with us so that he could see how they interact with new people. He did really well; especially after he realized that new people meant being showered with affection and treats. It makes me so happy to see him so much more confident and comfortable, enjoying life. 💜 Soon we’ll start working on being able to settle in public.

We’d like to introduce my foster boy, Sero, to everyone. The first few months of his life have been very rough, but we’re going to make sure he never experiences those things again. In the past couple of days we’ve touched on basic life skills that he’s never experienced before and today he had his very first training session.

Be proactive. Don't just throw your dog into new or unfamiliar situations and expect them to just be ok with it. Advocate for your dog. Not every dog wants to be interacted with, especially by someone outside their household. Teach your dog(s) the ability to settle and relax in hectic environments. Give them a safe space that they can retreat to or simply place them in a safe space/comfortable environment so they can decompress. Set your dog(s) up for success, not failure.

Our Officer team responded to over 10 dog bites yesterday, primarily in family bites. Unfortunately, this is normal for this time of year. Family members visit that our pets may not know well and our homes are a lot busier than usual.

Most people understand that any dog could bite when they are in pain. What many people don’t understand is that there are so many other reasons a dog might bite!

Everyone at some point will have heard ‘The bite came out of nowhere’ and unfortunately, in the majority of cases this just simply isn’t true.

Put simply, as a dog guardian it is your responsibility to learn, recognize and advocate to others what uncomfortable looks like for the dogs in your care.
