Feeding cats a raw diet has become increasingly popular among pet owners who believe it mirrors the natural diet of wild felines. Advocates suggest benefits such as improved digestion, healthier skin and coat, and increased energy levels. 

However, recent incidents have highlighted significant risks associated with raw feeding. In December 2024, a house cat in Oregon died after consuming raw turkey pet food contaminated with the H5N1 bird flu virus. Genetic analysis confirmed that the virus in the pet food matched the strain found in the cat. 

This case prompted a recall of the affected product and raised concerns about the safety of raw diets for cats. Health officials advise against feeding cats raw meat or unpasteurized dairy products, as these can harbor pathogens like the bird flu virus, posing health risks to both pets and humans. Symptoms of bird flu in cats include lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, and respiratory issues. If your cat exhibits any of these signs, seek veterinary care promptly. 

Given the current outbreak of bird flu and the associated risks, it is advisable to avoid feeding your cat raw food at this time. Opting for high-quality commercial cat food that has been properly cooked can help ensure your pet’s safety and well-being.

On Dec. 24, Northwest Naturals announced a voluntary pet food recall after an Oregon house cat died after eating a Northwest Naturals product that later tested positive for bird flu.

📣 Our Red Smoke Maine C**n Kitten Turns 7 Weeks Old Today! 🎉 He stays in the cattery .

Fun fact about this little guy: he was a singleton, born to our stunning Russian import, Fiona. Despite her size, Fiona didn’t have enough milk, so he was lovingly adopted by Esenia, our blue Maine C**n female from Russia. 🌸

This kitten has been ahead of the game right from the start! He opened his eyes just 3 days after birth (the average is 7-14 days), started walking at 3 days old, and was already exploring outside his nest by the end of the first week. He may be younger than Esenia’s babies by a week and a half, but he’s already larger than most of them! 📏✨
