Encouraging your dog to bark on command might seem counterproductive, but it can be a useful tool in training them to be quiet.

Speak up — First, find a stimulus that naturally makes your dog bark. It could be a knock on the door, a doorbell sound, or someone saying “Speak.” When your dog barks, reward them with praise and a treat.

Shut it down — Next, say “Quiet” or another cue you choose, and offer a treat when your dog stops barking. Gradually increase the amount of time between barks before you give the “Quiet” cue.

Combine the cues — Finally, practice the “Speak” and “Quiet” cues together until your dog can bark and then stop on command. This will give you more control over your dog’s barking and help them understand when it’s appropriate to bark and when they should be quiet.

You have to ask yourself, who do you want treating your pet? A veterinarian whose business has supported your community? Or a veterinarian who answers to a corporation? BTW, there are very few privately owned veterinary practices left in McKinney. (Hint, we are one of the few) Shop small, support local!

Just when you think you know what to do….

The CDC issued a brand new dog import form. (As opposed to the new form from last week)

The good news is that you can fill it yourself, so you dont necessarily have to get a vet involved.

Yay!

The bad news? They’ve got another week and a half to change their minds…

Be aware that there are high and low risk countries, so check the list for the country you are bringing your dog from…

CDC issues regulations to control the entry of dogs into the United States from other countries. The

Want to make sure your pet is getting the right amount of food? It's not always easy to know how much to give them.

The best way to determine their daily food intake is to calculate their caloric needs using a dog or cat calorie calculator.

Divide that amount into two or three meals and limit their treat consumption to no more than 10% of their daily calorie intake. And remember, measuring their food with a cup isn't always accurate.

Want help figuring out your pet's daily calorie needs? Call 972-540-2220 to talk to your veterinarian.

Please be aware that some cats may not be able to metabolize eprinomectin - a popular form of heartworm prevention. This can lead to toxic effects.

Please call us for safe alternatives for flea/tick, and heartworm preventative recommendations in your cat.

A WSU study identified a risk of severe adverse effects in cats with the genetic mutation to eprinomectin, an active ingredient in top-selling parasite preventatives like NexGardCombo and Centragard.

What do we do every Friday from 12pm-2pm when we close?? 🤔

Do we go to Ernesto’s? (Why yes, we do on special occasions 🌮) But mostly we talk as a team. We talk about how to make ACCSR a better veterinary clinic experience for you and your pets! 🐾❤️🐾. And then we learn how to help them… 📝💉🩺

Today’s lesson was about CPR! Ace helped us learn how to find a pulse and respiratory rate! He thought he was just getting extra pets and treats!

Dr Barden then taught us how to do chest compressions. We practiced with a stuffed dog “Fluffy”. (🎶Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah 🎶 Stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive…… IYKYK)

Every team member at ACCSR has a passion for helping pets…. Team building and education is something we value at ACCSR.

Pet owners, keep your furry friends safe from w**d killer exposure!

While most w**d killers are relatively safe, ingestion of an extreme quantity of certain products can cause myotonia, vomiting, and weakness in dogs. Roundup® is not particularly dangerous, but undiluted product should be kept away from pets. If your pet is presenting any symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately
👀 Use w**d killers responsibly to keep your pets happy and healthy!

Here you can see Kimber loving her cool goggles during red laser therapy and receiving lots of love during an acupuncture session.

At Animal Care Center we know there’s no one size fits all plan, and we combine different areas of medicine to create personalized treatments for each pet. Curious about all the options available to your furry friend? Give us a call and schedule a visit today!🐾

Are you overfeeding your pet? It's easy to do when you're using an eyeball measurement or just filling up their bowl.

To ensure your furry friend is getting the right amount of food, ask us to calculate their daily caloric needs. We will assist you into figuring out how much should be in each meal.

Treats should take up no more than 10% of their daily intake.

Want to make sure you are feeding the right amount? Call 972-540-220 to talk to us!

There are new CDC requirements for dogs entering or re-entering the US starting August 1st 2024!!!

If you are bringing a dog into the US or travel outside the US and reenter please note the following rules:

1) No dog will be admitted under 6 months of age.
2) Your dog will require an ISO microchip to be in place prior to or the same day of a rabies vaccination
3) There will be a 28 day waiting period for expired or first rabies vaccinations given
4) you will be required to have a form called Certification of US Issued Rabies Vaccination issued by an USDA accredited veterinarian or in a clinic with a USDA accredited veterinarian to enter or renter the US

Basically, if you are not leaving the US with your dog, carry on....

If you travel to and from the US with your dog, please call us and we will, hopefully, be able to answer your questions and get your dog the appropriate vaccinations, microchips and paperwork. (per usual, government regulations are clear as mud, so it's complicated)

If you are reentering or entering the US with a dog anytime after August 1st 2024, it would be best to call us and make sure your dogs vaccinations and microchip information is valid before you leave the country.

Travel Safe....

As temperatures begin to rise in Texas, here are some tips to keep your furry friends safe and healthy!

Avoid walking on asphalt and concrete as pavement temperatures can reach over 150F. A good rule of thumb is that if you cannot place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, then it is too hot for your pet. Instead, walk on grass or use booties to protect tender paws from painful burns. If possible, it is better for you and your pet to walk in the morning or evening when it is cooler.

Never leave a pet unattended in a car, even for a short time. It can take only 10 minutes for your car to reach over 100F and heatstroke can set in within 15 minutes. Even with cracked windows, your pet is still at risk. When in doubt, leave them at home.

While all animals are at risk and can be victims of heatstroke, pets that are old, overweight, or short-faced are especially at risk. Try to limit outdoor time to cooler hours and/or short sessions. If you have outdoor pets, make sure to provide plenty of shade and fans (if possible). If you have working animals, it is important to keep sessions short with plenty of rest and breaks. Pets need clean, fresh water at all times but may need extra on hot days.
