The Myth about Mites….
We often hear clients call to say their pet has “ear mites”. They’ve gone to the pet store and bought an ear mite product but they still have mites.
First, “ear mites” are a diagnosis. Itchy ears are a symptom. Yes, we do see ear mites. But they are mainly in puppies and kittens from disreputable breeders, stray animals, or shelter animals (and not very many from shelters, as most shelters have veterinarians on staff that can quickly diagnose and treat this problem)
If your pet has itchy ears, you’ve had your pet for a while, and they are not exposed to many other animals; your pet probably does not have ear mites.
The number one cause of itchy ears is allergies. For dogs, it can be food or pollen. For cats, it’s typically food allergies. Allergies cause inflammation and secondary infections, that if treated inappropriately can lead to bacterial resistance.
So, next time your pet has itchy ears, don’t diagnose them. That’s literally our job to diagnose and properly treat. Come visit us. Don’t waste your money (BTW there are much better products to treat ear mites than what you can find at the pet store) and time with a misdiagnosis. Let us help you and your pet…
Happy Friday! We had a surprise visitor yesterday, Blair from rescue row!! If you recall she came to us after an accident left her paralyzed, this is her about a year after seeing us for acupuncture! We couldn’t be more thrilled with how she is doing! ☺️💗🐶
