With the Juvenile horses about to enter their 2nd major event this week at OKC, I wanted to show a comparison from the 2023 Barrel Futurities of America Juvenile Go 1 to the 2024 BFA Juvenile Go 1.

With more intentional breeding decisions, horses are becoming faster and more competitive every year.

It’s important to consider all aspects of the data available to help make those optimal crosses and we use this kind of data in our Breeding Suggestions Reports to further drill down to what the best outcome is. You can view samples on our website at myequisource.com.

We are wrapping up the analytics from the Barrel Futurities of America where the start of so many careers begins here as a Juvenile.

Horses that enter the Super Stakes AND the Juvenile make 3 physical runs, which is difficult for a young 3 year old horse, so we decided to analyze this correlation. Here are what the numbers show: ⬇️

There were 2 horses entered in the Super Stakes that did NOT run in the Juvenile at all

There were 4 horses that only ran 1 round in the Juvenile.

Horse ran on average 13% SLOWER this year compared to last year.

Earnings exclude any side pots.

When analyzing data, 📈 it’s not always obvious how the pieces fit together—especially in barrel racing, where 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 of a second can make all the difference.

At Barrel Futurities of America last week, our friends over at Split Timing Barrel Racing got this great question:

“𝙄 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙩—𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙞𝙨𝙣’𝙩 𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙨 𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨, 𝙨𝙤 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙣?”

This question came in response to an illustration showing the 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝟱 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 and 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝟱 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀. Here’s the answer:

While the winning horse didn’t dominate either list, the competitors with the fastest 1st and 3rd Straights 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿. Let’s break it down:

✅44% of competitors ran a faster 1st Straight than the winning horse.
✅42% of competitors ran a faster 3rd Straight.
✅Of those who ran faster 1st Straights, 83% placed in the 1D or 2D.
✅Of those who ran faster 3rd Straights, 87% also placed in the 1D or 2D.

This data shows that straight sections, particularly the 1st and 3rd, are 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. On larger patterns, where the straights are longer, their influence increases even more.

❓So how did the winning horse come out on top❓While it didn’t top the lists for straights or turns individually, its overall 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 across all sections created the fastest combined time.

The takeaway? Success on larger patterns like this isn’t about being the fastest in a single area—it’s about putting together a run that maximizes speed and efficiency across the board. And, as this data proves, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.

➡️If you want to know which part of the barrel pattern holds the key 🔑 to success at your next barrel race, encourage the producer to partner with Split Timing for data like only Split Timing can provide.⬅️

Buy the horse 🐎 , not the X-Rays 🩻

You’ve found an incredibly well-bred prospect, but it has some abnormalities found during your PPE have raised some concerns. So the million dollar question is: 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝘂𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆?

Seeking advice from others often yields a mix of opinions. The good news? There’s data to guide you!

In a clinical study of 2,944 prospects, 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟵𝟱% of yearlings with Grade 0 or Grade 1 abnormalities, either remained unchanged or improved.

When the Grade 3 abnormality was in a hindlimb, horses were 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 to race but had, on average, a 54-day delayed start to their racing careers.

In the horses where lameness was the reason for not racing, 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝟭𝟳.𝟴% had a clinical diagnosis involving an abnormality.

The takeaways? The odds are in your favor-only horses with the 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 severe abnormalities have a significant reduction in performance. So again I say….

Buy the horse, not the X-Rays! 😉
