Sometimes you may let your furry friend tag along as you run errands. Even though bringing her along may seem easy, disobedience could make the trip more difficult.

Instead of the dog rushing out of the car and knocking you and your groceries over, teach her to wait. Make her wait even if the car door is open and until you give the signal to exit the car.

Whether you're on a simple stroll around the neighborhood or playing catch with your pup in the front yard, your dog should know that the road is off limits.

Teach your dog the perimeter of the safe zone by saying No as your dog is about to enter the forbidden area, then follow through with an intolerable consequence. Use a leash at first so you can control your dog’s response.

Believe it or not—dogs make mistakes too—so be ready to enforce these boundaries even when your dog seems to get the picture. Accident prevention through good training is better than relying on luck.

Teach your dog to behave well by practicing a controlled walk. For this, the dog should be at your side (we like the left side), next to your knee or a step behind you. Remind them to pay attention to you by using a signal they know and a consequence they find valuable. Leash pressure can usually override anything else that might catch their eye.

Training your dog to walk well will help you avoid accidents that might involve other people or dogs.
